getting tagged again might just be Grimes' worst nightmare. yes its 11.5 mil, but only for one year which means you have to play well all season AND avoid getting hurt, and by the end of it you'll be 32. Chances of him playing as well as he did this season are slim. (top 3 CB in the nfl) Chances of him staying completely healthy, unfortunately, are also slim.

I actually think Miami, if they're truly willing to threaten him with the Tag (and pay it if they have to) holds all the power in negotiations.

Since when does whats fair have anything to do with it?

Was it fair that Mike Wallace, a bottom ranked WR in 2012, got a 5 year 60 million dollar contract in 2013?? Of course not, he wasn't worth half that.

Fair enough is completely irrelevant. Look at the recent contracts and make your own decision. I already mentioned names like Champ Bailey and Cortland Finnegan. Finnegan's deal was 5 years 50 mil. I'm sure they are looking for that kind of money.

If I were GM, I would probably let him walk. It would depend on what opportunities were available once the free agency period began. The tag wouldn't be out of the question for me, but a 5 year 50 million deal, or even a 4 year 36 mil deal, would be.

I'm keeping in mind players like Nnamdi Asomugha and Asante Samuel. A lot of CB's have had steep declines in their 30's, and it isn't like Grimes is going to convert to safety later on.

It's anything but comedy. It's horribly horribly sad; nevertheless, true as well. According to Football Outsiders, he ranked 77th in 2013, and 79th in 2012. If I remember right,

PFF had him about the same if not worse, right down in the bottom tier of the league. He is a fundamentally unsound football player. I stand by what I said. Wallace's fair contract would have been something less than 5 years 30 million.

    http://www.footballoutsiders.com/stats/wr

Perhaps you should just stick to the blind homerism and leave objective analysis to others.

I believe we have lost Grimes, and all I can say is thank you for giving us a great year and good luck go get your money (last payday) and a ring. I'll be following the remainder of your career.

Solai this run stopping beast - not in 2013 buddy. Again I think we lose him . I would love to sign him but your only as good as your last few games and sorry to say that's average. Having said that his form over the last few years is outstanding. He will demand mega bucks but I'd only pay him above average.

Starks is different, he like Solai has been below par, but I would pay him. Humble guy will test the market get some interest and stay with us. Money will be above what we want to pay him but not blockbuster.

Clemons will test the market and get offered little or no interest he'll be back tail between the legs and accept a Dolphins deal on our terms.

Spend some coin on that o-line and keep Tanny on his feet, get a line that can open up running lanes and become 2 dimensional making teams study film as opposed to "haha we are playing Miami stop that passing game and we win"

Hard to make much out of this post. I saw you want Joel Bitonio in the 5th or 6th. That ship has sailed just as I predicted. He is now becoming a known commodity and he is skyrocketing up boards. He is more realistically a late 2nd or early 3rd round candidate. I would still draft him. I think he could start day one at LG. The kid is brilliant among all his other attributes. He would look great in a Dolphin uni standing next to LT Jared Veldheer.

I fully expect you to kiss my bare *** when the deal is signed after this rediculous post. I'm usually pretty solid on the numbers front. Nailed Reshad Jones contract avg months before it ever happened.

The simple fact is that like last year there are a lot of CB's available on the market as teams are realizing they are able to substitute CB's on a year to year basis. Last year this led to the very top end of deals averaging $6 million a year and on generally short contracts of 3 years. This year alone has Vontae Davis, Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, Chris Harris Jr. (depending on severity of injury), Captain Munnerlyn, Alterraun Verner, Sam Shields, Aqib Talib. All young in their prime CB's out there available. That doesn't include over age 30 veteran CB's still playing well like Drayton Florence, Rashean Mathis, Quentin Jammer and some team will take a risk on Brandon Browner. There are also some intriguing part time players there that might warrant a shot.

Miami also doesn't have another realistic target to put a franchise tag on when you consider the depth/options at DT (ie: sign Soliai OR Starks). So if Miami wants him it doesn't matter what his wife/agent wants. It's either tag....or team friendly deal of about $6.5-7 million a year with about $15-16 million guaranteed. He really doesn't have the leverage at his age and he's openly blown his position by clamoring heavily for a long term deal.

I can't believe you are bragging about agreeing with Jeff Ireland to grossly overpay Reshad Jones. Reshad Jones!! Who ranked near the bottom of league this year amongst starting safeties. His contract is just another of Jeff Ireland's enormous blunders; and you thought that deal was righteous????????????????????????

As for Alterraun Verner, he will probably break the bank. What is he? 25? I would give him the 5 year fifty million before Grimes. I wanted to draft him by half time of the senior bowl he played in.

