Per Darlington on NFLN, sources say "familiar names" will rise to the top in the near future regarding Dolphins now open GM position.

He says Ross "will not settle" regarding new 'football czar'. Ross high on Aponte and she is likely staying with team along with Brian Gaines. Both will likely retain same positions with team.

Aponte and Gaine will stay with the team but are not being promoted.

I always thought it was interesting that Peterson is Ross' confidant, if you will. Peterson publicly defended Ireland a while back, which was odd. Guess Jeff needed that backing in the public's eyes to justify his GM ability. Could have been a Ross PR move, in hindsight.

Let's see what Ross can do. I suspect it may be a no-brainer, no-nonsense move. Do not know how closely Peterson has been regarding the team, but I believe he has attended games with Ross.

I’ve already heard from multiple people around NFL asking what Dolphins will do at GM. High interest. This is going to be VERY coveted role.

Sorry if this has already been posted, too much information for me to go through right now...

So much for all the ones saying there would be no interest in the job. One of 32 gigs, with an owner who has shown a willingness to not be quick on the trigger. Ireland was given his big chance and failed immensely.

Let's hope so! To me it's a sign that people are liking the direction the team is taking and the overall talent on the team, more specifically Ryan Tannehill.

I like this new, quiet Ross. Fired Sherman and Ireland, hasn't said anything to the media yet. Usually he goes to the public and says something obnoxious like he got so much money and he won't be outbid, as if he's purchasing antique cars or some ****.

uh, no. It's a "VERY coveted role" because they probably realize it's a near blank canvas (save a maybe-franchise qb) and they'll be allowed to paint for at least 5-6 off-seasons.

Seems he learned something with the 'Harbaugh' experiment... I'm not too sure that Peterson is our guy. It wouldn't be a shock, but he already is connected with Ross thru other parts of his business. I don't think he wants to put himself in a position where he may potentially have to fire his friend and business partner in the future....just sayin' ?

Not from the jests end of this, but I'm not too keen on either Tannenbaum or Mangini. Tannenbaum made a mess of personnel acquistions in NY, so much so that it cost him his job and nearly cost Rex his, and Rex, much as I hate saying this, is head and shoulders a better HC than Philbin. Mangini is rumored to want into the FO position, as opposed to coach...but he has too much Belichek personality in him (without BB ability, that is)...

The jest connection flows strongly in Mr. Ross.... I'm not convinced that's a good thing for us...

Can I honestly ask why? I don't understand that stance, he has no experience in that type of role and would generally have been thought of as a good but not great coach had he not FINALLY broken through with that Super Bowl after so many years.

I have a feeling the new GM will either fire Philbin or force Philbin to promote within/make him call plays and then next season he decides what to do about Philbin, kind of like the Jets/Rex situation this past season except, Philbin has a lot more talent on his team and cap space to improve via free agency as well, so there's no excuses.

Maybe Stephen Ross will let the new GM go all Bob Ross:

"Paint a happy little tree here. A nice winding river here....."

We had the veritable Jackson Pollock in Ireland: splatter around crap and see what sticks. (Is that bad that I put Pollock and Ireland in the same sentence?)

Agreed...this will very much be a make or break year for Philbin, if he stays. Any true, stout head coach would relish the challenge considering all the up arrows surrounding this team.

A blank canvas? Come on. There are quite a few good players here, most of which are still young. It's an appealing job because we're close enough that the new guy gets to come on and do what's necessary to put us over the top.

I don't care if Ross hires those two knuckleheads GM JOHNSON and FIN D to be general manager, it will be an upgrade as Jeff has single handily set the franchise back about 2 years, but alas there is hope. I don't expect a division title next year but within the next 3 years I guarantee this team will be a perennial playoff team and superbowl contender. Mark my words, the curse is over !!!!

    It's about time.

Soooooooooooooo...Ireland did get some good talent. :wink2:

Exactly right. :knucks: Ireland didn't get it done fast enough for this fan base, but we had high school JV dropouts on this team before he stocked the shelves. Did he hit every need, no, but we are tons ahead of where we were before he got here.

To many people's chagrin, this job is attractive because of Tannehill, Philbin and the fact that we are only an oline away from competing.

I'd leave Philbin out of that list. In fact, I think it's attractive for exactly the opposite reason... if next year the Dolphins fail to make the playoffs, or regress, Philbin and the coaching staff are likely the first ones out the door, which means the GM will be able to handpick his coach.
    Essentially it's a win-win for the GM.

The "appealing" only comes in the power. If Ross/Aponte/Gaine limit that power somehow, the role becomes much less appealing and the interest will fade fast.
