Dolphins made a late run at Licht before Bucs hired him

The Dolphins are proceeding deliberately in their search for a General Manager, but apparently went into hurry up mode for a moment.

According to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network, the Dolphins “made a late attempt to hire” new Buccaneers G.M. Jason Licht once they found out about Tampa Bay’s interest.

If true, it adds another embarrassing layer to a process which has reportedly turned off a number of prospective candidates.

I happen to know that Licht was not going to choose the Dolphins. I assume he only kept his name in the running for the sake of raising his league profile and/or not burning bridges, but he was not high on the opportunity.

So, if true, we had a first chocie, but instead of just hiring him, we sit around for days just assuming that Tampa is not interested?

Or did he simply become the top choice once somebody else got interested?

What makes me uncomfortable about this story (if it's true) is that it really feels like we were trying to outbid the Buccs for his services. If you're on a bidding war, you might as well not hire that person. You want a guy that wants this job, not trying to lure him with money. But that's been the Huizhenga/Ross way, always trying to show off their money.

Or how about you offer the job before the Bucs do?

And most people take a job for the money. Doesn't mean they don't want to be there. People kill to have two companies vying for their services

Given the drama and turmoil surrounding the Dolphins FO I'm not surprised at all that Licht preferred the Bucs job. Stuck with Philbin as head coach, Aponte lurking in the shadows consolidating power, who needs it if other options are there for the taking.

The only part of this genuinely verifiable as true is that philbin is head coach. The rest you've decided is fact. I thus challenge you to prove that Aponte is lurking in the shadows consolidating power. I challenge you to prove we are in turmoil.

That's the idealist way of looking at it, but the reality is that if the jobs were fairly even, which indications were, then the money is going to be the deciding factor. IF true and IF they wanted Licht, then they either dilly-dallied too long or underestimated interest in him. Either way, I'm still on the Ray Farmer band wagon, but most of the candidates we've interviewed are capable individuals.

Harbaugh didn't chase the money - Ross was ready to offer him more money than the 49ers who have cheap owners, Jeff Fisher - "we won't be outbid" - Ross, he didn't chase the money. Our auction ways the past 2 decades have resulted to NOTHING.

We should have offered Licht day 1 and been done with it. And, give him a 5 year deal. Assure him he's there for the long haul.

Also ironic that Licht does not have final say on the draft/personnel acquisition at Tampa Bay but would have had that here. That really says a lot about what he (and likely other GM candidates) think about the utterly dysfunctional situation in Miami.

    And there's this:

We are just rockin'-and-rollin' this off-season, aren't we?

I mean, Ross is all over this thing to make the Dolphins a premier team - he's even searching Europe and China for a GM!!!

Now that a senile Al Davis has passed on, Ross is rapidly becoming the most embarrassing owner in the NFL.

    Such a complete shame.

There is so much crap flying around right now, that it's difficult to discern the probable from the 'made-up' stuff as to Ross' intentions and who he really likes/doesn't like/won't come here because of the perceived turmoil/disgruntled info being passed along by Mando, Beasley, LaCanfora, etc....the truth is that we don't KNOW anything about why this guy or that guy didn't want the job or why this guy took this job instead of our job, etc... I can't believe just about anything I read on national sites, since they are just repeating what the local-yokels are bantering about...

I challenge you to put on your thinking cap and realize that this is obviously my opinion based upon what I've seen and read down here, none of us know exactly what is going on behind the closed doors of the Dolphins FO. If verification is so critical to you as per a Dolphins fan website, I would challenge you to prove that there is NOT turmoil in the Dolphins front office. Good luck with that one.

What sense does that make? Gaines supposedly is one of the people being interviewed/considered for the position. Lets say he is for the sake of your argument he is scouting or has his people scouting, but isnt picked as the GM and moves onto another team. Wouldn't he know Miami's intentions at that point? I would hope that the team would shut him out until they can figure out who the GM will be and as well if said GM will keep Gaines on in his current capacity....

Because you repeat it every time as if it's fact and not opinion. By turmoil what do you mean? A state of great confusion and disruption. All that is happening is we are looking for a GM. That's not turmoil. That's business. I'm not searching for verification from Thephins. I'm just narked at the idea being peddled that we are some basket case. Imho it's not in any way true.

