For anyone that actually cares about his history with the Bucs. These years pertain to him being the Director of College Scouting (or better), 2005 to current. The bolded are players that have made the Pro Bowl (3). It's pretty bleak obviously... but the last three years are fairly decent. There's some good players in there. Lavonte David, Doug Martin, Mason Foster are all quality players off the top of my head. 2005 Draft Round Pick # Name Position College 1 5 Carnell Williams Running Back Auburn 2 4 Barrett Ruud Linebacker Nebraska 3 7 Alex Smith Tight End Stanford 3 27 Chris Colmer Offensive Tackle North Carolina State 4 6 Dan Buenning Guard Wisconsin 5 5 Donte Nicholson Safety Oklahoma 5 19 Larry Brackins Wide Receiver Pearl River Community College 6 4 Anthony Bryant Defensive Tackle Alabama 7 7 Rick Razzano Fullback Mississippi 7 11 Paris Warren Wide Receiver Utah 7 17 Hamza Abdullah Safety Washington State 7 39 J. ....It's not that bad, all things considered. I can't say I'm familiar with how scouts and GM work together, though. Is the picks made by the GM indicative how highly rated he though Hickey was?
The Bucs draft history isn't bad at all. What's more, they actually nailed big money free agency with two guys who were clear winners in Vincent Jackson and to a lesser degree Carl Nicks. It's just you can't really attribute anything good or bad to Hickey.
How many of these guys are starters either on the Bucs or on some other team? It'd be nice to compare those numbers to Ireland's drafts and see the differences.
Well he was promoted by the Bucs to director of player personnel on July 6, 2011. So I think you can go with 2012 and 2013 as him being very tied to what happened in free agency and the draft those 2 years.
And thus begins the slow painful process of Dolphin fans tricking themselves into being enamored with this hire...
Yes, I don't see how anyone thinks you can meaningfully attribute anything to a guy who doesn't have final say. If you've got examples where a guy made or advocated for a certain decision, sure. Otherwise, it's a bit of a fool's errand.
Ross obviously believes Dennis Hickey is the best man for the team. as fans, the best thing we can do is to accept it and allow the guy to prove himself without further ado. a good thing would be to end the negativity surrounding all things dolphin. the 2014 season is officially on the road. let's do it right!
Give the guy a chance....jesus. The reason the Bucs are garbage is coaching and QB play....not their management.
Does this not raise other questions moving forward? If Hickey doesn't have final say here, then how do you get rid of him if necessary moving forward, say maybe as early as next year? Does this become his next 18 yr gig because no one can attribute responsibility?
Ross was quoted as saying "The GM will have final authority over the 53 man roster and the draft and report to me." I'm just going to accept that as what's happening until I see otherwise.
Someone posted a link in one of the other threads that Lawson said he declined the job because Ross told him that Philbin will have control of the 2014 roster. The GM job is not a real GM job.
I would think that the coach does decide who actually starts/plays and when but doesn't actually draft or sign players on most teams. Really if the coach and GM can't work together its not going to work anyways so its not really an issue to me.
Unless he had final say on who to pick I dont really care about the draft record. I certainly will care after he has conducted our first draft.
So what's the point in judging him with drafts if we don't even know who he lobbied for and against Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Hickey was basically stripped of any power/sway when it came to the draft once Dominik came in.... Hence the "decent" Bucs drafts the last 5 years... Prepare for a craptastic draft for the next 2-3 years
Their drafts were mediocre but they have had a rubbish team for years. If I am honest, I don't care if he drafted a dozen Pro Bowlers, what was the record, wins and losses, of the teams he helped assemble? We hired a 5th rate candidate who is not highly thought of. I thought he was a throw in candidate amongst all the other good names. He was the guy I liked the least.
He was Allen's right hand man from 04-08Both Gruden and Allen have said they "deeply trusted" his assessments...Dominic relegated him to a figurehead in the scouting department ....hence the "decent" Bucs drafts the last 4 yearsThe phins are IN TROUBLE if he has any input in the draft process
Really dont know what to think of Hickey… Will let you know what I think after the draft… cause as of right now… we really dont know ****
I'm honestly not sure how much that means. Noone is ever going to say "Oh that guy was a hack I hated him"
Well, I think he was a part of building their draft board. You can get a general sense for the criteria the Bucs felt were important and what necessarily wasn't important. They, for example, didn't mind character concerns as much as other teams (the Dolphins) apparently... I'm thinking WR Mike Williams, CB Aqib Talib, RB L. Blount for instance. Just off the top of my head. It'll be interesting to see how he gets along with Philbin in that respect.
