With owner Stephen Ross opting once again for half measures, the mess will continue. A new G.M. will inevitably want his own coach. A new G.M. will have concerns about whether Aponte is aligned with the coach against the G.M. Inevitably, the best available candidate for the G.M. position won’t want the job, because the best available candidate will be smart enough to steer clear of a churning, toxic stew. Instead of a cycle that consists of firing the coach one year and then firing the G.M. two years later and then firing the coach two years after that and so on, Ross at some point needs to press the reset button, fire everybody, start over, and stick with whatever alignment he puts in place for more than two or three years. http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2014/01/08/dolphins-dysfunction-could-undermine-g-m-search/
This is ridiculous. Its already been reported by Darlington (who has a lot of Dolphin and NFL connections) yhat our GM position is highly coveted around the league. I take thst article with a grain of salt.
With Armando as the source and genesis of the article. Talk about trash not even worthy of material to wipe your azz with.
Maybe the job is coveted because the team has a deep pockets owner and it's in south Florida, but I'd doubt very much that it's coveted because Joe Philbon and Dawn Aponte are onboard. Net negatives imo, not net positives. As much as Ireland being the GM made me want to throw up, the idea of the weak HC Philbin and Aponte sneaking around like Siamese twin snitches makes me want to gag. Pathetic stuff for a once proud NFL franchise.
Mike Florio regurgitating crap written by his best bud Armando Salguero. The only worry Miami has of not getting a top flight GM is if Ross decides to go with VP of Football Operations route instead of placing that power with the new GM, as per Jason Cole's tweet last night. Asking the new GM to work with the incumbent head coach for 1 year is not a cause for concern, it happens all of the time. Last year, John Idzik was asked to do this with Rex Ryan, and Dave Gettleman of the Panthers was asked to work with Ron Rivera. Both kept their jobs. The year prior Phil Emery was asked to do the same Lovie Smith, who was fired for missing the playoffs. It puts Philbin on the hot seat to perform, and if he does then we, the fans win. If he doesn't then he gets fired and we, the fans win again by getting a new head coach. What isn't there to like?
So we got rid of Sherman AND IRELAND, and people STILL want to complain? I don't get this fanbase. Like we get what we want, and it's never enough. I haven't seen anyone, really, complain about Aponte, but with Ireland gone, apparently she's the new thing to complain about?
Its coveted because we are literally an offensive line and play caller sway from being a legitimate playoff threat, and that is before trying to upgrade positions like LB. Tannehill is thought of very highly around the league offices. It isn't often a GM gets to walk into a position where he already has a potential franchise QB. My two cents. Most GMs dont hire their coaches by the way guys. It isn't an NFL standard.
Start reading more carefully. Regardless of previous (and appreciated) firings, I think that Philbin should go, just too weak and uninspiring to be a head coach. Then add to that the tied to Aponte angle, the team coming out dead flat the last two games of the season... I don;t hate Philbin, I just don't think that he's the right man for the job. I'd rather see a strong leader as HC, and he's not it.
La Canfora tweeted the following yesterday:If the Dolphins run a true GM search, and if the GM is in fact a GM, (with final say and not reporting to some VP) it will be highly coveted This is Armando sour about Philbin being retained and Ireland getting canned. Florio reports everything Armando writes
I think this is going to be a very attractive job around the league. Great cap shape, coach who can be scapegoated in years one or two to buy additional time, owner who refused to fire previous GM despite missing the playoffs five straight years, young potential franchise QB, good pass rushers...
I don't know anyone on this site who actually likes or respects Armando, myself included, but for those who think that the dysfunctional issues began and ended with Ireland as opposed to the obnoxious Aponte and the weak Philbin- good luck on that one.
Read more carefully? As in, see stuff that isn't there? My problem is, before the Bills game, people were talking about Philbin as Coach of the Year candidate. Team comes out flat in last two games, he needs to be fired! RAAAAWWWWRRRR!! Put away the torches and pitchforks. Philbin deserves another year. Ireland assembled a dog**** oline, and Sherman was bad. If Philbin sucks it up next season, then send him packing. However, he deserves one more year. Not too mention, starting 3-0 twisted up people's expectations for the season. No one was thinking the Phins would go 10-6 or 11-5 in the preseason. This team overachieved at points, and underachieved at others...what a surprise for a young team that faced a lot of adversity in the season.
