And the Dolphins somehow managed to go 8-6 despite Tannehill misfiring on the deep ball time and again. They lost their last two games largely because he never could fix the problem.

Tannehill completed just 25 percent of his passes thrown 20 yards or longer this season, and threw more interceptions (six) than touchdowns (three) on attempts of that length.

Mike Wallace had only five touchdowns all season. Considering how open as he consistently found himself, he could have had 10 more, including one on a play that defines this wasted season.

The Dolphins were leading the offensively impotent Jets 7-0 in the first half when Wallace, yet again, got behind the secondary. A completion there could have put the game out of reach. Instead, Tannehill overthrew his receiver, and the Dolphins did not score again in 2013.

“It was missed opportunities we had,” Tannehill said after the Jets game. “We had a couple drops, miss-throw to Mike on a stutter-go, he’s got 3 yards on a guy and I overthrew him; that would have been a touchdown.”

I saw Alex Smith miss a wide open receiver yesterday and also throw it too close to the sidelines for him to catch another possible TD inbounds. So it happens. The problem for Tannehill and Sherman is it happens more often than it should. Tannehill needs to improve his percentage of completions on long passes and he won't do that with Zac Taylor and Sherman as his coaches.

I agree with the whole article.People are so quick to place the franchise label on him based on what?Right now he is the only starting 2012 qb class that has not led his team to the playoffs even with a golden opportunity to just win one game against the two worst teams in the division. His lack of a deepball has cost us numerous games and not to mention all those mid season fumbles.Ryan tannehill is not andrew luck who is a franchise qb because he makes everyone around him better.Tannehill has not showed he is anywhere near capable of doing what luck did yesterday. And yes we are more talented than the colts.

No, but it makes me think that Houston might be able to hit a draft jackpot with Clowney and Taj Boyd at the top of rd 2. This year's Russell Wilson imo.

I agree with the post. Tanny left a whole lot of points on the field this year... IM not blaming him for our failures this season, but I just feel he needs to lose the shackles and just play. He looks to mechanical, too coached. Hopefully he comes out and shows us what he's capable of next season.

I would also love to see a higher tempo on offense and just run it no matter what looks the D is giving us, unless we see a glaring weakness we need to audible out of. It seemed like we would break the huddle and get to the line in good time, but once there RT would take forever trying to read the defence and the playclock would run down to below 3 seconds. It seemed were always running a play based on the what the Defence was giving us - which I understand we need to do but on a high percentage of plays to the determent of getting into a groove? seemed like overthinking every play on Offense. it just felt out of whack and off tempo and again too mechanical. that's gotta be on Sherman + RT. and I think that added to the pain of the OL. hiking the ball with 3 sec left on the clock is a lot different than hiking with 9 sec.

Just another thing we need to improve in the offseason.

Miami Dolphins’ Ryan Tannehill ends season on low note

The beauty of the Tannehill situation is that we are going into the third year. For him, there are no more excuses. He'll now be expected to elevate the team and perform at a high level.

I have been a Tannehill supporter but the fact is his timing issue with Wallace (Wallace has some fault too) has cost him 5+ TDs, around 300 yards and the team at least two wins (Panthers and Jets).

I would advocate drafting a QB - even relatively early. Green Bay once drafted Brian Brohm in the 2nd round with Favre and Rodgers on the roster. Some players need that pressure to play their best.

Tannehill must step up in year 3.

On this issue, part of me would be ok with everybody coming back next year. Let's let this thing ride out for one more year. See if Philbin and Sherman can get us to the playoffs. See if Tannehill can progress to above average or better.

I am ok with this because if they all fall flat on their face, the top of the 15 draft looks stacked with QBs...Winston, Hundley, Mariotta.

It was obvious..Wallace with 3 steps, Tannehill whiffs the throw consistently.

They did have a nice run late in the yr, and we won ballgames, when they were not on the same page the offense struggled mainly due to a lack of a consistent running game.

Connecting on the deep ball is correctable. They'll improve. If Tannehill were way off accuracy wise or not seeing guys, then there's a problem. Seems like it's as much a timing issue than anything

AmaZing that he put up nearly identical numbers to that guy who he isn't. Your post is entirely opinion with no fact to back it up.....which is fine. I'm just saying if you want to be taken seriously and change minds bring some statistical analysis and compare/contrast the context of the situation to other QBs.

You know what else has cost us numerous games? Mike Sherman, a crappy defensive scheme, Jeff Irelands weak free agent hauls or poor drafts (its always one), and poor OL play. Sherman in particular is cancerous though because not only do his play calls suck but Im not sure he really believes in Ryan Tannehill enough to "unleash" him. Hes the same guy who benched Tannehill and moved him to a different position in college and now hes pro coordinator? How does that work? "Ryan, I know I moved you to WR in college. I was wrong. Youre the man now. Go turn and hand off to Miller and Thomas on first and second down and then on 3rd and 10 ill call a crappy pass play."

25% completion rate doesn't actually sound that bad. Our problem is that our offense needs that big play so badly because we're inconsistent every where else. So when we don't connect on it, we all feel it that much worse. We also don't call the deep ball nearly enough. All of this, IMO, is on Sherman.

I fault both of our losses to the Bills to our offensive coaches. They match up well with out weaknesses and Sherman did absolutely nothing to counter that.

The truth is we are basically relying on our QB for our entire offense, like a lot of teams with elite QB's do. He did alright, but couldn't come through completely. He's only a second year QB who was inexperienced to begin with. Honestly if he was better at this deep ball this year, he's sitting at around 28-29 TD's 14 ints and like 4300 yards. This team would also be in the playoffs, maybe as the 2 seed. He would be getting talks of elite and we wouldn't be having threads like this at all.

In reality we are a mastery of one throw by Tannehill away from having a playoff team and very very good QB. And all of this with the worst offensive line in the history of the NFL and no running game. We are close people

Luck has the it factor the great ones have.Case in point he has taken a below average team to the playoffs 2 years in a row and had one the greatest comebacks in playoff history yesterday while our guy chokes against the jets.So don't give me numbers because they don't mean squat.Ask me if you think tony room and matt statford are winners?

Your equating Andrew Luck with Ryan Tannehill based on comparative stats is a great example of why stats should be used as a secondary tool. Ryan Tanehill is no Andrew Luck.

Andrew Luck also plays in the worst division in football by a comfortable margin. We'd be in the playoffs too if we played in the AFC South

Based on the fact that we are a better team than the Titans, Texans, and Jags? Since we are using single games do you think the Dolphins are a better team than the Colts, Bengals, and Chargers?

I'd hate to see the rivalries go but if the NFL is pretending that region matters then the Colts should have been in the AFC North, the Ravens in the AFC East, and the Dolphins in the AFC South.

Never said that. It's not the AFC South though. The Colts went 5-5 against teams not in their division. Miami went 6-4 including a win over the Colts.
