WOA! Did anyone else hear about this?!! Brent Grimes wife is in the running to replace Ireland as GM! Apparantly Brent Grimes wife was having an affair with Mike Sherman (who secretly runs the team). Can't believe I was able to put two and two together and figure this out!
Link is... ww-.-.uh, hold on...i've got it here somewhere.....

I don't know whether this stuff is a bunch of BS or not, but either way the franchise is still the big fat disaster its been for most of the 21st century.

I have no idea what is truth or what is fiction in regards to this article. What I do know is that the team can not go into next season with the same GM and the same coaching staff it has had for the past two seasons.

It is Ross who is suppose to be the person running this organization. Yet the head coach doesn't appear to want to fire his friend and mentor. I am sure that Ireland is in Ross's ear telling him that the problem isn't the talent on the team, but the lack of coaching this talent has received.

Whether or not the GM and the coaching staff are blaming one another for another season of failure. The fact is that Ross needs to take control of the situation and get rid of some people on this staff.

If he decides that the talent isn't very good. He needs to get rid of the man who selected that talent, Ireland. If on the other hand he believes the coaches were more responsible for the players playing below their talent level. He needs to tell Philbin to replace those coaches and if Philbin refuses to do so, Ross should just fire Philbin and the entire coaching staff.

I just see no way that this team can go into next season with the same coaching staff it had this year and the same GM. Of course when you have an owner as inept as Ross, anything is possible. I keep hoping that the major decision Ross when come too after this latest evaluation of the team is that he has no solutions and he just wants to sell the team and get out of the NFL. That is the one thing which would be best for this franchise and for the fans of the Miami Dolphins.

Apparently Ross doesn't get his info from the deadbeat writers at the Herald. He can talk directly to Ireland, Philbin etc and might actually know what's going on. But you just keep listening to Armando and co. and you wonder why things don't make sense to you.

I love how the media is making a mountain out of no information. They have not got any more clue as to what is going to happen than any of us on this board do...

We'll know when Ross decides what, if anything, he's going to do. Everything being reported today, so far, is the same things we heard yesterday, Wednesday, Tuesday, Monday and Sunday, for that matter...

I'm fine if Ireland stays, though I'd prefer he go. If that is the case, this will be his make or break year. Anything less than 10 wins will be a let down regardless of playoffs.

I am not however okay with Sherman staying under any conditions.

Deja vu? Stop me if you've heard this already. "Make or break year for Ireland" "At least 10 wins and a playoff birth or else"

How many more years does he continue to get the benefit of the doubt?

You simply cannot be fine with Ireland staying. You might not lose your mind, go on a diatribe, and curse the organization to the heavens, but you cannot be fine with it.

I'm fine with it because I was on board with giving him this season and then evaluating.

Having done that, I'm at the point where I'd rather move on. However if he stays ill live with it and hope that a new and hopefully capable OC can make a difference. Cant say I'm excited about him running our draft, but you know what....if he does so be it. Hopefully he will make the right choices.

This next season no doubt becomes make or break for everyone involved.

Agreed, year 3 is normally when you say "show me what ya got".

Ireland certainly hasn't shown much of a sense of urgency over the past couple years, at times Philbin seems more interested in speeding Tannehill's development than in scoring as much as possible, I think all of that changes in 2014.

Way to jump to conclusions... I never said what the article said was true, I simply stated that if I was Ross, and I found out the guy I hired to be head coach based on his pitch that made me want to hire him to be my coach is actually not the one leading the team, but his offensive co-ordinator is, then I'd be pissed, and want to get rid of them all. I was offering my personal opinion... on what I'd consider doing if I was him. wow...

No Offense but what changes do you see in 2014? More urgency? Was there any urgency this season? The excuses given to the GM, the coaching staff and the players are never ending. I have no dog in this fight, just want to win and be relevant again. Not the false relevance that alot on here thought. You know...We turned the corner, Nobody wants to play us in the playoffs, we match up well with Cincy in the first round.lol. I want to have faith that week in and week out we are prepared to play. That we have talented self motivated players. That we have a coaching staff in place ready to make sure this will happen. We failed in all 3 aspects. To say that I see this changing next year, with the same group of characters, would be lying to myself. Next year is our year is a motto that has failed us for decades. Especially when it looks like no changes are coming.

