Ultimately what I think happened in the Long situation was that he was offered a similar 4/36 deal that he got from the Rams but with little or no guaranteed money.

These athletes consider guaranteed money as being synonymous with respect so when Jackie Long says it wasn't about the money she's partly correct.

too many young players wouldn't be a problem if they were actually good

hence my reference of Seattle in the opening post if we were actually operating on that level.

    A) why does it have to be a "huge pay day"? If money is the prime catalyst to the level you suggest, then more money is still more money, no? It doesn't have to specifically be from a "huge contract".

    B) I'm not sure what you're trying to suggest with this comment. Nevertheless I can list a handful of players in Seattle & San Fran alone who re-signed or extended for agreeable amounts rather than milking the bank in FA.

How 'bout Cam Wake? What's his excuse after proving himself one of the best pass rushers in the league? You think he wouldn't have gotten more than $34 million in free agency?

Who cares how good the cap situation is if it means that this team hasn't had a winning season in the past five years. I have to think Raven fans weren't complaining about the cap hell their team was in after the 2012 season. Especially after winning the SB last year.

Being millions under the cap and not making the playoffs or even having a winning season, merely shows how inept this organization is at at signing and drafting players who are worth the money they are paying them. Also having a very mediocre coaching staff certainly doesn't help when it comes to developing the young players on their roster.

You have to have a good mix, but really having vets isn't enough. You have to have leaders that command the respect of the younger players.

I know most of you being Heat fans won't like this example but, The Indiana Pacers are the perfect example. They have a young team with David West as the leader on the floor. He brings a whole team first attitude and the younger players buy in. Then our other vet is Larry Bird. The president holds these guys accountable, so much he called them soft playing the Heat a couple years ago. He finds players that match the team first mentality of this team. All that with a first time head coach.

It's all about chemistry, but it has to be across the board from top to bottom.
