Don't know anything about this guy besides what I'm getting from the YouTube clip. I do have perhaps completely irrational concerns about mining organizations like the Browns for talent for any aspect of the game. Didn't work out so well for Daboll. But Farmer hasn't been there long so maybe he hasn't been corrupted by the mistake by the lake.

I know you didn't mean anything by it. I just always wonder why this becomes an important distinction when discussing African Americans or other minorities. Media does it all the time too. When is the last time you heard someone say "well spoken" when talking about a white guy? Again, I'm sure you're not a racist, and I'm not calling you one. Just one of those accidental things we all do. Like comparing white WRs to other white WRs.

I call white people well spoken all the time. Especially at work when we have new employees and I'm asked to give my opinion.

Nevee thought of the term in a way you're implying. Maybe others do. IDK.

It doesn't mean he isn't good at it, but by saying what he said it makes it SEEM like he isn't ... especially since he was the Director of Pro Personnel, not college scouting. It's as if he was admitting he is not part of the scouting process because he finds it hard, at least that's how it came across to me.

Yes, I agree it happens in a professional setting. But you hear it so much more when referring to black athletes or coaches in professional sports. And it goes both ways. Saying white NFL players have "high motors" or are "smart players".

I don't think it's "racist". Just something I've always taken note of. I've talked about it on here a number of times. It makes people uncomfortable so maybe I should really start leaving it alone. Sorry VT, take no offense please.

Um...to be honest...had nothing to do with him being black.

In my opinion, when you are in a role like General Manager, you need to be able to communicate well. You have to be able to give clear concise answers and directions. You will be a well known face of the franchise, when communicating to the media.

In all honesty...the race thing was something that popped into your mind, not mine. White, Black, red or green....how does he communicate his ideas, beliefs, and thoughts.

And...I refer to all people as to whether they are well spoken or not. I do realize you werent calling me racist, so dont worry about that.

While Ray Farmer's weakness has to be considered his lack of experience with the draft, his strength would have to be team self-assessment, which was a weakness of Jeff Ireland's, IMO.

As a director of pro personnel his job was to constantly monitor his own team's performance week after week, as well as the performance of players around the league. He was key in the process of self-assessment that leads the GM to decide how to go about fielding a complete and fundamentally sound football roster.

That would definitely be beneficial to you, you might actually learn something from an intelligent post, seeing as you based your original post on this thread because he was in the Browns for ONE season.

Would do tons better with Simon Clancy. He's got the British accent so already public relations plus. At least miami would get an excellent kicker from the European football ranks. Suarez anyone?

I like what I have read. I would think the ability to evaluate pro talent can carry over to the college level fairly easily.

Side bar that Wooten guy rubs me wrong. It was "we" everything like he was the one doing the hiring. Narcissist.

His record in evaluating pro talent is??

While he was in KC it wasn't that impressive..

Idk ya know, he seems smart, and looks impressive, but is he a great evaluator of talent, that's all I care about, and at this point we have no record of college personnel, and what we know from free agents in KC isn't great, it seems as though if hired it wouldn't be based primarily in evaluations, and for me that's disappointing..but I will be optimistic until I see differently.

KC has had a lot of talent for a while now actually. I don't know how much he was responsible for, but their roster has never been lacking. They just had poor coaching and QB play.

Well no matter what not everyone is going to be behind the new GM. At one point people liked what they heard about Ireland when Parcells first brought him in. All of these are good candidates but it won't be till a few years till we know how good they are. Just 2 offseasons ago everyone was talking about what a genius Grigson is, then he trades a second for Vontae and a 1st for Richardson...

I believe there were plenty of comments about how well spoken Tannehill sounds when we were checking him out for the first time, and even though he's a very very very light skinned black guy, he's close enough to being white that Blitz's comment shouldn't apply.

Plus Farmer from Duke, and I'm guessing many of those Duke grads sound noticeably well-spoken, even the white ones. Seems like Blitz is just trying to stir stuff up. I guess it's ok for him to comment ad nauseam that the "pasty" Ireland sounds like an idiot to him but apparently you can't comment the opposite about Farmer b/c of his skin color.

Perhaps this would mean adios to Kevin Coyle and a revisit of the 3-4. I wonder if he would air on the side of considering himself a defensive minded GM.

Very true. I know so little about most of these candidates that I'm not going to poo poo any of them until they are on the job for at least a couple of years. And as long as they don't ask any players if their mom's are working girls, they will get a long grace period following Ireland.

Personally based only on what CK and others have written about Gamble, and the fact that a buddy of mine who is an Eagle's fan is terrified of losing him, that's the candidate I'm most excited about.

  38. That was something that jumped out to me also. If he is very good at understanding what the team needss for maximum improvement that could make him a very good GM. It might be a case of him relying on Gaines or whoever he brings in to scout for him, being able to find the players he needs.
