The team just went 9-7 last season, and is in much better financial position. JJ left the roster with talent for sure, but he left Dave Wannstedt in charge, with nobody to actually evaluate Dave Wannstedt.

Yup JJ's history is immediately destroyed by the fact that Wanny was his hand picked replacement. The start of 15 years of spiraling.

Which team went 9-7? I certainly do not agree the team is in a better financial position now than when JJ was in charge. We have over $20 mil in guaranteed annual salary payable this coming season to Wallace, Wheeler and Ellerbe alone.
The 4 years under JJ was much better than any 4 consecutive years since. Simple fact.

One of the biggest mistakes Huizenga made was begging Jimmy to come back for his final year when he wanted to quit. Jimmy agreed to stay because Wayne let him bring in Wannstedt as his de facto successor. If Wayne would have just let him retire, we might've dodged the Wanny bullet. I remember reading reports at the time that the players wanted Westhoff as JJ's successor.

I don't understand this statement. The last thing the team should be doing is prioritizing Aponte over the guy responsible for creating a winning team. She might do a good job, but so could a lot of number's people when the GM's goal is to create and operate with a healthy cap, and her ability to negotiate a contract isn't going to make or break this team, and I'm sure there are other qualified individuals capable of handling those duties as well. She could be the best administrative exec in the league but that doesn't guarantee success on the field. Can't say the same about a top GM. If it's between Aponte and a promising GM, Aponte can go get f***ed.

Big deal. She has nothing to do with the football side of the game which just happens to have the greatest impact on winning and involves the greatest level of difficulty since the decision making involved is highly subjective and abstract. For the most part she works with numbers and negotiates contracts, which is much more straight forward, and as such, there are plenty of attorneys and numbers people capable of sufficiently performing those duties under a qualified GM who advocates a healthy cap. You act like she's an Abel Prize winner or something.

That was really a Huizenga issue though.

Had we simple allowed JJ to retire like he wanted, or not beg him back with assurances Wanny would be given the job, we probably could've hired Marty Schottenheimer.

How is Dawn Aponte one of the most qualified executives in the league? She knows **** all about football.

Because not every executive in the NFL...is part of the personel evaluation team. She understands how to massage and work with a cap. You cant knock the job she has done. I mean..if you equated her job as how well a GM does in the draft..shes NAILED this last few seasons. Shes why we have the cap room we do this season...after spending a ton last season. Remember...you can kill a team financially just as quickly as making poor talent decisions.

Problem is this is the second time she's stabbed a GM in the back, she pulled the same crap in Cleveland and word trickles out quickly in this league.

Well snips... everyone in the business ( owners aside ) grew up playing, loving the game. This is a female accountant. I think it's somewhat safe to assume she isn't a " football mind " .... Whether she enjoys the game or not.

The more pertinent question is- What on god's green earth leaves you to believe Aponte does know something about football when she's never played or coached the game and has never worked on the football side of operations?

In this case, let's give him credit for not calling the guy "boy"...

This guy can't sell this team fast enough.

I guess this is the karma we get for having a dude like Mickey Arison in town. For every Mickey Arison, you get a Jeffry Loria & Stephen Ross apparently.

Ditto. If you're even remotely considering making this lady a football evaluation/acquisition person, then you might as well just make Sandra Bullock or Cameron Diaz GM. They're ladies too.

I'm not claiming she should be a gm or scout but claiming she knows nothing, which I see way too often on here, is just stupid. It's football, not brain surgery. I've never played or coached hockey, but I certainly get it. If my job of several years, 24/7 revolved around it, I'd probably consider myself pretty well informed on it.

Yes, such a good job. She negotiated the contacts that have us paying Ellerbe, Wheeler, and Wallace a combined $26 mil in guaranteed base salaries in 2014. So we got that going for us. Which is nice.

Seriously pappy. She plays with numbers and negotiates player contracts, yet people act like this is Chinese arithmetic and the attempted buyout of a billion dollar company.

There are more than enough qualified individuals capable of performing those duties. The most important part of it is having an owner and/or GM who choose to operate within a healthy cap and desire to avoid heavily selling out the future for the present. Put Aponte under Dan Snyder the past 10 years and she'd probably look like one of the worst capologists in the league. Conversely, put her with Ireland who had a plan when he took over in 2011 to create a great cap situation in order to make a big FA splash in 2013 and she'll look like a genius.

Which makes them really easy to get rid of in 2015 if they do not work out. Instead of them hurting the cap for 3 to 5 years.

Yes, I've at least played football... and have spent hundreds of hours watching games, film, and studying players, etc...... but I'm also not employed by the Dolphins nor looking to gain greater power within the organization which might be scaring off quality GM candidates, so I'm not sure your point. But feel free to answer my initial question if you like.

Well, I think most people would find it hard to believe that a person who spent years working for football organizations in a football league does not know a thing about football.

I read somewhere that is an interviewing tactic where the prospective employee intentionally says the name wrong to gauge the reaction. Maybe that was what Ross was doing. If a person was so thin skinned that they got their panties in a wad over something so trivial, maybe they don't have the moxie to be a good GM out on the front line of the NFL battles. :)

So, you would turn down $1 mill a year because they called you Delores instead of Mulva in your interview?

Why would I want to work somewhere with someone who is so incompetent that they can't even get my name right or so obtuse that they think it is a good interviewing strategy.

  39. MrClean

    MrClean Inglourious Basterd Club Member

Judging be your extreme reaction either $1 mill a year is chump change to you, or else you are too thin skinned to handle the rigors of the GM job.

No soup for you!!! Don't come back. 1 year.

From my perspective, you do not understand the term "thin skinned"

Plus I would have to have my employer be able to be able to actually correlate being called by the wrong name having anything to do with being able to deal with being a GM.

Reminds me a lot in my industry where it was very popular to ask logic questions in interviews, when finally they stopped the practice when they realized that the entire practice of asking logic questions was so stupid.

If I am someone who has questions about the good the ownership is and the structure and the owner can't even get my own name right, that pretty much proves that to be more of the case.

At least that would be a bigger part of my decision than the fact that one of the VPs is a woman who A) wants to keep her job and B) wants to eventually get promoted.