I can't speak for Alex, and forgive me if I'm off base about what he really meant, but every weakness this team has/has had over the years cannot all be traced back to moves that JI made or did not make. If Ross, Ireland, Philbin and co. get together and decide that keeping the group intact is what is best for this coming year, how can we as fans complain. They have the inside track on what has and has not transpired. The media are a bunch of buffoons and you can't believe anything they say. The thing is, many fans (and I was one of them) thought in Aug. that 7-9 was going to be a good year. Guess what, we were wrong. We are all disheartened by the last 2 games of the year, that doesn't mean that JI caused those losses. He contributed to them, just like Philbin, Ross, Sherman, Coyle and EVERY single player did.

For us to think that it's fine, doesn't mean we want another 8-8 season, but it also doesn't mean that we think the JI has done NOTHING to help this organization. Unfortunately, you and I don't decide who goes and who stays. That's on Ross. I still can't help but wonder how folks would be feeling today if we are busy preparing for Cincy today instead of watching absolutely NOTHING happen in Davie...

I think that is a good summary of the entire problem with this discussion. It is hard for me to take seriously the people who think JI is the worst General Manager in the NFL and is at a Matt Millen level. Even if there are valid points as to why Ireland shouldn't have a job, taking it such an extreme just makes the point look so much less valid.

There are a lot of people who were saying Ireland should be fired even if Miami wins the Super Bowl. Just makes me think people just don't like the guy.

I was speaking about him saying that he would be "fine" with Ireland staying. I cannot believe that anyone would be "fine" with him staying. You can be the group that would absolutely lose their mind if he stays, or you can be the group that would be disappointed if he stayed, but would not necessarily blow a gasket over it. I believe he meant he was the latter and that is a very reasonable attitude, but i just can't think anyone at this point in time would be "fine" with Ireland remaining.

As to what you wrote, I disagree that every weakness cannot be attribute to Ireland. IMO every weakness cannot be solely attributed to him and him alone, but he is the man in charge of building the roster, and if the roster has glaring holes, then he deserves criticism for it.
I also disagree that fans cannot complain if all the parties decide that what is best for the team is to stay put. It is true they have inside track and possess knowledge that we do not, however that does not mean all the decisions are made for the benefit of the team, and with the benefit of the team in mind. There are politics at play here. There is money at play here. There is power struggle at play here. When people are too busy trying to keep their job, sometimes they forget to do their job, and sometimes make decision based on their own well-being, and not that of the entity.

You're right to say that we cannot think Ireland has done NOTHING, however I don't think the point is he has done nothing, but rather that he has not done enough and he has had plenty of time to do so.

TBH, I didn't see much urgency from the tactical or strategic level.

Ireland drafted a bunch of guys who were hurt and/or raw and unlikely to be significant contributors in 2013. He also jettisoned a slew of established veterans and replaced them with younger, more unproven players. He left a bunch of unused cap space that will carry over to 2014. Does that sound like a guy who was under pressure to win right away? When Ross was asked whether Ireland needed to produce a playoff team in 2013 he basically said that he wasn't looking to be a 1 year wonder or chase a playoff birth, that he wanted to build a consistent winner and that Rome wasn't built in a day. I'm as skeptical of public statements as anyone but what Ross says seems to match what Ireland is doing personnel wise.

Philbin didn't seem overly concerned with piling up wins either, TBH. He has this even keel to him and you can't really tell if he's on a 3 game winning or losing streak. He seemed to stick to his core philosophies whether they were working or not. He didn't do much to jump start the run game, it was the same basic plays over and over. He didn't move Wallace around or make any special effort to get him involved. He didn't move Tannehill outside the pocket or allow him to use his legs. We didn't see any trick plays, on side kicks, fake punts of FGs, etc. Despite the pass pro issues there was never much of an effort to utilize screens or draws. That's just off the top off my head. People want to blame Sherman for the play calling but judging by how consistent the trends were and Philbin's very vocal support for him, I have to assume Sherm was acting according to Philbin's instructions. Again, not much of a sense of urgency.

What I'm saying is that given what happened in 2013 I think Ireland and Philbin will both be under increased pressure and act accordingly. It won't be hard to tell.

Under pressure or not, this behavior by Philbin seems rational to you? That he should do nothing to "pile up wins"? Isn't that the goal? Aren't you trying to win as many games as possible every year?

