The easy thing to do would be to say: We want to keep Joe on as coach this year and think he deserves a 3rd season. But, after this year, you can decide what to do about the coach.

And, we are giving you a 5 year contract - we really want you to stay for the long-term and run the team but think this is fair for Philbin.

I think that would cover it. But, I doubt they are going to do that.

Basically - they want a personnel director, not a GM, though he'd have that title.

I wouldn't go that far. It's a somewhat neutered position but it's not as if this person is coming to work under Philbin, like in Tampa with Lovie having final say.

This org has had every kind of structure you could want over the last decade and none have worked. Outside of DeCosta there's probably not a candidate out there who deserves the type of power that someone like Parcells was handed. (Not that DeCosta would have left Baltimore for that anyway.) I'm skeptical of Ross and the structure but I think it's kind of overblown to be honest.

as well they should be... I am re-posting a comment made earlier that may be applicable to this thread:

Ireland was a good GM. he was terminated (?) because of political correctness not incompetence. if he were black he'd be back next year. it is what it is...
Brian Gaine will be the likely successor after an exhausted & well publicized examination of minority candidates. nothing else makes sense in the context of justifiably keeping Philbin... McAdoo or Lazar for OC.

would bring Pennington into the franchise as QB coach or in some capacity as an offensive advisor!
I think every fan-base has the team they deserve. absolutely nothing surprises me with Miami.:deadhorse:

I don't know what GM's make as far as salary goes but just for being a CBS studio analyst alone Marino, which is a cush gig, he has a 2 million per year salary from it plus he's got several investments and endorsements like Auto Nation, Papa John's, Maroone, and etc that probably makes him another 3-5 million a year... He's not going to leave his gig. He got it good in CBS. Plus he's boning every CBS intern so yeah. Only action he may get in Davie is from Aponte.

So my wanting Ireland gone was reverse racism since I'm white. Damn I'm such a bigot and I didn't even know!

whiners are not necessarily racists, just annoying...
having said that: if you see no connection between political correctness & the fall of Ireland from favor then my first thought is that you are naive beyond your 23 years. enjoy your youth, it is a fleeting experience.

if Ireland were black he'd be back next year. it's as simple as that...
if all the confusion generated by political correctness in & out of the Miami locker-room were reversed, there would never have been an incident.
if Cam had been white & the GM black, there never would have been the circus that followed, etc. etc.

it is what it is... however, it does get old!
Brian Gaines/McAdoo for 2014 would not surprise me & would probably give us the best chance of pulling this regime together & not trashing another season.

If you want to be more realistic if Ireland was black he would have been fired with Sparano.

well, let's look at it "realistically"
    1) regardless of his color, the hiring of a new GM should have been done with the firing of Sparano & the new GM vested with the power to select his coach, etc.
    2) I think had the GM (Ireland) been black or white, Ross would have made the same decision in keeping him in place & eventually hiring Philbin.
    3) what wouldn't have played out is the horrendous race card the franchise was dealt had the GM been black. what we wouldn't see is this pathetic appeasement & three ring circus unfolding. this all about Ross doing "damage control" having been dealt the unmitigating race card.

I have no dog in this race. all I want to see is an improved franchise & play-off berth in 2014. I don't like hypocrisy or whining. once again we appear to have shot ourselves in the foot, disrupting/altering for political reasons the chances of Philbin has to succeed. should have made a clean sweep of the coach & front office.

as it is, Brian Gaines & McAdoo make sense...

if Ireland were black he'd be back next year. it's as simple as that...

Realistically black coaches and executives get less leeway. He would have been gone with Sparano.

He still would have been fired this year if he was black.

Race card hasn't saved any other coaches and executives.

    2nd paragraph - true.

1st - don't know what else one would call him. The only power he has is over the 53 man roster. That's a glorified personnel director, it seems to me. That's a guy who has final say on player acquisition (via trade, free agency, draft). That's not really a GM.

like I said I have no dog in this race & as many of my fellow posters already know, my family is muti-racial. having said that, I assure you that black coaches & executives do get more leeway (?) consideration & if Jeff Ireland had been a black man, the race card would not have been slammed on the franchise & Ireland's services would have been extended into 2014.
Ross is a businessman, as well as a white man, & knows the trouble that comes with any negatively charged racial event. he is in "damage control" mode... nothing more, nothing less. how this will ultimately impact 2014 remains to be seen.
honest competition is the elixir of success... there is no room for the race card in the 21st. century.

They actually don't. They have the whole, Rooney rule, that gets them more interviews, however once they have the job they are generally yanked faster. Well it has been a few years since I have seen the data, it might have changed. If it has changed then they would be on equal footing.

    1) with the clown, I rest my case. no more need be said, the race card has once again been played.
    2) Dol-Fan Dupree, you know you are one of my favorite posters & I respect your opinion. however, I believe you are very wrong on this account. unfortunately, for me to get into a rational discussion of how, why, who & where would only set me up for the clowns that post our forum.

all I care about is a winning franchise next year & I believe our best chance for immediate success is Brian Gaines & McAdoo or Lazar. only time will tell...

Why? Just because he won't have authority to fire the coach? Most GMs do not have the authority to unilaterally fire the head coach.

Jeff Ireland was fired because Ryan Tannehill was sacked 58 times and as a result is currently nursing a messed up shoulder and knee while wondering how the team had 3 of its worst rushing performances in franchise history in one year. No other reason.

He is Ross' guy. For now. But the bullseye is now on his back, I hope he's ready for it.

  32. Obviously Ross still has faith in him but Ild like to know what gives him faith. Don't get me wrong Im not saying Philbin is the problem. Too many insider things that we are not privy to for me to say that. On the surface though I have not been impressed with what I have seen from him.

The biggest knock I have about him is how he never seems to take ownership. He never takes responsibility when things go wrong. Its always some vanillia answer about how everyone needs to work harder and improve as a team blah blah blah. I have Cam Cameron flash backe when I look at him. He is too passive to lead a team at least that's how it looks in public.

All good points. I am all kinds of confused about what Ross is thinking, I hope he knows what he's doing bc like you said Philbin hasn't exactly shown himself to be the alpha male, much less the the alpha amongst alphas.

7 pts in the last two games. No running game all season. Screens never worked. 3rd and short was damn near impossible for us. Calls 1 deep ball a game with mike Wallace (that number should be in the 3-5 range IMO). Earlier in the year he specifically called plays that left clabo on an island against Mario Williams and Terrell Suggs.

There's no telling who the right guy is, all of these candidates sound good until a few years come by and nothing happens. Even Ireland sounded good at one point when Parcells was hyping him up. My point is they're not going to let this drag on when there are important dates this month as far as scouting goes.
