Is Ireland The Most Hated GM / Coach In Dolphins History?

I guarantee you, with Brees we would have won a lot of games and not been going through regime change after regime change. Brees is still playing at a high level, which means he could have been playing here at a high level still.

This is a tough question because they pretty much all suck. I guess I would have to go with Ireland since we were stuck with him the longest and he was a couple of things that a person simply cannot be in this league: he was boring, mediocre and unlikeable.

Dave Wannstedt. Like Ireland he was inept in player personnel. Our history is littered with "what could of been" signings and draft picks. So many missed opportunities. What makes Wannstedt unique, is he inherited a playoff team. In fact, he inherited a team that was probably a few players away from a SB. From there, it was miss after miss. And even when he acquired a great player (Ricky Williams) he then proceeded to fail as a coach and run him into the ground. So even when he was successful in one department, he would fail the back end of it. Sure he had some bad luck (Gadsden injury, Fielder injuries) but what followed those were purely self inflicted wounds (Carter and Ray Lucas).

I don't think anyone has ever failed so thoroughly in Miami Dolphin history. Wannstedt's ability to snatch failure from the jaws of victory was like no other. Ireland deserves every bit of criticism but his failures were limited to one aspect of the team.

This topic has me nostalgic as hell. Thinking back to the late 90's and early 2000's. What I wouldn't give to see that type of talent again. Our defense was a who's who of stardom. Imagine if a real defensive guru actually had control? I think we had more talent on defense than the 2000 ravens, tbh.

One more thing I would like to point out.

What do Eddie Moore and Jamar Fletcher have in common? They were two of the top draft picks by Wanstedt in positions where they were not needed. When Fletcher was drafted Miami had two of the best corners in the league. When Eddie Moore was drafted Miami had pretty good linebackers.

Ireland might have over drafted linemen (Long, Pouncey) or fail in the second round (Thomas) at least he didn't draft mediocre players in positions of strengths when there was a huge need.

You might make an argument for Pat White, however they did have a plan for him and Henne was not that good of a quarterback to not draft another quarterback.

You might argue Dion Jordan, however I would also disagree because Miami needs playmakers on defense.

Thinking about Wanny makes me angry again. I want Ross to hire him just so he can be fired again. People who hate Ireland more just have short memories.

Irlend is a douchbag. He has no personality and doesn't care what you think of him. I wouldn't want to know him or break bread with him. However........He did NOT leave this Team in a bad way . Our Salary cap is better then good and we have some really promising young players. He didn't do that bad a job he was just frustratingly arrogant. This team ran into some really bad luck this season. Bullygate , Keller getting injured. Ireland is to blame for that terrible Oline for sure. But we are not in bad shape. I don't hate him in the least. Rock on......looking forward to the future. Go Dolphins!

Absolutely! Holy S***! some of those draft picks were the worst ever. He almost destroyed Ricky Williams. Who was that 7th round Defensive player taken in the 2nd round that amounted to nothing.........forgot his name......My God.

Lol, have to credit him for being a good person, but man just awful at his job. I remember all my Bear's fan uncles from Chicago teasing me about it when JJ named him coach. He's definitely high on the list for his incompetence. Just think that the nastiness of Saban and Ireland put them above.

Can totally understand the people putting the emphasis purely on job performance though. Nobody enjoys losing.

He traded a first round pick for Rick Mirer and still got a GM title.

Not sure you can say that. Even before his injury his future in SD was iffy. He was only average to above average at that point...hence why they drafted Rivers.

We could have seen the same scenario unfold. Brees needed coaching to become what he is. Would he have gotten that here?

There's a big difference between most hated and worst. Ireland by far is the most hated, just barely beating out Nick Satan. Worst has to be Wannstedt. He took a team that was a perennial playoff team and made us into a laughingstock. As for Ireland his whole being just turns a great many fans off. Had he won games we would have cared less what an ******* he was, but he didn't win enough to overcome his character flaws.

Wanny would be hard to surpass in incompetence. Really hard. He can very much be blamed for running this organization into the ground. Much like he did Chicago.

Sounds like Wanny wins in the worst GM category. Ireland wins in the most hated GM if you include being the worst person.

But some people hate Wanny more that Ireland, even including Irelands personality. These people just hate losing more than they hate *******s.

    This.

Yes, Wannstedt was the worst from a personnel standpoint. He was at least good as a coach though, and spare me the he was the worst coach ever that was behind the times. When he had a talented roster, he averaged 10.25 wins per season, and that was with his poor decision at quarterback. He's still the most successful coach this team has had since the days of Shula, winning 58% of his games.

The difference between Dave and Jeff is that Dave wasn't a scumbag of the third order. He was a great guy. He treated people the way they should be treated. He wasn't abrasive to the players, the media, or the fans. He wasn't a paranoid prick that is only interested in self preservation like Jeff.

So, while Jeff may be slightly better as a personnel guy, he's 100xs worse as a human being. You give me the choice between the two, and I'm going to take Dave Wannstedt because I want to surround myself with good people.

Give me the choice between those two and ill just say "I dont give a crap...we aren't winning either way" then close my eyes, spin around and randomly point at one to choose.

Honestly this will garner a ton of heat, but I cant ****ing stand Don Shula or "the don".....like hes some mobster with a tommy gun. Dude got lucky he played when offensive lineman were 195 pounds soak and wet, then he does nothing from 1973 on besides win a bunch of meaningless games, and waste the majority of the greatest QBs career (who luckily fell into his lap or he wouldve been coaching texas tech by 1990) while jynxing the franchise. You make a great steak Shula, but like with the cooks in your restuarant......you're getting the credit for their work. Ugh. Flame away.

I would put Ireland at the top of my list, because all those others (with the notable exception of Saban) were well-intentioned people who did their best in good faith and failed. Ireland was a thoroughgoing prick who failed.

    Not sure if serious????

Well, I won't flame Sick. But I think you're crazy if you're not being sarcastic. I doubt anybody who lived through Shula's accomplishments feels the way you do about them.

I know you're about 8 years younger than I am, so I'm not sure how much memory you have of Shula in the early to mid 90s. He was a great coach even if he did fail to put some key pieces around Marino. He coached some teams that had offenses like today's football before today's football if that makes any sense. He evolved with the game. And some of us fail to remember what it was like to almost take playoffs for granted every year with a Shula coached team. He wasn't perfect (except in '72), but he is the winningest coach in NFL history. God bless him.

What am I missing? Oh, the comment about meaningless games in 1973? I guess that should be a dead giveaway that you're not so serious.

Anyway, I just wanted to take another opportunity to admit I'm gay for Shula.

He's just lucky Madden didn't coach for 30 years too and instead opted for living eternally (and making a ton of money from royalties) through a video game.

    Where's Shula's video game. :tongue2:

Yes. Not more than Wanny but he's on the list. How is it derailing the thread?! It's a viable question since Parcells brought us a slew of terrible coaches and the guy you, you know- created this thread about. I just find it amusing that he seems to vanish like a ghost around here, and apparently by you too, even though he deservedly should be as loathed as much as Ireland, if not more.
