"Joe Montana was the product of the system, Dan Marino was the system." Is this a real quote or something Dolphin fans invented? I can't find an origin. Anyone have an article or something to link?
I wish you could view it somewhere, because I can't find it anywhere. Everyone thinks it's something Dolphins fans fabricated.
When I searched for it, I could never find it. You have heard it? If so I believe it. But damn it'd be cool if we can find it.
Its been talked about and validated several times. Personally, I never heard him say it BUT I did hear Walsh refer to it years later and in fact stated he did say it, and meant it.
In some of the NFL Films stuff that is shown on NFL Network, Walsh can be seen saying this. I have seen it on multiple 'Top 10' shows. I would not be surprised if it is on YouTube. In the same sit-down, he says he had a chance to chat with Marino and asked him "what he sees?", like a 'show me your progressions' kind of thing. He quotes Marino as saying, "I just throw it to the open man."
doesn't sound like something he would say or maybe was taken out of context. probably, it's just another fan fantasy, gone wild.
I saw a interview with Walsh and he was asked about the saying. He said he did say it . He also said that he never saw a QB who could read a defense as fast and as accurately as Marino most of the time. He really admired Marino. I tried to find the video --no luck
I saw it as well. One never knows about that stuff, though. Coaches like Walsh were always gracious toward other players. I don't think he was denigrating Montana as much as being gracious to Dan. In fact, I don't think Dan would have been well-suited to Walsh's offense - though Walsh would have adjusted somewhat. Montana was perfect for it, tho. Two different QB personalities who were spectacular with their skills.
No, not a fantasy of mine. I did see the interview...just can't seem to find it now...in fact, I've seen it or heard it several times on NFLN in the past...
Cool pic G Man! I have that one displayed in my Hallway of Fame (out of direct sunlight) Never knew the signed prints were limited to just 250! I'm assuming those numbers lie beneath the matts of its framing. Almost tempted to open it up.
I personally think that Bill Walsh quote was more of him tooting his own horn and taking a stab at Shula than actually praising Dan Marino. Pretty much saying: "I was able to win 3 Super Bowls with Montana at QB playing my system and Shula won nothing while he had Dan Marino."
To each his own , but I personally didnt take it that way at all. Seems like a genuinely honest praise of Marino and nothing more.
With this many reporting they saw it, I believe it 100% now. Before I was sketchy. Now if we can get that damn video that would be golden.
