1) I don't think Ross is in over his head. 2) Off the top of my head? No. I'd have to do interviews, gauge interest and so on. I'm not convinved we need some czar. I'm even less convinced Cowher is qualified to pick a GM. He's basically a Jeff Fischer who didn't get stopped at the 1 yard line. As a FO guy he's probably a carbon copy of Parcells in terms of how much success he will have.
Isn't this thread about him leaving the Dolphins? Why? I think most of us are just happy Ireland is moving on. A competent GM - why do we also need a Parcell's type Czar again, who has never been in that position before? And why Cowher of all people?
Glad to hear this, but still have to wonder who will be advising him and whether the right choice will be made. Also, any prospective GM may say "I want to pick my own head coach". To which, I believe Ross will reply, "Well, ya gotta give Joe a year at least… I promised him." That's my read on it. On another note, Ross kinda reminds me of Mr. Carlson from WKRP in Cincinnati. A likable enough, heck even a lovable enough guy, but wishy washy on decisions until Andy Travis and Herb would get in his ears and convince him which way to go. Don't be surprised if our 2014 Miami Dolphins Thanksgiving promotion is like this...
Sounds like a totally empty platitude. There's no obvious blue chip GM prospect to throw everything at.
Faxed my resume' over last week, no response. BTW, mind telling us what your previous user names are?
Agreed, doubt he would be a detractant from the position. Plus the GM (and Philbin) will both likely know that if Joe doesn't perform next year, a new coach will be brought in. Win win for a GM, almost a "free year" essentially. If Joe works out, then he already had a great coach. If not, its a "well Philbin didn't work out and it cost us the season but I'll bring in better!"
Who here would be upset at this being a highly coveted role? Only speaking for myself, but I thought the only turd in the punchbowl that is our Miami Dolphins was Jeff Ireland. Now that he's gone, I'm sure it is a coveted role. As I said before, I still worry a GM might not want to be told he HAS to keep Philbin, but I'm not even so worried about that anymore.
Yeah, that's exactly what I meant.. it doesn't necessarily mean Philbin will actually help to attract a good GM, just that it won't matter to him because either way it works out for the GM.
These are facts: 1. Jeff Ireland is the reason Jim Harbaugh didn't come to Miami. 2. Jeff Ireland is the reason the team didn't get Jeff Fisher. 3. Jeff Ireland is the reason the team was not a legitimate option for Peyton Manning. This guy is universally hated in the NFL. He is looked upon as an incompetent fool who rode Bill Parcells's coat tails to a position that was above what his ability is. He's marked by the NFLPA for how he treats players. As long as he was around, the Miami job was never going to be attractive.
When will candidate names coming out? Does a GM come with his own scouting team or do we use Irelands crappy scouts?
Omar Khan would be a nice guy to pick up. There are a few younger guys like Decosta who also has a been part of some good drafting. I could see them do something with Marino in the Elway role and promote Gaine. CK was mentioning something on twitter and I totally agree. Or put Marino in a super czar role and grab an actually GM. Hopefully we do something right and I feel Ross finally gets it.
For me in order to "not settle" Ross needs to get the top guy no matter if he wants to bring in his HC or not, otherwise you're just settling for a guy who will work with Philbin.
I have an inside source with the team who showed me the head shot you included with your resume - Sorry GM, couldn't resist…
That would be pretty cool, maybe not in an actual "czar" role with complete control over everything, but in some sort of role where he gives important input. It would be nice if JT had some sort of role as well, that would definitely give the franchise a little more respect.
Because stability and consistency are the keys to competing in the NFL and Ross hasn't come close in 5 years. How long did it take Jimbo?
An oline and resigning our key defensive free agents away. If we do well building the OL, but lose all of Starks, Soliai and Grimes, well that wouldn't be an any better overall situation, IMO.
. Sh&$ or get off the pot...if Philbin has got the coaching talent, then he should be able to inspire his team..if not, force all rookie and 2nd year players to play, fire coach at first sign of the team tanking.
I think he complimented you. Despite being a knucklehead you'd be a better GM than Ireland. Now ain't that a pretty nice thing to say?
What specifically is so good about Khan? You want a GM who'll be in charge of personnel that hasn't a background in personnel?
OR maybe this is an indirect result of that supposed council that Ross assembled to handle the Martin/Incognito situation. Ross may getting advice from people like Marino and Moore
Carl Peterson will undoubtedly be offered the position of Vice President of Football Operations and with his record, who could blame Ross for doing so? While serving as President, General Manager and CEO of the Kansas City Chiefs some of Peterson's acquisitions to the Kansas City staff/roster included... Marty Schottenheimer Joe Montana Marcus Allen Derrick Thomas Dick Vermeil Tony Gonzalez Priest Holmes Larry Johnson The list goes on and on but the bottom line is that Peterson's record on acquiring TALENT is undeniable. However, whether or not that ability of his has come and gone is difficult to say. Parcells' record was also undeniable but we saw how the game had passed the Tuna and he ruined the Dolphins with his cronyism. I will say though that I believe one of the biggest differences between Peterson and Parcells is that Peterson doesn't have the ego that came with the Tuna. I see Peterson as more of a Bill Polian...a behind the scenes guy who just has a talent for acquiring talent and with the well known relationship Ross has with Peterson, I can't see Ross NOT offering him the position. JMHO
I don't think any of the other candidates have even comparable black marks to their name as Heckert Jr. does. GM's don't often get second chances, and Heckert Jr.'s claim to one is pretty dubious.
1. Its not a given that will happen with Peterson. In fact, the odds are not in its favor of happening. 2. To say Peterson doesn't have an ego problem is like saying Rex Ryan doesn't have a giant mouth.
Except Ireland didn't negotiate contracts. Aponte does 95% if not 100% of that. So either Miko is an idiot....possible, or this line od reasoning is wrong.
