Did the Browns buy the name back from Baltimore? Or does the NFL own the name? Or does the name belong to the city? I'm not sure how the process works.

Ask Edward J. DeBartolo, Jr. what it takes for the NFL to make you give up control.

  4. Agreed that it is not far fetched, unlikely perhaps but not far fetched. Something similar was done in the early 90's and reinvented a team that we despise today. The league reached out to Parcells to turn the Patriots around and after they struggled under him and the threat of them moving to St Louis was looming. They intervened by offering Kraft a buiseness friendly deal if he agreed to buy the team and keep them in NE. For whatever reason the other owners did not want the Pats moving and while they did not do anything by force they absolutely pressured the team to stay put.

    Here and there
The City of Cleveland had to take legal action against Art Modell in order to keep the name and team statistics. Anyone beleive that would happen in Miami?

Yes more history. The Dolphins havent won a championship in 40 years and the Browns havent won one in 50. yippy.

After extensive talks between the NFL, the Browns, and officials of the two cities, Cleveland accepted a legal settlement that would keep the Browns legacy in Cleveland.[115] In February 1996, the NFL announced that the Browns would be 'deactivated' for three years, and that a new stadium would be built for a new Browns team, as either an expansion team or a team moved from another city, that would begin play in 1999. Modell would in turn be granted a new franchise, the NFL's 31st, for Baltimore, the Baltimore Ravens, retaining the current contracts of players and personnel. The Browns ceased play at the end of the 1995 season when Modell relocated the organization to Baltimore. The Browns franchise was then reactivated, and its roster restocked via an expansion draft before resuming play in the 1999 season. There would be a new team, but the Browns' name, colors, history, records, awards and archives would all remain in Cleveland.[115]

As you can see Clevand was a special case. Ownership reatains the rights to all trademarks, colors, name etc and for cleveland to keep theirs it took legal action. Technically the browns never moved as while the players did leave, they were turned into a new franchise.

what we need is for MR Ross to get a divorce from Carl Peterson and hook up with Zach Thomas or Trace Armstrong.

I did. Maybe it was the ignorant label. Or the stupid *** ideas thing. (Paraphrasing, as I'm not about to re-read it). Terms of Service here are to make it about the topic, not the poster, and I certainly could tell you held a low opinion of me based on that post. But that's not the unfortunate part.

Here's the real issue. Your reply looked like it had some decent thoughts and points in it, but because it was bookended with insults I didn't actually take them in. Which is a shame as it probably could have been a good back and forth discussion, which is what I started the thread for in the first place. You seem like you have some decent ideas. I hope you can stick around and share them within the rules we set out on the site.

Anyways, thanks to ALex for having my back and to you for being accountable and apologizing.

One last thought… I can;t speak for other fans. but I'm at a rather low point in my fandom and looking for ways to keep hopeful. Maybe vilifying Ross isn't it, but each of us deals with disappointment differently. At the end of the day, we all love this team and want to see it returned to greatness. We share our joys and pains as fans collectively, though we voice them differently.

    Welcome to ThePhins, buddy.

p.s. - to be fully open, I reported your first post for the reasons I stated above. Given your apology though, I am hoping a mod reads this and just lets things lie. We've moved on. Cheers.

The hours I could disagree with you on parsing the phrase "Ross did what you wanted." would waste both of our time.

Suffice to say that the statement, at face values, has little to do with Ross really doing much of what I want, nor doing it how I want it.

But it's not my team. It's his. So he gets to do as he pleases with the Dolphins while I all I get are my posts. lol.

It's called friendship. And perhaps time has been put in earning one another's respect.

    Lesson over.

You may be right. Borderline, imo. If it moved there, it'd be fine.

I think it's reasonable as a hypothetical. I don't expect the Phins to be taken over…. but I'm wondering what it would take before that would happen.

were not like other forums, promise you that..it's all good man, BK is always thinking out of the box..and you apologized..

I agree with everything you said about the owner..his intentions are in the right place, we shall see soon about his football man instincts.

If this team gets off to a slow start, your looking at the worst attendance numbers in history that will follow.. That is def a concern as far as the future goes.

My post came across poorly and it was not intended to be mean spirited, only under the guise to give one a "hard time"...again, sorry for coming across as a "Richard"

    Moving on...

Ross....does make questionable moves and would LOVE for him to hire a "czar" to over see the team, but billionaires are billionaires and he seems like wants to have some input into the team (at least in the assembling who the decision makers are)....we should count our lucky stars that the guy doesn't want to BE the GM and make player personal decisions as well.

It could be a good thing or bad thing, but the guy seems pretty loyal to his employees (gave Jeffy a few seasons too many and seems to want to give Philbin considerable time to prove his value). The problem I have (and why many turned down the position) is he has staggered his firings and as a result has never been able to bring in a true regime change. Gm's will always want "their guy" and will wait for an opportunity to have the ability to bring in "their guy". Personally I think the whole dysfunction angle has been blown waaaay out of proportion and perpetuated by many in the local media which has led many in the national media (because how dare they do any research on their own) to latch on the same concept. The loyalty thing could be good in the long run if Ross does eventually decide to truly clean house as candidates know they will be given a fair chance to turn the team around.

I will give Ross credit for "opening the purse strings" to allow Miami the ability to, at least financially, attract the best players available on the market. With NFL players...money talks and Ross (being the 3rd or 4th richest owner) is in no short supply of it. The man has also made moves (or at least attempted to) improve the stadium, granted it fell through (and I'm one who believes a billionaire should use his own money to improve things he owns), I can at least appreciate the effort.

In the end...I fully understand your disgust with the team as it never seems like they make the "right" moves and always appear to be the odd man out acquiring top staff talent. At least he does care about what the fans want and does try to improve the team....I guess I'm saying the effort is there even if the results are mixed.

That's all true. But at the same time there hadn't been much in the way of precedent like I mentioned above. You're probably right though...the league will probably do nothing unless we have more Incognito/Martin type incidents. Being cheap is one thing but damaging the league reputation is an entirely different thing. One can only hope Ross gets his poop together.

and there are those (in Dolfandom) that maintain a Clintonesque Hit-List. they are endlessly negative & counter-productive to moving forward? be it as it may, it will never end & neither will the hater's zeal to attack & destroy whatever chance we have of creating an environment conducive to winning for our franchise.

there will always be "one more problem"
