It was an attractive job. If, however, it's true that Philbin is given control over the final roster and/or that everyone answers to Aponte, then the job went from attractive to train wreck in the span of some interviews.

Exactly, but in this case the guys who were calling it a mess were right and Jeff Darlington, AKA the guy everyone trusts, was wrong.

I don't think you can call it a mess without knowing what they were doing and why they didn't go w certain candidates and why others turned it down.

I'd be surprised if their offers were the same to each candidate (in $ and power).

Actually come to think of it, hearing that Philbin and Aponte have final say is the best case scenario at this point. At least then if (when) we fail again this year Ross may actually be forced into cleaning house. As opposed to giving a new GM a couple more years to build his team. Hopefully this really is a sink or swim year and Aponte and Philbin have no one to sacrifice in place of themselves.

The GM has control of the roster and answers to him (Ross).

This blends with everything I've heard about Miami's search for a GM: They aren't hiring someone to report to Dawn Aponte or Joe Philbin.

    Jeff Darlington@JeffDarlington10 de jan
I'll say it again: Philbin is a respected coach. Tannehill is a respected young QB. There are plenty of worthy candidates who like this job.

    Jeff Darlington@JeffDarlington10 de jan
I pity any worthy candidate who would pass an opportunity to interview for one of 32 GM jobs because of outside perceptions. That's foolish.

    Jeff Darlington@JeffDarlington10 de jan
I sense a lot of Aponte criticism lately, but I'm not sure people understand what she even does. Seems more like an asset than a threat.

    Jeff Darlington@JeffDarlington10 de jan
If Aponte has power, it is apparently a result of respect. And if a confident GM can't handle that, well, he's not much of a man... is he?

    Jeff Darlington@JeffDarlington14 de jan
I’m told Ray Farmer, for instance, was delightfully surprised by the situation in Miami. He really liked everyone, including Aponte/Philbin.

    Jeff Darlington@JeffDarlington14 de jan
I say that because, if indeed Farmer becomes a finalist, it is very clear to me that he covets the job. I don’t think that’s a big issue.

    Jeff Darlington@JeffDarlington14 de jan
Well, it wasn’t such an assumption last week when everyone acted like the job is radioactive. @PhilippeEde: Of course he's going to say that

It doesn't matter what Ross said at this point. The best applicants turned the job down after interviewing. You can keep on pretending everything is cool if that helps you sleep.

This move cripples us for the next 5 years in my eyes.

If we would have hired Gaine and things went bad we could have cleaned house after the 2014 season or after the 2015 season. With a new GM he will likely get to to pick a new coach if Philbin doesn't work out and then give that new coach 3 additional years.

Ross really ****ed this organization. Hard.

Unless of course we don't know the inner details of the situation, maybe Ross is trying to get two individuals to become one force, I mean I would think Aponte knows her role, and will not step on the toes of a man who is qualified in a different part of the process, and vice versa for Hickey, maybe this hire is based on trust and the theory that personnel men are best suited for just that..

It only works if Aponte knows how to NOT meddle with the GMs main responsibility..I don't think it's that far fetched to expect she understands that considering how she got to where she is..

A synergy of sorts is the goal, respect for each other's craft yet working together, it happens all the time in the business world.

    the poor house

My GOD this is the best question I have seen on this site in a while.

the answer is MR. didn't want to fire Ireland and then he doesn't offer a sincere answer to the canidates questions.

Mr. Ross is not a respected owner and many of coaches players and administrators talk and Ross has got a bad reputation .

I wish someone would find out how our former players feel about this current owner .

I'm not saying I'm gonna be right JW, it's pure hope at this point..what I am hopin for is maybe these two can form a relationship the league hasn't quite seen before.

I do like the concept though...if the two can trust each other and not step on each other's toes..

I look at it like this, the chances of them both being experts in two completely different aspects of the game are slim. Why not give it a chance to see if two separate experts can form one hell of a singular voice.

Yet, he did not take the time to go to the Senior Bowl because he was hiring a ****ing crony to be his LB coach.

I don't want to be right but I think Philbin may turn into Cam Cam Part II.

maybe he's strictly a personnel guy and fit in nicely with what Ross wanted here with Apontes skillset..maybe he accepted the job because he knows his strengths and weaknesses.

Bucs fan here. Just wanted to drop by and say sorry. This guy is a hack who failed upwards. We were going to fire him after the draft, glad someone took us off of our hands. Now we can elevate Stokes to director of player personnel. Once again, I'm really sorry.

Yes, I agree if the structure is literal, however I don't think it is, I don't think Aponte could be that naive, or intrusive to another experts field.

I am laughing at Dolphin fans disregarding some new Buc fans coming here and consoling us.

Think about what we ALL would be doing if someone had hired Jeff Ireland? We'd all be signing up to console fans of that team.

I'm not taking Buc fans opinions as empty or trolling. I'm taking them as educated opinions from people who paid attention to how this guy has worked for years. The Dolphins are going to spin in as a positive. The rainbow and lollipop crowd here will spin it as a positive.

Qualifications: Served as Tampa Bay's director of college scouting for six years (2005-10)…credited with helping Tampa Bay acquire players such as CB Darrelle Revis (free agent, 2013), DT Gerald McCoy (first-round pick, 2010), RB Doug Martin (first round, 2012) and LB Lavonte David (second round, 2012)…started as Buccaneers college scout (1998-2009) and pro personnel assistant (1996-97).

Detractions: Hickey wasn't interviewed for Tampa Bay's vacant GM job…He's viewed almost as a last resort after others such as New England's Nick Caserio and Tennessee's Lake Dawson turned down job offers, Cleveland's Ray Farmer elected to stay with the Browns and Arizona's Jason Licht accepted the GM job with Tampa Bay.

If someone hires Jeff Ireland ill tell them he isn't as bad as advertised but histime to get it done here passed. Hes a great evaluator of late round talent and can help a team be competitive if nothing else. Most of his tenure he ddidn't have a QB and wasn't in position to draft one.

Buccaneer Fan Here (Somebody linked to my post on the Bucs board)

This is an absolutely horrific hire by the Dolphins. Hickey has consistently failed upwards in our organization over the years. Years of mediocre scouting (Yes, scouting Gramatica was his best moment); yet he somehow managed to progress through the ranks at One Buc Place. Our poor drafting can be directly attributed to Hickey's failures. From Gaines Adams to Dexter Jackson (a ballerina WR); we have burned premium draft picks in a way that has left our roster largely devoid of elite homegrown talent.

Hickey's progression in Tampa Bay came down to a few things. He was an amiable, positive "company man". I'm not surprised Ross was suckered in by that kind of attitude and approach. Most importantly; our owner Malcolm Glazer suffered a completely debilitating stroke years ago. His sons have nowhere near the passion for the team as the old man did. The Glazer Sons have a certain affinity for people that came up during the Rich McKay/Dungy glory years. Recently fired Mark Dominik was one such type. Hence a certain amount of dead wood piled up in One Buc Place in the kind of non-glamour roles that Hickey occupied over the years. Thankfully we're starting to clear it out.

There are zero positives in this hire outside of getting him out of our hair (which we are eternally grateful for). This hire is yet another example of how badly Ross has run the Dolphin organization. As someone who survived Hugh Culverhouse; I can smell a bad owner a mile away. Ross has that same meddling stench and will continue to make things worse in Miami.

He was also the guy who asked Myron Rolle (during combine interviews) how it feels to "abandon" his team?

He only got promoted because the Glazers didn't want to hire someone at a competitive salary.

He only took the Dolphins job because he was more than likely fired after our draft.
