Recognition of your flaws is one helluva trait, Mike has pinpointed what he needs to do...I can only hope our young QB can fix his biggest flaw. http://www.thefinsiders.com/blog/2013/wallace-opens-up-about-2013-season
It would be cool if he developed more than a limited interest in attempting to catch passes that don't drop down over his shoulders in perfect stride. That'd be awesome.
Again, he needs the QB to get him the ball when he is open. RT has not, But hopefully will learn too.
I think Wallace is going to have a big season next year. The protection should be better, and the chemistry should be better. I don't have the numbers to back this up, but I'm pretty sure free agent wide receivers historically perform better after their first year with their new team. I actually have grown fond of Wallace as the season went on. For the most part he seems like he understands what needs to be done and has shown to be a team player. He doesn't moan and doesn't throw anyone under the bus. As D-pate said, if he could be more aggressive with the ball in the air, he'd be real good.
Yeah, he mentioned that. “I get open pretty deep often, but I feel like I need to come back and jump over a couple guys for sure,” said Wallace. “If I can pinpoint one thing, it’s to come back and jump over a couple guys when the ball comes short.” Wallace realizes that he has to take what the defense gives him sometimes, and not get greedy always looking for the home run ball. “I always want to make everything a touchdown instead of knowing that the ball is a little short, and that sometimes I have to attack it,” said Wallace. “Sometimes I need to know that this is not about to be a touchdown, it’s just going to be a big play for my football team. Like a first down, maybe a pass interference. I just got to stop trying to want to score so much.” Sent from my Galaxy S3 using Tapatalk
Very rarely do you have a complaint about a player and have them specifically point it out as something they need to work on. It's refreshing.
I think we saw some improvement in his physicality towards the latter part of the year. While he still had his "Mike Wallace" moments, there was some more physical play. Let's be honest: he will NEVER be mistaken for Anquan Boldin, but if he fights for a few more of these passes; like he said, a PI here, a first down there. Changes the game completely. I will tell you one thing, I have never seens a guy get so wide open in my entire life. This is a good thing. He and Tannehill must get on the same page as well. I believe Tannehill was in the bottom-third in the league in completed passes of 20 yards or more. This must change.
i think wallace is going to have a huge year next year. tannehill and him will continue to grow in chemistry and tannehill will get the timing down.
I have been hard on him for effort , he is saying the right things , hopefully he does that and we see positives . 17 and 11 do need to get the deep ball working .
If he could also work on utilizing body positioning slightly less submissive than out of some bizarre Japanese porn that'd be pretty cool too.
RT has missed some...Wallace has missed some...a little effort jumping, fighting for the ball would've made a helluva difference.
Several of us have been saying this all season. Yeah RT needs to work on his deep passes, but if wallace actually went up and fought for a ball every once in a while he would have caught ALOT more than he did. Bad passes or not. The fact that he himself is saying it says it all.
For a guy as athletic as Wallace, he appears to have the vertical leap of a 90 year old woman. The next time he gets up and attacks a ball in the air will be the first. People club Tannehill over the head for not dropping it the damn bucket everytime but say nothing about Wallace NEVER going up and making a ****ing play.
What? People have been attacking Wallace all year for his lack of aggressiveness. Both need to do a better job.
Tannehill needs to work on his deep ball, I'm the biggest Tannehill guy and I know he has to do this. He will. He will work in the offseason and get better. He has a fantastic work ethic. I am annoyed by everyone blaming everything on Tannehill.
40 inches. The guy has a 40 inch vertical leap that he doesn't use at all. He also had a 129 inch broad jump to go with his 4.28 forty. Explosiveness has never been his issue. He's explosive, but he's not a quick twitch guy. His 3 cone and shuttle drills were very average for the WRs in his draft. Compare his 3 cone and shuttle drills to Brian Hartline's. Brian had a 4.12 shuttle and a 6.65 3 cone drill. Mike's was 4.28 in the shuttle and 6.90 in the 3 cone. When you watch him run his routes, you can tell that he's not very crisp and quick in changing directions and making other quick twitch moves.
The next time Tannehill hits him in stride on a deep pass will be a first. Sent from my Nexus 10 using Tapatalk
It will get better. It must. Both Wallace and Tanny are too talented to fail. They will work individually and together and there will hopefully be a new QB coach that can refine Ryan's deep game and a new offensive coordinator that can adjust the timing of the deep plays and get Wallace streaking to the post more often. There were too many near misses that I can't beleive will continue forever. Honestly, if there is one thing I am optimistic about going forward it's Ryan connecting deep with Wallace. Wallace is right, they had at least 10 near TDs, maybe more. Even if they can improve and connect on half of them, that is a big deal.
wallace has been pretty hard on himself from most of what I've read. Being arrogant doesn't seem to be his forte what so ever. This should come as a surprise to no one.
He has a 40 INCH VERTICAL!!??!?!??!? Why doesn't he go for the ball? He could have easily out jumped Millner in the end zone, at least drawing the foul.
I wish I could hear Tannehill say: "Mike and I will get together for an hour every day during the offseason to work on our timing on deep balls."
the one thing i noticed with wallace and why i dont have a problem with him like some other posters is he seemed to be open for at least one bomb every single game. when he says they left 14 TDs on the field he isnt kidding. and for a speed guy he's got good hands. if tannehill finds his groove with wallace, wallace will have a monster year
It's great that he gets open but deep balls are not that high percentage if the WR isn't going to fight for it. Obviously Tannehill needs to start hitting him in stride once in a while but most of the time Wallace is going to have to adjust to the ball and fight for it.
IMO....these quotes are dripping with sarcasm and snarky-ness.....it just reads as so smartassed! (is their a video for this?). I dont get the vibe he really means what he is saying. Dang each week I watched pass after pass fall incomplete and scream "Just high point the ball one time - Wallace!" and that would be a start...heck, I would settle for catching the ball at helmet height (or full arm length without jumping) one time instead of keeping your arms at waist height waiting for the ball to drop into it. CREATE the play yourself and not wait for Tannehill to create it for you if not PERFECT!
Every ball they have connected on past 15 yards, Wallace has had to adjust or fight for. Literally not one of those balls hit him anywhere near stride. This getting fixed = a top tier offense.
Tannehill needs to be better, no doubt (the timing and depth was off with wallace all season)....but "fighting for the ball" on EVERY (hyperbole) play only appears as such because Wallace is a WR that plays as if one arm is tied to his side...he ALWAYS (equal hyperbole) waits for the ball to drop down to him. And by doing so he invites a defender to attach him at a level "where traditionally all (more hyperbole) the hand fighting occurs". If Wallace would use the gifts he has, he would simply attack the ball or "high point the ball" just once, then most defenders would be all over his waist or armpits at best and never interfere with the ball....they would only interfere with him for PI to create a win/win for the play. Regardless of flag, the ball would be in his hands at a height most defenders would never get to. That alone would create more yards and TDs all season long.
Agree they both need to get better, but the root of the issue are the poorly thrown balls. Vs Carolina he showed that he CAN do well more aggressively going after bad throws. Wish he would've done it more but he seems to recognize that and plans on fixing it.
The first time that Tannehill hits him in stride and he doesn't drop it, or there isn't a cornerback to stuck with him and knocked it away with no effort will be the first.
Showed he can do what? Its still not showing a "high point" approach. I do hope/think a full off-season fixes Tannehills issues, and Wallace's issues. So many yards, points, penalties favoring us, and ToP would benefit this offense.
On both big plays early in that game Wallace showed he CAN adjust to underthrown balls and make plays.