There's absolutely maliciousness behind this being released, but there's really no reason not to believe it's true. There is a pretty clear and plausible connection of dots here based on the relationships behind the scenes. Ireland and Philbin didn't get along, Philbin and Aponte did, and there was some ****-smearing going on in the "investigation" after the season. There's absolutely a fear that Stephen Ross could say or do some dumb **** in regards to Philbin and Aponte that would turn off GM candidates.
It seems to me that the SuperGM thing might have been explored specifically because of Ireland's presence and Steve Ross' intention to get Ireland to accept a change of duties to where he doesn't have final say. Now that Ireland is out it may well be that Ross is now just looking for a GM. But that doesn't make me feel better about the organizational structure as you still essentially have four department heads reporting to an absentee owner who is too busy with his other businesses to keep an eye on the departments.
Read more carefully in that there has been criticism of Aponte on this site earlier this year. As to Philbin- I'm all for the sacking of Ireland, but what kind of input did Philbin, the former OL specialist, have as per the OL personnel? Who brought on Jim Turner? Who brought on Mike Sherman and was insistent on keeping him? Is Philbin the strong leader that an NFL coach should be? And in an attempt to not be subjected to the bs that I've previously read from some other posters, a strong leader doen;t have to be a rah-rah speech making guy- what he has to be is a strong leader. That can be Bellichick style or whatever. And Philbin, imo, is not a strong leader. Weak personality, weak presence, and the being shadowed by Aponte stuff was over the top weak. I feel bad for Philbin that he got saddle with the a-hole Ireland, but my preference would be to start fresh with a new GM and a new HC. I wasn't a big fan of Philbin before the last two games, but those games spoke volumes. Philbin might make a team a nice offensive coordinator, but as a head coach- I'll pass.
If its a Florio(PFT) piece about the Dolphins, the source is undoubtedly Armando.....so that being the case.....this entire story is bull****.
"No Steve. I don't want a higher paying prominent job that I'm guaranteed at least 3 years in where I'll pay no state income taxes. I'd rather be buried down here in my current organization and wait for the Packers, 49ers, Steelers, or Giants GM job to open" That will not be said by any of the people being interviewed. Miami will have their choice here. IMHO of course
Is that really the point, or is the point whether or not Philbin and Aponte are net negatives or net positives. If Miami has the competitive advantages of weather and no state taxes that's great, but don't act as if we haven;t been turned down before for coaching or FO vacancies. This isn't the premiere organization that it once was, let's not forget that.
This is pure rubbish. The Dolphin position offers a potential GM the hardest pieces of the puzzle to find with no strings attached. If Philbin and Tannehill prosper the Phins will prosper and the new GM will get credit. If they fail, well they weren't his guys and he will likely get to hire a new HC and draft or trade for a QB. All the glory and none of the blame, what's not to like. And Aponte being a deterrent is just plain silly. She is a capologist and by most accounts a damn good one at that.
If she's just a capologist, why was she on Philbin like whiteon rice for a good part of the season. Was that a part of her capology or contract negotiating duties. Was she the designated team snitch as per the whole Ireland/Philbin thing? If you're saying that she's just a capologist- time to wake up.
Sure, I think that's absolutely the point. Whoever the candidate may be will be getting: -more money -more responsibility from their current job -a promotion from their current job -stepping into a job with a relatively long leash (at least 3 years) -the opportunity to turn this back into the respected organization it once was This isn't a head coaching vacancy where > 5 positions open up every year in the NFL and another countless number open up in NCAA. And a HC is a much more riskier position. If you fail, you're on the hot seat in year 1 and year 2. The GM will have at least 3 years to prove his success This may be a once in a lifetime opportunity for these people. GM jobs aren't opening up consistently within those respected organizations like NY, Pitt, SF, GB, etc.
Everyone is on thin ice, including Philbin and Aponte. Yet both of those people have gotten some results and are still respected in league circles. That means a new GM has a free year where anything bad happens and he's not responsible but if anything good happens he's most likely to get credit. You cannot have more of a win-win.
