I dont believe it will be Peterson. He wont be looking to go with whats comfortable. I believe Ross will seek out advice..and has sought out advice on who he believes is the best person to shephard in a new era for this franchise. That is where he will go.

It's coveted, until the potential new GM finds out he can't fire his head coach.

Oh sure, mainly b/c he did not flat miss on any #1 picks and most of his #2 picks contributed, and his #5-6 rd picks also tended to over perform their draft status.

That said, what Ireland did NOT do was improve, same problems we have today we had in 2010

Most GM's can't fire the head coach. That's almost always an ownership decision. At best, the GM has input.

And Frankly, Philbin shouldn't be fired. He's a 2nd year HC who performed better in his first season than his second season. Despite all the personnel limitations he had to deal with. I don't care what money Ireland spent, the 2012 team was better.

Hmm, interesting. Never really thought about comparing the team in 2012 to 2013.

2012 had better running backs, offensive line, linebackers. 2013 had better receivers, quarterback play and secondary play. I'd say they were pretty close but we had more impressive wins in '13 than in '12.

I agree on Philbin though. He should get a 3rd year.

    That's not true. Most don't.

More than that though, Philbin has been just good enough that it wouldn't surprise anyone if he turns out good. If he bombs, he'll be gone and the GM can hire his own guy and the bombed season won't be his fault. If the season turns out great, the new GM will get a lot of the credit because he was the major change. You cannot get more of a win-win.

Have we not gotten rid of this myth yet?

You can count on one hand how many GMs can actually fire the head coach.

    EDIT: Typo

I disagree, most can. Contracturally, that is how most teams are set up, that traditional GM role. That has to be qualified, just as we've seen here, that firing the HC and his staff is a corrobative decision with the owner. The owner has to agree. He may not want to fire the HC, but the only way he can stop the HC from being fired, assuming the GM wants to, is to fire the GM first... I know that it's set up that way in Baltimore, Pittsburgh, Jacksonville, Atlanta, GB, jests, jills, to name a few. There only a few teams that the HC has the final say over the GM.

Just like it's written into Philbin's contract that he has say on his assistants, but he and the owner decided that parting ways with the OC was in the teams best interest. I don't beleive for a second that Philbin wanted to let Sherman go and it seems, by most reports and even tho the press releases indicated that it was Philbin's decision, that Ross wanted a scapegoat in the coaching ranks for the late season collapse. Heck, for all we know, Ross may have wanted Sherman, Turner and Taylor to go, but relented on the other guys as a compromise to Philbin. We also know that it's unlikely that Ross ever considered firing Philbin.

Where things got dysfunctional for us and many of us saw it, was that contracturally the asst coaches report to Philbin. So Ireland couldn't touch them, although he wanted to. So when Ross got involved, it got messy, seperating an already split up heirarchy... Our FO is wierd in that Aponte, who has to work with Ireland reports to Ross. Philbin reports to Ireland but Ireland can't mess with his coaches. Ireland has say on personnel and the HC, but Aponte can nix an acquistion if a suitable financial package can't be reached...It's set up to be dysfunctional and boiled over late in the season...

Lets see if the new GM can do things better...

That's not true. The GM can suggest or request a decision, but he can't unilaterally fire the head coach. Even Ozzie Newsome can't just come in and fire Jim Harbaugh. Steve Biscotti will make that decision.

Trent Baalke in San Francisco cannot fire Jim Harbaugh. John Idzik couldn't come in and fire Rex Ryan this past year. Dave Gettleman couldn't come in and fire Ron Rivera this past year. Ted Thompson couldn't fire Mike Sherman when he first took over in Green Bay.
