    excellent post

We could argue for days all the intricate facets of a successful franchise.

We have been lame for so long that it is hard to get past it. Most don't even remember what it looks like or what it feels like. Parity becomes the norm. I have seen posts on here where a lot of people would have been happy winning just a playoff game or just making the playoffs.

The goal of NFL football is to win the super-bowl; not be competitive, not win the division. Don't get me wrong there is nothing wrong with achieving those goals.

The point I am trying to make is these folks have been mentally reduced to accepting that as the goal. They have been reduced from super-bowl to division title. Partially because we are always just satisfied with being better then last year. Beat down year after year by disappointment and aggravation. You can't help it because your brain wants to "feel good" so you lower your standards to try and get there. It becomes the norm and gets into the very fabric of the franchise. This is the state of the Miami Dolphins.

Sorry, but you just can't grasp a simple concept- Huizenga parted ways with Shula, Shula was forced out in favor of Jimmy Johnson, and to avoid Shula being even more humiliated he was allowed to retire, resign, whatever you want to call it. It's like putting lipstick on a pig, and you're focused on the lipstick and in denial of the pig lurking underneath. Shula was dismissed- for whatever reason you choose to focus on the fact that he was dismissed in a more humane way, without the added humiliation of being fired. Having followed the whole scene intently down here in sofla, there was no question as to what was going on. Sorry dude, you're the one twisitng the facts, and more importantly whiffing on the bigger picture.

He was NOT given the option to stay on as GM though. You are acting as if Ross offered to keep him around in the exact same capacity. He didn't. He offered him a power demotion.

It's important not to rush the process when your talking about hiring a very important component to a billion dollar franchise..take your time and get it right..do the research needed, compare, re interview.

Fired / let go / asked tell resign. Whatever dude. They are the past and the past is a different country. We are exactly where most people predicted we'd be at the end of the season so I don't see this as a trainwreck. We are what we are. Middling. We've middling talent in some areas. Above in some. Under in others. The perception of the media and some of the fans didn't alter our season one bit. The idea that our team is cursed or the worst of the worst is just wrong.
Jim, you mentioned Jake long. What other teams came in for Jake long? The dolphins offered a decent deal but declined to over pay. St louis offered a deal. Jake made a decision to go elsewhere. Should we have tried harder to keep him? I dunno, I'm no doctor but I'm sure someone decided he was an injury risk. We didn't exactly seem to push very hard. Jake chose someone else. In the same way Wallace chose us over others. Players go where they get paid. Our image is irrelevant.

Miami wanted to up the offer and Jake Long, while he was in south Florida, declined to even meet with the team and entertain the Dolphins increased offer. Make no mistake, the Dolphins wanted to retain Jake Long. The question is why did he have such little interest in re-signing here, not even giving the Dolphins a chance to increase their offer- he wanted out. My guess is that his distaste for Philbin and Ireland had a lot to do with it.

That's because the perception of Jake Long was that he was not appreciated and not really wanted here.

You know the perception that doesn't mean anything.

Ah now 2socks what you've done there is taken two separate conversations and tried to merge them for your own end. I perceive this to be a pointless exercise. We have contradictory points of view. We won't change each other's minds so let's just leave it at that.

Who's perception? My perception is that after his first 2 or 3 years his career was on a Hall of Fame trajectory. He was a rock for us at LT until the injuries got the best of him, then he had a great year for the Rams until he tore his ACL. I definitely wanted him back- the results speak for themselves when Long was replaced by Martin at LT, even before all of the craziness took place.

In hindsite how nice it would have been if we got Cordy Glenn with that Martin 2nd rd pick, 1 pick sooner by the Bills. Regardless, losing Jake Long in FA was a huge loss, the OL never recovered.

Oh, yes, indeed! And, hey, while were at it, just to be doubly, extra diligent, let's leave the country for two weeks on other business! Right. In. The. Middle. Of. The. Hiring. Process!

Yeah, great job. Ross is such a phenomenally diligent and insightful owner of the team! All about 'putting the Dolphins first!' It's just that kind of spectacular dedication to the team that keeps those turnstiles rotating by fans!

Yeah, boy, Ross. Great, great job, DR. "Mr. Dolphin!"

As sad as it is, this is true. We are no longer a premiere franchise. We're a joke. Dolphin fan for life but let's be real here. I'd throw the Bengals in there. And the Browns and Raiders are far below us. We're not on that level. But we're notches below the premiere franchises for sure

Long's perception. I wanted him back too. Definitely was a huge loss, and we will not recover from it next year either.

Pointless exercise that Jake Long felt like we didn't respect or really want his services? That we Ireland, Aponte and Philbin were just jerking his chain. It's exactly why he walked. Whether right or wrong that was his perception. Because his perception was everything on that day this team lost one of the best Tackles in football. Thank you Jeff Ireland and Shame on Joe Philbin for not interjecting. Could be maybe Philbin felt he didn't keep his mouth shut. might have been to vocal....not sure

  15. That leg work should of been done months ago. Its not as if this was a sudden decision that caught ross by surprise

he even said as much that it did. Had we beaten the jets and gone into the playoffs, he wouldn't have fired anybody.

  17. That is a crap answer by Ross. What was he thinking during the losing slump they had mid season? At the very least he should of started of looking at potential replacements back then just in case it did not look like things were going to turn around.

They probably did look at replacements but couldn't interview them till their teams' seasons were over.

  19. I get that part but as soon as they decided to officially fire Ireland they should of had a list of names of who they were going to target and what the offer is to each candidate. If Ross was not prepared to do that than he is a lousy owner. That's all I am saying and I will also add in his defense he has had a decent list of people to interview.

Why is there an assumption that didn't happen? Teams are still playing. They're probably waiting on guys that were either in the championship games and/or possibly there are candidates that wanted to wait until after the Senior/Super Bowls. We don't know, but to just assume they had no plan is silly.

I'm adding sarcasm to it. But, the reality is,
    1. Ross is going to be in meetings in those places not focused on the Dolphins process.
    2. The time difference is a barrier. Your grannies don't live in China do they?
    3. Video-conferences can be useful but in this case - is that how you want the owner to decide on a guy?
    4. Conducting face-to-face interviews is an important factor in all this - at least at some level if Ross is expecting to interact with the team.
    5. Ross is not likely to do much of that - if any - it appears the interview process is being put off til he returns, so your observation is apparently moot at this point.

Because I'm NOT a fair-weather fan. I've been a DolFan longer than most of the people that post on this board have been alive. I have sweated in the hot sun, sat in the pouring rain, and had my heart broken too many times to count, and because I am a LOYAL FINZ4LIFE fan I am here and remain here.

I will never leave the Dolphins, but God knows they have left me many, many times.

I do not approve of Ross' ownership style, and I will continue to complain about it. That is what this board is here for. It's not just for "lollipop and sunshine" blind homers to come on here and cheer and pat themselves on the back for being "true fans" and turning a blind eye to the dysfunctional and asinine stupidity we see coming from the Davie HQ's. It's for all fans to come here and give their opinions as long as they stay within the board rules.

If you can't cope with that, go start the "Miami Dolphins Blind Homers Idiot Message Board", or stay and STFU about those who have the right to, and DO state their opinion which might be contrary to what you want to hear.
