I'm new to this website but have followed CK for a little while, and I am wondering what his thoughts are on the Dolphins hiring Dennis Hickey as the new GM? I'm getting tired of hearing nothing but negative comments about the entire process and the Miami Dolphins. Jason C. from CBS is an idiot and I feel has his own agenda against the Dolphins. I read other articles on other sites and other blogs and it is all gloom and doom, and quite frankly I am tired of it. CK if you are lurking, please tell me what you think of this hiring.

    Thanks.

CK would most likely make a much better GM than Hickey while we're on the topic.

Is there anyone who does like the hire, all things considered? Ross is arguably the worst owner in the NFL and the Dolphins have suffered for it every year since his arrival. Get used to it folks, this is your Miami Dolphins until Ross sells the team.

I like it, considering we could've ended up with Blichick's secretary, lake Dawson, or ireland's puppet. Mattter of fact, since it came down to those 4 down the stretch, I love this hire. I am relieved.

True. After being turned down by 5 guys, Ross was able to hire his REAL first choice.

    Everybody should celebrate. Makes sense

welcome to the forum & things aren't so bad as many would have you believe.

only CK can answer for CK.
it may well be he's not quick to answer because, unlike the great majority who post here, his opinion has to be thought out & answered responsibly. it is a a question of professional accountability.
or perhaps, he's taking a break from the noise & chaos of the moment. not to worry. I'm sure he'll share his opinion with the board when the time is right.

not everybody on this forum is a negativity broker...

Basically that is true, They all wanted the power to fire Philbin... Ross said no, therefore they werent his top choice. You can rip Ross for not giving the position enough power. But don't think its because they didnt want to be here.

    That is basically manipulating words.

He wanted those guys with the power Hickey has over Hickey. They rejected. Others turned us doe for further interviews because Ross didn't know their names correctly.

    LOL.

A PM might have sufficed. ;)

Contrary to popular belief I'm not the type that starts whole threads just to give people "my take" on a subject. I usually start a thread based on specific bits of news (to which I might/will attach 'my take') or specific bits of research/analysis (to which I might/will attach 'my take').

That said you asked for it and my opinion is that the process which resulted in Dennis Hickey's hire was woefully flawed and this is reflected by the fact that the Dolphins were rejected for first interviews by Marc Ross, Lional Vital, Scott McCloughan and Tom Gamble (that we know of), had Jason Licht, Brian Xanders and Ray Farmer pull out of consideration, and had job offers rejected by Nick Caserio and Lake Dawson.

As Dave Hyde said, the Dolphins got anywhere from their 3rd to their 8th choice at General Manager. Personally I think it could be more like their 11th choice.

    1. Bucs fans overwhelmingly hated Hickey, and I'm not talking about right now as he walks out the door and they try and pretend that anyone leaving is awful and anyone coming in is great. I'm talking years ago as Dennis Hickey was employed and continued to climb up the ladder, the fans all hated him.

    2. The "behind the scenes stuff" is overwhelmingly bad. I will not elaborate on this publicly.

    3. The choice of his right hand man will be interesting. The two most likely are Brian Gaine and Mark Dominik and the interesting aspect of that choice is either man is likely to be WAY WAY WAY WAY WAY more popular than Dennis Hickey. With everyone. Excepting perhaps Philbin who supposedly gets along with Hickey.

    4. Haven't been impressed by the overall talent acquisition process in the areas for which he was responsible at the times he was responsible. Buccaneers took his attention off draft stuff and hired Eric Stokes because they didn't think they were drafting well. Most indications are that he was about to be unemployed.

I had no dog in this race from a personal/emotional standpoint. Everyone knows I disliked Jeff Ireland and wanted him out. I would love to sit here and tell you how much better his replacement is going to be. But I find myself unable to do that. I had candidates I liked and I had candidates I felt lukewarm about and I had candidates I felt lukecold about and then I had Dennis Hickey. Yes, that was my opinion when I first heard he had an interview, after I did some digging. That remains my opinion today.

If you want my take on the potential positives, here they are:

    1. Remember that the Dolphins' immediate future is going to be decided by the players already on roster and the coaching staff in place much more than by one offseason's worth of player acquisitions. If you go 1-15 it wasn't because you made the wrong GM hire that year.

    2. From a personnel standpoint...it's hard to be real bad at it. That's the truth. It's hard to be especially good and it's hard to be especially bad. If you stay between the yellow lines (and even the personnel people that don't have a clue are pretty good at staying between the yellow lines) then there's a certain percentage chance you have a blowout draft with pro bowls galore. There's also a certain percentage chance you draft all duds. Free agency can be more tricky but most teams adopt a "re-sign our own and make low to mid level acquisitions" stance when it comes to free agency...so they're not really risking much.

Any possiblity this is a Lame Duck GM, only to be washed out with the rest of the FO next year if things aren't noticeably ticking upwards?

I worry that Steve Ross (somehow) really did walk out of this thing feeling like he made a great hire and that means it will be like pulling teeth to get this guy out of the organization.

If you're not a Dennis Hickey fan...you'd better become a Dawn Aponte fan all the sudden. If Ross came out of this hire with high confidence in Hickey then she's the only assassin with the skills to take him out.

I wish but I really doubt it. You don't hire a GM to fire him a year later. It probably means that him and Philbin are going to be in Miami for a few more years together.

"Lame Duck" does not exist in the NFL. If a coaches/gm win they keep their jobs. If they lose they have a chance to lose it.

Unless a coach or GM is retiring, however chances are the GM has an assistant is going to take their place. It is pretty rare that a head coach announces retirement before the season starts.

  31. I am curious who shoulders the responsibility to resign their own FAs and to sign new ones to plug existing holes. If Philbin dictates what he wants and Aponte controls the purse what does that leave for the GM to actually do?

Can he really, really think that? The day they hired Hickey, two guys they (allegedly) made offers to declined them. You know better than me how many guys pulled out or disqualified themselves in the beginning. And was Hickey even one of the GM finalists? I heard about Dawson and Caserio (late in the works) getting finalist interviews and Xanders and Farmers pulling their names from being finalists. Did Hickey get a finalist interview? As likely, the Dolphins had shot their proverbial wad and only two names remained: Hickey and Gaine. In this case, better to go with the devil you don't know...

Ross can't be blind and deaf. He can't be that oblivious to what people in the NFL think, not to mention the media and his fanbase. Can he? Sure, he can be prideful, and say that, "It's my team; I'm going to do it my way, and it'll work my way," like Daniel Snyder and Jerry Jones do. I guess maybe I'm answering my own question. Maybe that's just it. I just can't see how. But that's on me.

Yes, it's quite possible. It's often what happens when you make a decision- you align your beliefs to fit that decision, regardless of how poor it is, so that there's internal peace and balance within the mind to keep us sane. That's how POW's could turn on their own country in the Vietnam War. Have them list or say all the things they don't like about America and sooner or later they'll align their beliefs to fit with what they're repeatedly saying- that America is essentially a bad country.

As poor a hire as Hickey seems to be, Ross made the decision to go ahead with it, so now he's gotta stand by that decision, and he'll no doubt have to defend that decision against scrutiny and opposition, and thus- the more he defends his poor decision the greater it will solidify his misguided belief that he made a good hire.
