I don't think Henne and Gabbert were getting killed as much as Tanne this past season.

They should make him a coach/player. Don't care that he's 60, he'd still be better than Wheeler.

For those who have forgotten (I did as well), Duffner was very WIDELY speculated to be joining Joe Philbin during the original filling out of the staff.

The rumors persisted even when it came to light that Duffner had signed a contract extension with the Jaguars on January 16, 2012. That was about 4 days prior to Joe Philbin being hired in Miami. It was hard to tell whether the rumors had any basis or if it was just speculation based on previous association.

I guess we just got the answer to that question. There was smoke, and there was fire. Duffner PROBABLY tried to get out of his contract to come to the Dolphins but was denied.

I don't know overly much about Duffner except that in 2012 I put together a list of the top 5 teams at each position by PFF grade, and then put down the position coach that coached them. Duffner was on that list because Paul Posluszny (a castoff from Buffalo), Daryl Smith and Russell Allen all had excellent grades. They let Daryl Smith go in 2012 and the unit took a big step backward. It hasn't recovered.

    Biography
A veteran of 38 years in coaching, Mark Duffner has served the past seven seasons as the linebackers coach for the Jacksonville Jaguars. Duffner joined the Jacksonville staff in 2006 following three seasons in the same capacity for the Green Bay Packers. Duffner just completed his 16th season of coaching in the NFL, and he previously served 22 years coaching on the college level including 11 seasons as a head coach.

Duffner was tasked with teaching two new starting linebackers for the Jaguars in 2012, with two of the previous year’s starters missing, and the results were impressive. Russell Allen was groomed as a first-time full-time starter alongside veteran Paul Posluszny, and Kyle Bosworth and rookie Julian Stanford combined for 11 starts opposite Allen. Posluszny broke the franchise single-season record with a career-high 231 tackles, adding three interceptions and two sacks, and Allen posted a career-best 201 tackles while starting all 16 games for the first time. It marked the first time in Jaguars history that two players made 200 or more tackles, and to date three of the franchise’s top four seasons in terms of individual tackles were made by Duffner-coached linebackers. Daryl Smith, the team’s all-time leading tackler, played in only the final two games of the 2012 season because of injury.

While with the Packers, Duffner helped develop 2003 first-round draft pick Nick Barnett. Green Bay's defense finished the 2005 season as the seventh-ranked defense in the NFL (1st against the pass) and Barnett set the team record with 194 tackles and became the first Packer to lead the team in tackles for three consecutive seasons. In 2004 the Packers defense led the NFL in red zone defense, allowing only five conversions in 21 third-down attempts.

Duffner entered the NFL coaching ranks with the Cincinnati Bengals, where he spent six seasons as linebackers coach (1997-2000) and defensive coordinator (2001-02). In 2001 the Bengals defense allowed the unit’s fewest points since 1989 and fewest yards per game since 1983. In addition, the defense set a franchise single-season record for sacks that year with 48.

Prior to joining the Bengals staff, Duffner was head coach at the University of Maryland from 1992-96. He posted a 20-35 overall record that included an 11-11 mark over his final two seasons, the school's best two-season record since 1984-85. Duffner helped the Terps achieve their first national ranking in nine years when the club ranked as high as No. 17 in 1995. In addition to the success on the field, Duffner improved Maryland's player graduation rate, with three classes in a row ranking among the nation's best (1994-96).

Duffner also served as head coach at The College of Holy Cross (1986-91) where he compiled a 60-5-1 mark that included two 11-0 seasons (1987, 1991) during his six years. He was named national coach of the year five times while at Holy Cross and 'New England Coach of the Year' five times, and his 1987 Holy Cross team was ranked No. 1 in the nation in Division I-AA by the Associated Press. Duffner initially served as defensive coordinator at the school from 1981-1985. He was inducted into the College of the Holy Cross Athletic Hall of Fame in May of 2008.

Duffner's coaching career began as a graduate assistant under Woody Hayes at Ohio State (1975-76) where he earned a master’s degree before serving as defensive coordinator at the University of Cincinnati (1977-80).

Duffner played defensive line at William & Mary (1972-74) and was later inducted into the school's Hall of Fame in 1990. He and his wife, Kathy, have three children, daughters Christina and Carolyn and son John.

COACHING BACKGROUND: Ohio State 1975-76, Cincinnati 1977-80, Holy Cross, 1981-91 (head coach 1986-91), Maryland (head coach) 1992-96, Cincinnati Bengals 1997-2002, Green Bay Packers 2003-05, Jacksonville Jaguars 2006-13.

It's very much still an incestual, good ole boys hire. Duffner was the defensive coordinator at Holy Cross, and he appeared to have brought in Kevin Coyle to be an assistant. When he became head coach, he promoted Coyle to DC. He inherited Mike Sherman as an OL coach, and then later promoted him to offensive coordinator.

When Duffner was promoted to DC in Cincinnati, Coyle was hired to be a defensive back coach. When LeBeau and his staff was blown out, Mike Sherman hired him to be his linebackers coach.

Not that he's necessarily a bad coach, but all in all it's the same kind of deal.

I get the negatives that can sometimes come with hiring a person you know as a charity handout vs getting the best guy for the job. But it isn't ways the case. If you've worked with the guy before and know first hand that he's damn good at what he does... and that you're familiar with each other from a communication stand point... whether they knew the person prior or not may not matter in regards to whether it was a good hire.

We'll have to wait and see. I know nothing of him...

An underwhelming but not surprising hire .As the recent Barry Jackson article has pointed out ,Philbin has given more importance to hiring cronnies over NFL experience and performance.

This is just another example IMO.The whole coaching staff is a very unimpressive lot .

    I don't understand this complaint.

Duffner is very qualified. He has been a successful LBs coach in the past. Should Philbin only hire coaches he's never worked with? He hired Lazor to be his OC which is a significantly bigger deal than a LB coach.

How has this thread gone on so long thus far without one Duff Beer reference. If he gets Ellerbe and Wheeler to play better, that's certainly Duff-worthy.

Complaining about this hire is just complaining for the sake of complaining, you complainers.

Most of us have never heard of him. I'd bet 95% of you couldn't name 3 LB coaches in the NFL anyway (I couldn't)

The guy obviously has been around a while and has experience. I have no issue with this hire.

In all fairness the guy does have plenty of NFL experience (16 years), more than anyone else on his staff. And you probably don't last 16 years in the NFL if you aren't at least capable at what you do.

INCESTUAL??? That was the best word you could come up with? :headwall:

    1. Sexual relations between persons who are so closely related that their marriage is illegal or forbidden by custom.
    2. The statutory crime of sexual relations with such a near relative.

Duffner has plenty of NFL experience. As for his performance as a LB coach, everyone can form their own subjective, yet worthless opinion.

If Philbin was unwilling to intervene to correct the issues with Mike Sherman because of his relationship with him, it's exactly this.

I'm not implying they are related and having sex.

You work w/ people, you admire the work they do, when you have a need you look at them as potentially fulfilling that need? It's pretty much what makes the world go 'round, and not just in Miami.

You realize Philbin probably knows most NFL guys in some capacity right? He's been around the block a few times.

If you don't like the hire why don't you tell us why from the standpoint of the qualifications of the man in question. Except you can't because he has a good history.