My best guess is that the rookie GM avoids using the tag and Grimes accepts a 4 year 38 million dollar contract from the Eagles that they can get out of fairly easily in 2016 if they choose. Brent Grimes returns home to his native Philly. Eagles are CB needy and cap rich. If they had a decent secondary this year they may have been playing yesterday.

I think you are severely underestimating the risk of spending 11.3 million on one 31 year old player who isn't a QB.

Actually, I forgot he has been franchised before so his tag is going to be even higher. It will probably be closer to 13 million!!

He is adamant about not wanting to be tagged. He may postpone signing the tender. That is almost always really bad news. Check it out.
    http://www.rotoworld.com/player/nfl/4562/brent-grimes

So as far as your *** goes, you will have to deal with that yourself.

Basic comprehension is a problem for you isn't it? I said I nailed what his contract average was going to be (Also nailed Cameron Wake signing a team friendly extension). Did I say anywhere in it that I agreed with such? FYI Ireland isn't the one who determined the contract. That would be the little lady whose attracting all sorts of attention on this board lately. By the way if one were being objective I'd question why you'd pay Jones that kind of cash and then move him from an in the box free lancing strong safety to a rigid cover safety (Oh right..it's our putrid LB's who can't cover in this system)...but that's for another thread.

Really the money depends on whether the CB $$$ depression of last year continues or not. I think it will be a mix between 2012 and 2013. There will be 2 large deals and neither will have Grimes name on it. Alterraun Verner and Sam Shields. I am not going to argue over what's right etc. I am just pointing out the factors of age, depth of CB's available and the looming franchise tag. But the real key will be whether our new GM wants him or not. If he wants him it'll be tag or team friendly deal. What he gets from other teams is irrevelavant as I'm only arguing what he can make HERE.

I don't know if Philly would be best served for by having Grimes. They got a nice youngin' in Boykin. Their other CB's statiscally aren't giving up huge QB ratings. They might be better served finding more pass rush and taking pressure off of Graham to single him up more. Or they could look to upgrading safety as that looks like much more of a problem.

First of all, why do find it necessary to begin all your posts with a personal insult?? Insecure?? Personality disorder??

Secondly: You were openly bragging about the Reshad Jones deal like you constructed it yourself, and now you are obviously just trying to cover your ***.

Third: Ireland most certainly did make the Jones deal. His responsibility, his decision, his deal. Of course the accountants and lawyers play a part in details, thats why they are on staff, but the deal is on Jeff Ireland. You guys have gone off the deep end in attributing all this power to Dawn Aponte. Listening to some of you guys, you would think she is using some kind of sci-fi mind control to manipulate everybody in the organization.

As far as Philly goes, it's just a guess. He grew up there. They will probably end up wherever Miko wants to go; just probably not Atlanta.

Nobody got paid a lot last year because there weren't any top ranked CB's who happened to hit the market. Actually, Keenan Lewis probably should have asked for more but I hear he was all about going home to the Big Easy. It happens. There aren't good free agent crops at every position every year. Some year's there is a dearth of candidates.
This year there obviously isn't when the 2nd ranked CB in the NFL is an UFA.

Yes yes, of course, you know Wallace's value better than the team who had him for 4 years and offered him $50 million [which is even more than they offered the outstanding Antonio Brown].... and Pitt clearly would've offered even more to keep him if they didn't also have Brown in their midst to fall back on. Yup, you know his value better than the Vikings who offered him $72 million. If there were a $1 raffle held last free agency to have a chance to win Mike Wallace for a 5yr/$50 million contract, a nice chunk of the NFL would've been lined up to get in on it. I always find it amusing when people lay so much credence in stuff like Football Outsiders as a means to assess value. C'est la vie. Yup, he's fundamentally unsound yet his drop rate ranked top 10 among all starting receivers this year at 2.1% IIRC. Meanwhile, for comparison, the "fundamentally sound" Hartline dropped the 4th most passes in the league this year.

    Thanks for the link.

I think we should try to get a 3 year deal with Grimes and try to land the others. But, if push comes to shove and none sign right away, I would franchise Grimes and try to sign one of the DT's at least.

Clemons is up at the top but his numbers are not spectacular. He's a good player and would love to have him back, but even though he's up there among free agents, even his PFF #s are not super high (4.1) relative to some others. I don't see him - at least with his play so far - as an elite guy who has separated himself significantly enough from other safeties in the NFL.

I think he can be replaced.

Oh sorry. Your just usually insulting to everyone you respond to on these forums I assumed that's how you wanted to be talked to, but I guess I forgot to also add dozens of ????'s. As for your 2nd and 3rd points your clearly reading and interpreting what you want to hear. So I could respond to your points but you will yet again move the goal posts cause how dare I mention in responding to a players 'overpay' that it's actually Aponte who sets the $$ value of the deal. No clearly I'm mind controlled

Everything you just wrote about contract offers is BS and you can't prove any of it because it is false and was never anything but rumor.

