I think he probably is a good evaluator of talent. And Miami needed that. And he doesn't have to deal with salary cap issues thanks to Dawn. And he is a little like the guy who Cleveland just hired as HC. He is willing to take the opportunity and show himself worthy. I respect that. But Ross is where I have the issue here. Hickey may turn out fine, but Ross absolutely is the loser here.

I'm going to give him a chance before I hang him. I'm not overly excited but you know what....lets see. We have a GM now and we srent THAT far away on the field. We will see what happens.

Exactly, a good GM just finds talent, not 100% on Hickey and think Gaine should have gotten the job, but suspect Ross's structure is so ****ed up potential GM's did not want to mess with it.

I can't wait for the BS press conference welcoming hickey as Miami's new GM where Ross will claim we got the guy we really wanted and he's super excited.

I hope you are right DJ, but he only took the job after at LEAST two other GM candidates turned the job down. It appears that Ross was left with Hickey and Gaine, aka Ireland Lite. I know I would feel a lot better about the Hickey hire if he had been the first person offered the job and he accepted. I just feel like Ross wanted the interviews over and he hired the only person left which wasn't already part of the failed Ireland player personnel department.

Maybe he will turn out to be okay as the teams GM. Right now though, this hire doesn't entice me to feel this organization is headed in the right direction. That will only happen for me once Ross sells the team to a new owner. Hopefully that will take place in the very near future.

Bucs fan here. Most of us are happy you guys hired Hickey.

From the rumor section on Walterfootball.com

Sources with the Buccaneers tell WalterFootball.com that internally, many staff members expect director of player personnel Dennis Hickey to be let go after the draft if he has any years remaining on his contract. Many around the league and with the Buccaneers were surprised that Hickey wasn't fired with former general manager Mark Dominik and head coach Greg Schiano. Hickey took over running the Bucs drafts in 2006, and their poor performance in the drafts played a huge role in the Bucs' 28-52 record over the past five seasons. Sources with the Buccaneers say that Hickey's future will be up to the new general manager to decide, but many staffers don't believe he'll survive the post-draft turnover in scouting departments.

Some sources found it laughable that Hickey was interviewed for the Dolphins general manager position and believe that was further proof that Miami owner Stephen Ross doesn't know what he's doing. Some in the league view Hickey as a coach and general-manager killer. The Bucs are on their fourth head coach and will be on third general manager since Hickey was promoted to the director of college scouting in 2006. In the scouting community, Hickey has the reputation of making a lot of poor evaluations that have led to a plethora of busted picks for Tampa Bay.

18 years in Tampa and not even a courtesy interview for their GM job.

Let that sink in. 18 years on the payroll and ZERO interest in giving him the big chair.

This isn't even a 2nd tier candidate. This is 5th tier. There is no way to spin this as a positive

This pretty much sums it up:

11 a.m. update: The Dolphins have hired Tampa Bay personnel director Dennis Hickey as their new general manager, as Armando Salguero has reported. Tennessee's Lake Dawson turned the job down a day after New England's Nick Caserio did the same.

Tampa Bay did not consider Hickey for their GM opening, even though he had been with the organization for 18 years. Hickey spent the past three years as the team's director of player personnel, after serving six years as their director of college scouting.

    Read more here: http://miamiherald.typepad.com/spor...hurricanes-marlins-chatter.html#storylink=cpy

If he wasn't even considered for the TB job after spending 18 years with the team we know that Miami signed a second tier candidate, at best. Being on shaky ground probably worked to his advantage- the team had to find someone desperate enough to take it in the rear as per Aponte and the toxic power structure. If it turns out that Hickey reports straight to Aponte, I'll just laugh and be done with it. Stephen Ross should be ashamed at how this all went down, once again Miami is a laughing stock. Pathetic.

How can I support someone that wasn't even a top 3 choice of ours?

He wasn't even viewed as highly by our own morons running the show.

Carl Peterson and Stephen Ross have ruined this franchise.

    I'm hopeless.

Can we discuss his merits rationally and without hyperbole or is it mandatory to run around like chicken little and say things like, "Ross just wanted to get the process over with so he just hired anyone" and "HIckey was the only guy that would take the job"?

To be fair, should we be using the Bucs' decision-making as basis as to why Hickey would not be a good GM?

I just hope the Miami media attacks Ross and Philbin in PC's with the same honest vitriol that the Cleveland media has done to the Browns.

I want them to ask Ross..

How can fans feel good about a man that was third maybe worse in your eyes?
What can you say to the fans to make them believe?

