Under What Circumstances Would NFL Take Over A Franchise?

When the owner runs out of money.

 

It would take something very extreme. The Wells case puts Martin in a bad light more than anyone.

 

If they didn't do it when Al Davis alive, they aren't going to do it.

 

You are so far off reservation here. Why would they even consider such a thing? Because some people perceive him as not very good at his job?. He's not broke, he's not a criminal, he's not spouting inappropriate comments left and right. He's just not doing a good job. However, there are plenty other incompetent owners. Thus turkeys would not vote for thanksgiving.

 

....the Commissioner works for the owners....lets see here....Hmmmm. The only way an owner gets removed is if there is a serious legal matter or an issue like in LA where the team could not be run by the owner anymore. If Ross gets a divorce and the team is in the mix....he's a goner, he gets arrested and put in jail.....he's a goner. A PR blackeye? I don't see it even being a possibility. The Martin Saga was nothing compared to Spygate and Bountygate and neither of those owners even once got mentioned as possibly losing the team.

 

Don't get your hopes up. Zygi Wilf was found guilty of fraud and racketeering and is still the owner of the Vikings. Eddie Debartolo was found guilty of extortion and was only ban for 1 year. The Brown's owner Jimmy Haslam is currently under federal investigation. So even if the Wells report came back and pointed at Ross as the instigator, a workplace harassment case pails in comparisons to those indiscretions.

 

No circumstance, other than financial instability, failure to pay bills, etc.

 

If you really want to get rid of Ross, the only way is to stop showing up and cost him money. But even that is no guarantee

 

They tried to do that with Davis, but the Davis fought back too hard...hehehe

Seriously, I can't see any way they try to push Ross out of the NFL. For all he's done wrong, he's done them to better the team. As others have said, this Bully-gate thing is more directed to two individuals, not the the entire team, although any time something like this happens, there has to be changes to prevent them from happening again...

 

Its actually not that far fetched. The NBA basically told James Dolan he was going to fire Isiah Thomas and bring in Donnie Walsh. MLB basically told the Wilpons they were going to bring in Sandy Alderson against their will. And they did it with the Dodgers. The NHL has had to step in for financial reasons (Phoenix) in a few instances and instability in others (Islanders, Edmonton). If the NFL cant realize they have a problem with ownership being overwhelmed in one of its underperforming markets then they they arent worrying as much about their profits as they could. Miami is a great football city when the team is playing well. Its been that way before and it can be that again. Just because Ross is a clueless twit and completely mishandled the entire process from both a hiring and PR viewpoint it doesnt mean the league has to look the other way. It would actually be proactive to either give him a better plan for future situations or hint that he may be in over his head. Im not sure they can tell him to sell the team but helping their own products performance in a given market has been done before.

 

I dislike Ross as an owner just as much as you, Bpk, but it would have to get so much worse than it already is before it to even be considered. His boobery hasn't reached that epic a level yet. Wouldn't surprise me though if he were to get some friendly hints from other owners or the league that running an NFL is a full time job and he better start taking it a bit more seriously.

Our realistic hope is that Ross gets tired of this dream he had of being an NFL owner realizing it's not the fun job he thought it would be and sells the team.

What has he done that has warranted him being removed from being an owner....
He's spent money to improve the team.

He's made an effort to get funding to improve the stadium.

He's bought the remaining tickets to prevent blackouts.

His biggest issue has been his choice in the people he brings into the organization and those choices are not as bad as the fans are making them to be. He's also a little too loyal.

While the team has been the very definition of mediocre they haven't been awful

Seriously, if look at some situations with other teams the Dolphins are not even in the bottom half of how orgianizations are run. Complain all you want, boycott with your wallet.

 

The circumstances would have absolutely nothing to do with two things, we know:

#1: Incompetence on the field and in the front office.
#2: Criminal activity by the owner.

The ONLY reason the NFL might take over a team would be something stupid and purely financial, like refusing to go on Hard Knocks.

I can't envision ANY circumstances under which that would happen in the NFL.

Let's say Ross got caught with a metric ton of cocaine in his house, and recorded by the FBI/DEA trying to sell it. He would be arrested and tried; but as we know, the wealthy almost never have to truly pay for their crimes, so he would get off on a technicality or do a few months in a country club.

In the interim, the NFL seizes the Dolphins; Ross would use his considerable wealth to get them back through legal wrangling.

Net result: a drug dealer moving a metric ton of cocaine could continue to own the Miami Dolphins. So, no...I don't see it ever happening.

 

Joking with another poster warrants being asked to not post on the site.....I would hope a group of sports fans could handle a comments like that and judging what I have read in other forums I believe my comment was mild...

Sorry, Matt, but Bill Bidwill and Ralph Wilson and Bob Irsay all mismanaged their respective teams for decades, refusing to stock the rosters except to the absolute minimum requirements, milking them for everything they could and never fielding a competitive club, and the league stood by and did nothing. Hell, the league even cheered on when the Colts and Cardinals moved to other cities.

 

But take heart, Miami sports fans; you might yet get to see one of your pro teams taken over from bad ownership.

Once corrupt scumbag Bud Selig finally goes to hell where he deserves to spend eternity, MLB might finally take over the Marlins from noted scumbag Jeff Loria.

Ross did what you wanted, now you're talking about having the team stripped from his control without even giving the new guy a chance to set up his office or hire a secretary.

Haven't the Marlins won a World Series with him as owner? They will start winning again and everything will be fine. They blow up the team and contend within a few years every so often, its what he does.

 

There will always be a whipping boy( or girl) to take the brunt of the blame. Take your pick...Ireland, Ross, Philbin, Aponte, Hickey.... You name it. As soon as one is gone...fans will just move on to the next. As soon as Philbin is gone...the next coach or GM will be incompetent or the devil himself.

Ross didn't pay for stadium upgrades himself because the NFL wanted him to get funding through the public/taxes. Ross has done all that the NFL has asked him to do.

Ultimately the fans will decide how long he owns the team. Once we collectively stop buying what he's selling he's gone. Move the team? Go right ahead but keep in mind, the league needs a SoFla franchise. The name, history etc stays in Miami plus another city would want a newly named franchise.

The Marlins have won two world championships since the last time Miami reached the AFC title game. And they managed to get a new stadium through the legislature while the Dolphins can't even get stadium upgrades passed. From a business POV I'd say they are being run relatively well.

Yea that's actually not true. The team may change names, but the franchise holds onto the rights of the history and names. That is an issue with the Thunder and Seattle Supersonics. If Seattle gets a team back they would want the name and stats/records back but they belong to theThunder. So if Miami moves and changes names, it's bye bye dolphins.