I don't recall posting anything about Hartline, actually don't recall posting anything about Hartline ever.

Wow!! a good drop ratio for Wallace! Stop the presses, ONE good stat for Mike Wallace.

    Pathetic, just pathetic.

IMO you need to target value guys off this list... good players that won't need to be given the brinks truck.

RB targets... Donald Brown, James Starks, Jonathan Dwyer
    G... Rich Ohmberger
S... Mike Mitchell (really turned it around in Carolina)
    LB... Daryl Smith
    DT... Corey Peters

Sorry, but your phony preface of,oh sorry, doesn't eliminate the fact that you just started another post with a personal attack. Therapy maybe?? or would you rather just go kick your dog or something.

Aponte didn't set the amount. She advised Ireland in the negotiations. That is what capologists and lawyers and accountants do for the GM. Get off the conspiracy theory train.
The deal is Jeff Ireland's deal. If he followed bad advice, that's on him. For all we know, aponte was telling him all along it was a bad deal but he ignored her and told her to work out a deal. Jeff was in charge. Get over it.

As for my responses, you started this banter by calling me naive, and you have continued to attack and insult me from there on out. What do expect? Respect? Can't do it man. Maybe if you were making good points I could acquiesce a little, but the content is lame.

You do realize that the definition of naive is 'simple'. So I basically said you were taking a simple view of the subject. Oh my....I'm such a meanie and totally warranted your behavior afterwards;p

    http://www.thephinsider.com/2013/4/14/4222858/jeff-ireland-dawn-aponte-miami-dolphins-front-office

    http://elitedaily.com/sports/meet-dawn-aponte-possibly-nfls-first-woman-gm/

Everything I have read about her before this whole kerfuffle began was that Ireland chooses the players and Aponte assessed her own value of the player. So if were talking about your comment on 'overpaying' then yes she would apply.

Regardless this was again about money and not over the actual signing of him. Even with the average Aponte is the one who structured it in such a way that it's essentially a 3 year $15 million deal. Which would have been a steal if they hadn't changed his role on defense. Hopefully either Coyle learns to play to Jones strengths or Jones improves and adapts to Coyle's system. One has to budge.

As far as Grimes goes...I stand behind what I said. Once Sam and Verner re-sign before FA the class is going to look a lot like 2013's FA class at CB in actual free agency.

Quoting the phinsider is like quoting the national enquirer, and ya, you added another veiled personal insult by extrapolating on one aspect of the definition of naive. It is what it is, a personal attack. You have a problem dude.

Grimes is going to get his money and there will be no team friendly deal. That is a fairy tale.

Dawn Aponte is not the puppet master. That is a conspiracy theory.

Jeff Ireland is solely responsible for every bad deal made during his watch, just like every other decision maker in the NFL. People who live in the real world understand these things.

    1) It was a Ben Volin quote
    2) This puppet master stuff is from your "own mind". You keep moving the goal posts when your original argument was on the overpay. Your right she's not the puppet master. That's a creation all of your own. She is however the 'purse holder'. She's the one who structured the contract. Who ever comes on board here as GM she'll still structure the contracts players sign.
    3) Grow up and quit whining about insults when you've done nothing but throw around 50 of them based off a perceived slight. Especially when half your posts to everyone on these boards is insulting in the first place. Glass houses. Either way I'm done with it. Will wait and see what happens if Grimes does re-sign here. Until then I'm out of this ridiculous thread.

Aponte is certainly NOT, the, "purse holder," it's Ross's money in the end and Ireland was responsible for how it was spent, not Aponte; which is why he is fired and she remains.

Your continual remarks about the tone of my posts is utterly absurd. Not only are they unfounded but to say such things while writing posts of your own, directed at me personally, filled with vitriol and diatribes, is indicative of a psychosis.

You are the source of your own agitation, not other people. You will never exorcise your demon by lashing out at others you don't agree with; and don't expect them not to retort.

John Kuhn and Greg Jones are both free agents. I'd go ahead and pencil one of those two in for Miami. I believe Joe Philbin will push heavily for this.

Philbin will also be adamant about the issue of getting a left tackle that can protect Ryan Tannehill as well as be interesting in the run game, and he may not be patient enough to wait on a guy to develop out of the draft. Keep a close eye on Anthony Collins out of Cincinnati. I think a LOT of teams will be keeping a close eye on him as well, which is the big problem. Philbin could be so insistent that he doesn't calm down until he gets someone he knows he can trust, like Branden Albert, Eugene Monroe, Jared Veldheer or potentially even Jason Peters via trade.

