Caserio, viewed around league as ‘organizer’ not ‘decision maker’ meets again w/Miami

The Boston Globe called it a surprise that Caserio even agreed to interview with the Dolphins, saying he turned down other GM opportunities in the past, including the Colts in 2012.

    From the Globe:

It is believed (Caserio) is the salary cap guy since Floyd Reese left the team, and he is frequently on the practice fields behind Gillette Stadium, keeping an eye on the roster as he keeps up with scouting the pro ranks and college players. Belichick frequently credits Caserio and his staff — the director of college scouting is Jon Robinson and the director of pro scouting is Bob Quinn — for finding players who contribute to the Patriots’ success, but many observers assume that Belichick is the one who pulls the strings, and it’s unclear how much influence Caserio has over those decisions.

A league source said Friday night that little is known about Caserio, around the league and that he’s seen more as an organizer than decision-maker.

A capologist for what, to work under or at Aponte's side? This is getting pathetic. We need a GM who is a talent evaluator, personnel/draft guru and a decision maker.

A former coach is mainly a capologist and not one who knows the football side of things?

That's exactly what Caserio is. The caveat comes from the fact that Belichick has final say, not Caserio. Caserio does all the personnel work, Belichick picks the players.

That's essentially the rub of hiring a personnel guy. Either you hire someone whom was previously fired, or you're hiring someone whom has never had the job whose best selling point is they may have helped someone else do it.

I'm trying to figure out why I would place more value in the idle opinions of posters on a Dolphins fan site than a writer for the Boston Globe (as per the PBP article) when it comes to a Patriots front office employee who is interviewing for the Fins GM position. I can't.

It would be one thing if there were ANY facts in the article, but even the few facts he states contradict his opinion.

An "organizer" not a "decision maker" at GM? He and Philbin should have a great time picking up wrappers together.

Probably because the article may very well be idle opinions of the Boston Globe writer... We don't really know and given the poor and sometimes slanderous reporting we get from our local guys, it's valid to question what comes from other team's local guys..

What exactly is it that people think that non-GM personnel executives do?

If you're not making the picks, you are organizing and gathering information for the person ultimately responsible for it.

We don't know, but the reason that I bothered to post it in the first place is that the info is counter to what I've previously heard and the source of this is a writer for the Boston Globe- the BG is pay per and I can't tell who wrote it- Dan Shaunessy or whoever. I have no idea to what extent the piece is accurate or not, but a lot of people here want to call bs to whatever they don't agree with as per the GM search, Aponte, etc. And again, I can understand that as per Armando and the bs factor, but Barry Jackson? Get real- none of us on a fan message board are on the inside, and the idea of taking anyone's opinion and facts here over Barry Jackson is laughable.

So here's a guy writing for the Globe- to what extent he's right or not I have no idea. What I can say is that given Cesario's playing and personnel experience, I'd like to hope that he can do the job well for Miami. I'm not bothered by the part about Cesario not being the personnel trigger man, of course that would be Bellichick for the Pats. But that part about more organizer than decision maker- again, I don't know but I don't,like it, would like to find out more about that. Same thing as before- would he be a good decision maker or not, because BB is pulling the trigger in NE. That's not the issue, the issue is can he do the job here.

There are holes in this reporter's story, but my question is whether it has legs or not- none of us here know that for sure. Cesario's resume indicates that he COULD be good for us at GM, but the "organizer" comment strikes a little too close to home imo, given that Philbin has the same rap, a glorified organizer functioning as an adequate head coach.

He sounds very well rounded, played QB in college, was a position coach in the pros, has done college and pro scouting and cap work, I think he has an MBA. That is about as well rounded a guy as you'll find on paper.

Wow is that an actual article with substance? Those exist?

No wonder it hasn't gotten posted before now.

Unrelated note, this guy looks almost exactly like Wes Welker.

If you think that Cesario looks like Welker- your judgement is even worse than I thought it was. Maybe it's another picture with a hand sticking out that clouded your judgement.

Sounds to me like the Boston Globe writer is just rationalizing why loosing Cesario would not be a bad thing. Unlike the local writers in Miami, many of the beat writers in Boston swoon over ever step the Pats make.

I think this would make Gaine retaining his current position more attractive. He's already assistant GM and with Caserio not being seen as a decision maker, Gaine could figure to have more power than when Ireland was here.

Yeah, but the question is, is Caserio outstanding at identifying player talent or not? The BG article raise a red flag, for better or worse. It's worth checking out.

he sounds like the best of both worlds. If he didn't have final say, I'd think it was due mainly to the structure he worked at more than anything. Doesn't mean he can't make decisions now or learn to.

Yeah, this dynamic sounds like a fit for the reduced role that Ross offered Ireland.

The Patriots have done a worse job drafting than Miami the past 5 years, so it doesn't instill an abundance of confidence in me if he had involvement in that.

While i like that he comes from a good organization and has a coaching background, I don't know if this team needs more nerdy, awkward types. Philbin is enough. Can we get a vocal leader on this team (gm, coach, player, owner...idk)??? sheesh

Really the Pats havenT transition from and older team to a contender over the last 3 years vs the Dolphins brutal personnel decisions, you are kidding me, right.

Caserio is only 38 years old. I picture these "sources around the league" as bitter old codgers who never got the chance to run a team.

If he was the guy that gave Bill a pool of players to choose from, the fact that they have some very talented players shows that he can at least identify talent. It could be that the players not picked were ultimately better or worse but it shows that he identified some good ones.