It's just trash. Make a banner asking Ross to sell the team.

There's very little positive to spin out of this. To outside eyes it very much looks like the Dolphins panicked and in the end just chose a guy who's main qualification was that he was the only one to say yes. After all that seemed to have transpired, it would have been wiser to just cut your loses, lick your wounds, and promote Gaine and let the show roll for one more year and clean up if any part failed.

They ended up choosing perhaps the very worse of alternatives, and only Hickey doing an exceptional job in the future would be able to salvage something out of what ended up being a very awful turn of events.

No you can't just gloss it over. We are disappointed and are expressing it. It's clearly obvious that after Dawson turned it down, Ross said "**** it hire Hickey"....only a team apologist can see this for anything else and put a positive spin on it.

    Can he construct an O-line?
Can he pick a good LB?
Can he pick a good safety?
    Can he get good RBs?

Im not going to say yes or no, but if we switch olines, RBs, FS, and LBs with TB last year, we are in the playoffs.

Who knows what happens but I'm a dolphins fan so I'll be here to see, whatever it becomes.

If there is a PC, I don't think Ross will be there, but will leave it to Garfinkle. This is so embarrassing even Harvey Greene will advise Ross to not put himself out there for the media to eat him up.

The Dolphin's GM position was unlike another GM position in the NFL in which power is spread evenly throughout the front office. It sounds like a lot of these guys wanted that traditional role and were disappointed when the Phins wouldn't budge and give in. Many of you may not agree with this structure, but no one cares if you do or don't. What we've had for the last 6 years did not work and you want more of the same? Maybe a new approach will be better for the organization. Can't be worse, right?

Because every single report, even national ones that (supposedly according to some) have a hidden agenda, have reported that despite 18 years with the Bucs, was not considered.

If you didn't notice this power structure was in place last year, and ended up in a disaster for the franchise off the field. But some people are just too blind to see through the bull****.

I'll be shocked if he does. I will also wonder if there will be NO Q & A from the local media if he does attend. Or he may leave after the introduction. If he stays and the media does not give him hardball questions you will know something was worked out ahead of time....no way some of the local writers and TV guys don't ask him the real questions.

14th ranked OL considered by PFF...check?
    Lavonte David/Mason Foster....check?
    Mark Barron and Dashon Goldson...check?
    Doug Martin and Mike James....check?

Not sure he was responsible for all of those picks, Goldson exception, but that's quite a pull of talent in two years.

Kinda bizarre they would hire Hickey and not even interview Dominik. Not that Dominik would have accepted the job anyway.

I didn't think I would ever see a more embarrassing GM search than the Jets last season. I was wrong. Thanks a lot, Steve Ross.

What does it really matter? Hickey would have still been the GM whether he was the 1st guy offered the job, or the 80th guy offered the job, at the end of the day it's still him. Sure, Ross & company valued others first over Hickey, but they didnt want to come here for whatever reasons we will never know. Christ, at least let the guy work a full season on the job before *****ing about it.

I get it, he's not a top teir guy... He's nowhere near the guy I wanted either... but he's here now. Let's at least see what he's got first...

The worst part about all of this: After this whole mess Brian Gaine would have been the best option. But Ross couldn't hire him because it would have appeared to be settling. So he hired a candidate who in all likelihood is much much worse. A guy who was with his team for 18 years and didn't get an interview. And we just hired him.

Sure, I'll give the man a chance. But any of you pretending like this is even close to a positive outcome for the biggest hire for this franchise in years are mother ****ing kidding yourselves. But congratulations you've reached BLIND HOMER: EXPERT LEVEL.

He might do just fine, but the whole GM search process has been a disaster with everyone they wanted turning them down.

Can only hope the Dolphins lucked themselves into a great GM so we can forget about it. I'm not too hopeful, but we will see, I won't hate on him yet. Its not his fault the organization is a dysfunctional mess.

I genuinely fail to see his qualification for the job. Does he come from a winning organization with a proven track record in talent evaluation? No. Did Tampa Bay draft well during his tenure? No. Did they nail free agency? No. I can certainly respect that you'd give him an interview anyway; after all, he's never made the final calls and might be a great talent evaluater buried under questionable GMs. He nails the interview and impresses you, you roll the dice with him. However, that's not what we did. We literally waited for everyone but Brian Gaine to say "no thanks" before we offered him the job. Hickey might actually turn out to be good but I don't buy for a minute that the Dolphins are convinced that he will be. He was a desperation hire, and desperation hires usually don't go too well.