Philbin will also want to see the tight end position addressed. However, given the market and given the draft class, he may be assuaged into believing the new GM can deliver on this position via the draft. He will be in love with all three of the top guys in this draft at that position, Eric Ebron, Jace Amaro and Troy Niklas.

The Dolphins will also go for a tailback, perhaps even in free agency. It might be Ben Tate. It could be Rashad Jennings.

The Dolphins WILL run the football in 2014.

I would certainly look into it as well, IF the Eagles were for some reason willing to part ways.

But don't expect that to come cheap. They're pretty happy with themselves for being able to uncover him in the 7th round. And I don't think they're going to be satisfied churning him out after only having gotten like 900 yards and 6 TDs out of him in two years. He's way too sparkly of a diamond to be satisfied with just that.

They also like Chris Polk. As they should. He's a violent runner. He's certainly better than I thought he'd be coming out of college. That might actually be the guy to feel the Eagles out on because they'll try and rake you over the coals if you want Bryce Brown. They love Polk, but he's not Bryce Brown. They don't need to see a Chris Polk rush for 1200 yards in a season for them in order to say OK we got what we wanted out of him.

Much as when they traded Dion Lewis to the Browns for Emmanuel Acho, they can't help but churn and try and monetize some of the gems they uncovered because they want to keep sifting through and finding new ones. You can't find new ones without getting rid of old ones so that the new guys have the opportunity to impress.

So as I said maybe give them a call about Chris Polk. I wouldn't be shocked to hear his price tag was affordable.

Are you saying Gary Kubiak will be the new OC?

I think there is a far better chance of Veldheer making it to market than most think.

If something happens at TE, which guy is out? or do they keep 4 TE's.

I want to take a flier on WR Danario Alexander. The surgeons are doing some amazing stuff these days. If he got stem cell injections in his knees he may actually return to 100% health. His price tag should be good and low. He is a legitimate deep threat and red zone target the likes of we have not seen here in a long time.

In fact, I find myself wanting to acquire a lot of injured guys this offseason.

I think FB Trey Millard from Oklahoma is going to be a steal in the 6th or 7th round. He may not be ready for camp but I don't care if he starts on the PUP or spends a year on IR.

I think we may end up having to draft a OT. Hurst broke his leg and could be a bargain in the late 2nd or 3rd round.

Perry Simmons from Duke blew out his knee just when he was starting to get a little attention. He would be an excellent rookie free agent IMO.

More than anything, I would like to see Charles Tillman signed to a 3-4 year deal to convert and play FS for us. When was the last time a Dolphins team had true turnover machine making plays. Peanut has said publicly he isn't done playing and understands he may have to play somewhere else besides Chicago. He is coming off IR as well.

I usually am pretty turned off by guys coming off injury, but not this year.

Do you really believe Rashad Jennings will get to market?

Didn't fumble a single time this year, to my knowledge. Unless you count one in the preseason.

Whole thing might be a bit overblown. He went thru a bad spell in 2012 for sure but if you add up all his touches from 2012 and 2013, including the preseason, we're talking a fumble every 45 touches which I believe is somewhat in line with the average of some wildly successful pros like Ricky Williams and such. I can accept a fumble every 45 touches on a 2nd year guy whose last 114 touches in his 2nd year saw just 1 fumble.

Moot point. The Eagles will bend over whoever tries to trade for him.

You're very confident about that. Mind sharing why you feel that way?

The fumble issues with Bryce Brown are overstated.

From preseason to regular season he touched the football 114 times and had one fumble in 2013.

Yes he had 4 fumbles during the 2012 regular season and 1 fumble during the preseason. But I think sometimes you do make allowances for a rookie going through a bad stretch. And that's what he went through, a stretch where he fumbled 3 times in 2 games.

Lord almighty we've already concluded a guy's career based on 3 carries over a two-game span in his rookie season.

We were ranked 28th in rushing attempts last season. I'm certain Joe Philbin wants to improve that.

Fair enough. Just hadn't heard anything good or bad about him since that stretch last year.

I had read previously that Philbin didn't care about running the ball, and that he had argued with Mike Sherman over it. If anything, I am afraid that we will hire McAdoo and run out there 4-5 wide all the time.

I thought they argued over not being a balanced team.

It depends on the personnel and the strengths/weaknesses of the team.

The Dolphins were weak at tight end, especially tight end blocking, and had no fullback, and so they had to be a 3-WR or even 4-WR team. Those aren't good running teams. It could be that Philbin just doesn't really believe in playing charades. If you're not a strong running team there's not much use trying to pretend you are.

I believe Philbin will want to see renewed strength in the TE and FB positions as well as the OTs. That will lead inevitably IMO back to a commitment to run the football.