  28. Larryfinfan

    Larryfinfan 17-0...Priceless Club Member

I don't really disagree with you, but unfortunately for us, Ross makes those decisions and to date, he's felt JI has done enough to keep his job.
Assuming there really is no 'smoking gun' on the bully-gate thing, I would assume that Ross has made a decision about the guys in question OR he is re-evaulating his position from prior to the last two losses, given the scope of those games. I don't think he's looking at prior to 2011 when Philbin joined the group, either, which takes away a lot of the 'damage' the Fireland group has. I don't care whether JI stays or goes, but I do care that they get this organization back on the right track. Are we headed up or down...at this point, most of us don't think we are headed up, but Ross and crew just may feel that way... If so, maybe NO changes are made... From a PR perspective that would be the worst decision he could make. But in his position, I don't think he is going to be scared into firing Ireland or anyone else for that matter because of how the fanbase thinks... The majority of the income from this venture comes from television/satellite/cable venues and NFL gear sales not from season ticket sales. Besides, he knows how fickle the fanbases are anyways. Just look at how things got stirred up prior to the jills and jests games...

I am 'fine' with JI, if Ross deems it so. I have to be. I won't stop watching or following the fins because of it and the best I can do to show my disdain is to not attend games (of course, I now live in NC and can't attend games, so that won't matter anyway). Getting on these boards and continually bringing up my disdain for anything JI isn't an option for me, although it seems to make others happy doing it (you guys know who you are....LOL). That's fine and I love reading their rants... I just think 'fine' means something different to everyone. In a month, this will be over and we'll be talking about the Senior bowl and the draft and who we might be interested in. We'll be fine then, even if JI is still here...

It's all cool, but it does get old, to me, to constantly hear that the only thing wrong with the Fins is JI... What will they say if JI is fired and next year we are 8-8 ?? Will it still be his fault ?? Sorry, just ranting myself...

You make it sound like the GM and the Head Coach took this as an exhibition season. No reason to make adjustments or try different things because....you know...The owner is not pressuring us to win now?! We are saving these changes and secret weapons till we feel the pressure to win? Ireland spent all that money on Wallace and those two LB's because he knew he did not have to win in 2013? You really think this is what Ross, one way or another, relayed to the people in charge.Your perception of a lack of urgency can be viewed as incompetence, no need to win now, we have a 3 yr plan? If this is the case, which I doubt, neither should be surprised that their jobs are both on the line.

I can't really disagree with anything you said, except perhaps I'd be more disappointed if Ireland were to be kept. I just think at this point he is what he is, and even though the team could gamble, fire him and do worse, I just think it is a gamble worth making. At some point the fear of the unknown cannot be the only reason the team continues to accept mediocrity.
Though you're right Ross is the man with the power, and what he says goes. All we can do here is speculate and fight with each other.

Bottom line is, if nothing at all is done then it appears that what happened this season is acceptable. Certainly not acceptable by us fans, so how the hell can it be acceptable by Ross.? Hes the one signing the checks and admittingly was disgusted by the seasons outcome. Heads should have rolled by now but it hasnt happened. Other teams have already announced new coaches and made changes but once again the Dolphins have their thumbs up their asses.

Funny that 2013 was suppose to be Ireland's make or break year. He was loaded with draft picks and spent over $100 million dollars on free agents. All these draft picks, (which hardly contributed at all), and the free agents provided this team was one more win than in the 2012 season.

So exactly how does failure in what was suppose to be his make or break year in 2013, earn him the chance at another make or break year in 2014. I swear some fans just don't get the fact that Ireland is not a very good GM and the longer he remains this teams GM, the longer it is going to take for this team to actually become a successful football team.

That's a very good question. I don't know if there's any "right way" to approach it, I'm just trying to explain what Philbin's approach was, as best as I can.

You could argue that winning is always most important, you could also argue that our best chance of being an actual contender is getting Tannehill to his ceiling as quickly as possible. Based on what I saw last year I have to think they were leaning towards the latter.

IF they were emptying the playbook to try and win games in 2013 then they are among the worst offensive minds I've ever seen at the Pro level.

Then his approach was ridiculous and is an immediate fireable offense and he should be blackballed from ever coaching at the NFL level again.

Even the Jaguars were trying to win every game they played and played the guys they thought were best. You can develop a QB and win. You can watch Seattle and Indy in the playoffs to see how that works

Because frankly he has a very good case the team should have won more games and been in the playoffs, which is obvious because the #1 target Ross and co. are looking at is Sherman.

I could care less if he's gone and a very good reason could easily be his negative image, but imo and many others, the team should have won more games with the talent on the field if coaching didn't lay many eggs.
