How important do you feel fitness and offseason conditioning is to winning?

To me, its a big factor. Guys who are in shape can play to their full potential. Guys who arent in shape are slower, weaker and clumsier than the opponent lining up across from them.

I bring this up because I was thinking, if players have said Philbin didn't motivate the team well over the last few games, its highly possible they won't have high offseason motivation either.

Now some of that is on the players themselces and veteran leaders (See Can Wake). But overall, coaches like Belichick and Kelly seem to get players bought into the idea that we need to focus and work hard to maximize our abilities.

In a game of inches a teams conditioning, speed, agility and strength account for points. Heck, even race cars get constant tune ups!

    What do you think?

Well, the offseason sets the tone, both from a fitness and morale perspective. It's the time for not only guys getting on the same page with each other, but with the coaching staff and their agenda. It's also time for building their bodies up to the rigors of the season. Guys who understand that conditioning all year long, no matter the coaching staff or franchise's situation are usually your guys that get thru the season with fewer injuries and can recooperate from week to week in the NFL during the season. Guys who don't usually underperform during the season. That's not to say that all injuries can be eliminated or never happen, but recovery time from the nicks and bumps is shortened...

At this point, I'm sure there are a handful of 'gym rats' that are in and out of the facility or back at their hometown gyms working towards that goal. How many and who they are will go a long way to determining their personal futures..

employees won't just be wary of Philbin. I think with Ross parting ways with Ireland over disagreements and an unknown GM coming into town, players are more likely to be on edge.
Think about if you got a new boss. You'd probably be stricter with yourself till you "felt" them out.

Really good point. The new GM could cut you, trade you, re-sign you and make you rich or not make you an offer at all depending on what he sees once he is there and gets a sense of you.

    Bye John Jerry.

Actually thats unfair. By all accounts Jerry dropped significant weight and kept it off last offseason.

Still, lazy guys better beware. No Sam Montgomery's will be tolerated here I hope.

I would almost think it is similar to normal employee's. I remember reading that there are 3 kinds of employee's. 1) People who have to be monitored and told what to do all the time. 2) People who just need instruction and monitor the results. 3) People who know what they are doing and you just stay out of their way.

dj first person i thought of when i saw thread titlE! Not sure any coach is over looking the weight room there;s to many assistants for that. Motivation we can talk about but not sure it applys to guys taking there craft seriously in the last two weeks. I never saw two game plans meld it was like Sherman outsmarted himself by developing a plan that was different each week instead of using strengths. m2c

Edit also two yrs ago we talked about running a up tempo offense fast. we werent even close. Why if Kelly could run the fastest offense set this yr why not us be close we slowed down . Was it personel or coaching?

It's one of the reasons why the head coach is so important, inspiration from him can make you wanna be great.

I really don't believe NFL owners and GM'S have strict enough curriculum during the offseason for their players..

Being paid these amounts of money it should be written in the contract that it's a full time job, who the fu&$ are they to think anything else..of course you must give the body rest after the season, but when the body is healed the work should be in place for every player on the team..

Being in top condition = enhanced performance= impact on the game=wins..THATS the bottom line!!!.. That's how it is justified..and that's what an owner and fan deserves from you if your getting paid by us..

There really is no excuse for not being at your best when training camp opens..because if your not and your using camp to get in shape you are affecting the efficiency of the practices, and not holding your own relative to the ones that are.. It's BS and stricter rules need to apply..

For me it starts with who I would aquire..the questions would be laid out in the interview, if there wasn't a sense of how important it is to the craft and performance then I simply go in another direction, no more fat asses making money who were born lucky but aren't willing to enhance their tools.

I hate people like that, and I don't want anyone like that to be on our team.

Every physique has the potential to be the best version of itself..only thru serious training and nutrition will you get to that point..in a craft that puts so much emphasis on the body or fitness as you describe it, anything but optimum individual levels, should be considered laziness, disrespectful, and underachieving,

I agree with your comments. I just don't know if Philbin is an inspirational coach. I find him to be very bland. Every time I seen him reading from his notes in the post game comments to his players, I just imagine that the players are tuning him out. It is fine to be even keel for most individuals, but for a head coach, showing some actual emotion on occasion is basically a requirement of the job. I just don't know at this time if the players are motivated by the coaching of Philbin. They certainly didn't appear to being motivated to make the playoffs in their last two games of this past season.

I'm okay with Philbin staying next year, even though I think Ross forcing Philbin on the next GM will mean the top tier GM prospects will probably avoid the Miami GM job. I just think that going into next season, Philbin should be under the same expectations we, (including me) placed on Ireland this year. Make the playoffs next year or else your gone, should be what Ross told Philbin in the meeting they had after this season was over.

That's one of the areas that Chip Kelly was lauded for. I'd imagine that Lazor would bring some of those concepts here should he be hired.

It's everything, and a big reflection of the players mental preparation as well.

Absolutely. Everyone talks about how all the Heat players show up to camp already in playing shape and it's clear they have been taking full care of themselves in the offseason, because nothing less is tolerated. Obviously that is made easier when you are on a great team, but it comes from great leadership at the top (Spo, Riley) and great team leaders who set the bar (Lebron, Wade).

Philbin needs to take a page out of the Heat's book.

This philosophy only apply's to pro athletes who get paid for their bodies to perform at high levels..