As an aside, I couldn't pick a horse in this race because I have no concept of their abilities to do their job. That's the head hunters job to find out. For me, I'd like xanders, best sounding name.

Dude, Ross has a personal net worth of almost five billion dollars. That's billion with a "B;" meaning almost five thousand millions. He doesn't need to show off anything. Everyone in football knows. I picture him in a Dolphins jersey with a dollar sign on it instead of a number. Everyone knows he can buy anything he wants and outbid anyone.

The thing with Licht joining the Bucs and not coming here could be the perception of job security and empowerment that comes with the job here; or to be exact, the lack of both. Could be. We don't really know (except CK might, but he's not telling) why Licht chose the Bucs over us.

Maybe the more solid reports, or facts if you will, that he took the Bucs job should tell you something. I'm not sure why people think that inside sources would willingly divulge their identities when commenting on touchy and controversial subjects like the Dolphins GM search and reported inner office turmoil.

The central question is, why did he want the Bucs GM position more than the Dolphins GM position? Something to think about.

He would have less say on personnel with the Bucs, where they gave Lovie Smith final say, and still have to deal with a coach he didn't pick in Lovie Smith, and be stuck with that coach for longer, as Lovie Smith was just hired, as opposed to Philbin who will be on the hot seat. The only potential issue that is even viable is that he doesn't like the Aponte situation? Is he really that put off by a capologist? Seems more likely we just didn't want him as much as the Bucs did. Maybe we offerered a second interview late in the process and at that point the Bucs had already made their bid.

Maybe they wanted him more then us? I don't know how anyone can draw any conclusions, except maybe CK, because he happens to have access to that info. All we can do is..listen to the various media reports, weigh the evidence presented along with the credibility of the messenger, and go from there.

Inherently, Im one to be optimistic about the future of our franchise. So...when I read negative things, I am much more reluctant to just assume its true, because thats not in my nature. Obviously, your different. Doesnt make it wrong...doesnt make me right. The fact is....we cant know. The Phins have really held their cards close to the vest. But being a Billionaire, you gotta imagine, Ross can buy access to information we can only dream about. Its his team. All we can do is watch as it all plays out. And try not to kill each other in the process.

It's like I said in the Club. Carl Peterson probably reached out to Licht to inform him he intends to make him a finalist for 2nd interview, asking him to put off accepting the Tampa job until Ross could get back and they could make a decision.

Of course Licht and his people are going to interpret that as the Dolphins offering him the job, which isn't really true, but they are the ones that likely spoke to Rapoport so that was the story.

That's likely why yesterday morning Carl Peterson's name was specifically attached to the rumor of Licht being in the top two.

As for Armando's declaration that Steve Ross never left the country this week, I'm trying to find out who told me this but SOMEONE said either here or on twitter that the flight plan that Ross filed to Alaska (which is a connecting point to the far east) was cancelled on account of weather.

So what probably happened is the flight got cancelled and Ross, seeing things happen so quickly with Licht yesterday and the egg on Miami's face as a result, decided not to re-schedule that flight, forego his trip to China and make a decision on a GM earlier than he wanted.

Of course he won't tell those details to a guy like Armando, he'll just have Armando inform people very matter of factly that Ross never left the country...for effect.

Pins and needles here. Hope we get a solid GM (as well all do).

Makes a lot of sense to tell him, "Hey, we like you and you are a finalist," but that's not the same as a job offer. He took the bird in the hand. For all we know he really hit it off w/ Lovie.

We get the tiniest nugget of truth, and immediately people begin to fill it with their own perception and cognitive bias. This should be a lesson for all of us that follow twitter accounts, and thirst for Dolphin News. Sadly, the soap opera will continue.

I don't want you to take this the wrong way, but don't you get tired of assuming the worse with this organization. That is not to say the organization doesn't merit that reputation. And in a way I am saying they keep supplying the ammo. But there comes a point in the psyche of a fan where you got to hold on to something as a fan to keep supporting this ship. What keeps you supporting this ship, or do you consider yourself a media guy who doesn't hold any particular loyalties, much like a guy like Omar? I believe you are both media and a fan. Am I wrong? (This is not a slight, complaint, or piece of sarcasm. Just observation of longsuffering).
