Kevin Gibride As OC

If the Giants let Kevin Gilbride go, I think he merits strong consideration as Sherman's replacement.

    Gilbride's system

Note the bolded. We find ourselves with a terrible OLine and bad raining game. I think Gilbride's system meshes well with our needs, with our young QB, and with the type of receivers we've been training here. Hartline, Gibson and Matthew are already making these reads at the line. Wallace has been improving at it, imo, though he is not precise in his breaks and routes so sometimes the accuracy and connection are off.

Overall we have the horses to run this QB friendly system and it's better for Tannehill than Sherman's, imo. Though tbh it sounds quite similar.

    Further to that…

Tannehill has already shown a great ability, imo, to make reads and call play changes at the line. This would take that to the next level. He is smart enough to run this system.

To adapt to the talent you have, and the ability to develop a QB. Those are two things we need in-house right now.

He's also a good teacher, and very aggressive in the passing game, which works in today's NFL.

The thing that will frustrate people is that, like Sherman, he can get away from the run. Still, in terms of transitioning styles, I think Gilbride is an excellent fit for what Tannehill and this offense already do, and to take that to the next level.

The other caveat is that the Giants offense and Manning regressed severely this year. Whether you lay that at Gilbride's feet is the debate currently happening in NY.

It's all back to the same deal, if Philbin is here it's unlikely they're going to hire an OC from a different offensive tree. It'll be a guy from one of the WCO-variants.

If we have another head coach, the whole thing is up in the air and Gilbride could be a possibly depending on whom.

    I'm strongly opposed to Gilbride

As a deeper dive into the systems, then… what are the fundamental differences between a run and shoot variant and a WCO variant.

My argument is that the differences are less today in 2013 than twenty years ago. There has been a convergence in the league toward more passing concepts, more 3 and 4 WR sets. Less power running. Less man blocking. And WR route concepts in our system are, similarly to Gilbride's determined by what the receiver is seeing pre-snap from his defender.

Now, the terminology is likely very different. But with Sherman rarely calling screens or draws, I'm not all that sure that the WCO we have been running is all that faithful to the trunk of the WCO tree anymore. I feel like it's dang near the Gilbride offense.

However, if there's an aspect I'm unaware of that differentiates them significantly, I'd love to learn it.

And is Gilbride a slam-dunk, incredible OC? No.

But he is a very solid one who's system is perfect for what we currently have on the roster. You could do far worse than him.

More info on the general philosophy… though again, I feel Gilbride's has evolved. For instance, he is more TE-friendly than a traditional run and shoot.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Run_&_Shoot

    - Now, this system probably necessitates a stouter RB. But I feel like we are already going to be drafting a RB regardless.
    - Another advantage, not really considered at the time, is that with this attack, a running QB becomes more dangerous as you are often in spread situations. That helps Tannehill too. And in this one-back set you can still run your read option plays.

    - Now, Gilbride DOES use TE's… and Charles Clay is a perfect guy for this system as he can also split wide.
    - The lack of a strong commitment to the run game is the biggest weakness of this system, imo. Gives me some pause for doubt.. though TWO Superbowl victories over the Pats running this offense assuages that somewhat. I believe they beat them regular season last year or the year before too.
    - Red zone offense would be a weakness too. This is an offense that when it's clicking is unstoppable. And when it sputters, it's gonna be tough to control the game.

IMO, Gilbride has held the Giants offense back, and if he leaves, I'm predicting Eli Manning having one of his top 3 seasons as a pro in 2014.

The same tendencies of the offense not showing up for 5 or 6 games a season has manifested in New York the same as we saw with our team this year.

They managed to have a highly productive offense once since Gilbride has been the OC (2008). The running game went from really good in Gilbride's first couple years to bottom of the league recently. Eli Manning appears to have regressed in the prime of his career with a pretty solid WR unit.

And the Superbowl runs were ridden on the coat tails of their defense stepping up when it mattered most.

This guy is a big downgrade from Sherman, IMO

I like Gilbride as an offensive mind. I'm more interested in Gus Malzahn as HC with playcalling duties.

Finally… do we have the horses to run it…

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Run_&_Shoot

    - Mobile QB with some size? CHECK
    - Running Back - NEED
    - Wide Receivers - Well, Philbin has opted for a mix around 6'0-6'1 and 190-205. Not far off here. We don't have 6'4" 220lb receivers here.
    - OL - I think this is what Philbin has been trying to get for our system already, with mixed success. Again, we will be addressing this area in the draft anyways as a need, may as well get the pieces to run this system.

Won't argue that. But assuming a Head Coaching change doesn't occur… and Sherman is OUT… who do we get?

Honestly, I feel like Gilbride is similar to Sherman in some frustrating ways.. but still, I feel like he is better than Sherman.

If Sherman were a 6/10 I'd consider Gilbrdie a guy who will give you an 8/10 season followed by a 6/10 season followed by a 7/10 season. And at this point, that's an improvement on Sherman, friendly to Tannehill's skill set imo, and most importantly Gilbride may actually be available.

I want to spend time on candidates we may actually be able to hire. Don't think Malzahn is more than a very long longshot.

Uhhh, except for that fantastic late drive for the TD....and the run game was a part of that...Yes, their D stepped up, but the O got it done and that last drive was unbelievable...I'm neither here nor there, because a) I don't think Sherman is going to be fired and if he is, it's likely that it's because the whole staff is gone and b) even if Sherman is fired I don't think there is much of a connection between Philbin (and the WCO) and Gilbride...Gilbride is closer to Norv Turner's style than WCO...

You're right about everything sort of melting together, and no one runs offenses like originators of the offensive "trees". It shouldn't be impossible to find enough points of agreement for this kind of thing to work, either.

In practice though, it really doesn't happen much.

That's fair, but those late drives in both of those games required a dropped INT from A. Samuel, a freakish escape from Eli Manning, a miracle catch by a guy who has yet to play another snap in the NFL, another circus catch from Mario Manningham.

None of which can at all be attributed to Gilbride. Point being is that througout those playoff runs and especially the season, the offense was not potent at all.

Oh, hell no BPK. there's not a single Giants fan in the world that likes having Gilbride as an O-coordinator.

Yeah, I'm guessing Buddy was pissed to have Gilbride have the QB drop back and pass with the team up 14-0 and backed up on their own goal line with the half expiring instead of protecting the football and running. Buddy's way of saying "Thanks for exposing the ball and putting my D in a ****ty position."

One of the reasons people dislike Glibride. Then again, that sort of refusal to sit on his hands, that always-attack mentality is what I want from an offensive co-odinator at the end of the day.

    The anti-Henning.

I'll gladly take that ride for a few years if it includes at least one Lombardi trophy before we get rid of him.

Now he's free. I don't believe this was really retirement so much as him saving face by avoiding being publicly fired.

I'd like to see us at least interview him and 'talk him out of retirement'.

Again, I don't think he is a lot better than Sherman, but I think he IS marginally better, and when he's clicking with the talent, his QB's thrive and develop. his strengths mesh with our needs and roster too imo.

His flaws parallel Shermans, but my read on Gilbride is:
    1) His 'great' seasons are better than Sherman's 'great' seasons imo
    2) He knows how to beat the Pats and has done so multiple times. That has to be worth something.

The Giants pass-rush had a lot to do with "beating the Pats"
