No, we did not have "a ton" of talent on the team. The coaches had them crap the bed?? No. It was the talent. The coaches made their share of mistakes as most will, but you're putting too much on the coaches. It was the talent level that crap the bed at the end of the season. Sorry, but true. We had an OL which got their QB sacked more than any other QB in the whole freakin' league. We had injuries which forced other receivers to have to step up to the plate. The LBs, at times, were horrible with their missed tackles and misreads. We had a sophmore QB who was quite raw to begin with. He did some great things and put a lot on his back, but he certainly made a lot of mistakes and still needs time and work to further develop. IMO, the last Jets game was a lot on his shoulders. He was terrible in that game as well as others. There's a lot I like about him and I've hardly given up hope, but I am certainly not at the point where I can anoint him as our savior, franchise player whom we've been dreaming of finding for so long. There has to be more development. To put all of what unfolded on the coaches alone is ridiculous.
If Gaine was informed in that fashion, that's not right, but mediocre talent was the reason we lost games. How Hickey treats his staff has nothing to do with the fact that we lost those games these past few seasons season...poor talent in too many areas has more to do with it than whether Gaine was treated fairly or not...
You'll see posters say we only won 8 games due to poor coaching. You will see others say due to poor talent. The truth is somewhere me between. Ireland was not a bad GM. He was rather average. So the talent was, as well. Philbin was not a very good coach last season. He was rather average, maybe a tad below last season. I think that is how you arrive at 8-8 with wins over pretty damn good teams and then losses against pretty bad teams.
Good coaching is about one thing: consistency. A good coach doesn't beat all those playoff teams and then lose to Thad ****ing Lewis twice in a season, the winless Bucs (at the time), and the Jets and a horrible rookie QB.
I find both sides that only blame one side hysterical. So Ireland gave Philbin this super talented team and Philbin just was in so far over his head that him and his coaching staff were incompetent? Or Ireland gave Philbin crap players and Philbin coached us to close to a playoff spot? How about EVERYONE is to blame. The GM..the coaches....the front office...the scouting department...the trainers. When do we stop picking sides and agendas and just getbthis thing right? We have way too many writers....posters...fans...NFL people who are bathing in total negativity and almost getting sick pleasure out of it. The views on almost EVERY article or post written is so slanted that it almost becomes unreadable.
This makes very little sense. Get rid of the guy who is your potential replacement next year??? The guy who you beat out for the job? The guy who was never offered the job? The guy who is closely associated with the GM who you just fired? The first guy Hickey probably told Ross would have to be replaced if he took the job? That guy? Potential replacement? How about he does what almost EVERY GM does and brings in a guy he knows, likes and trusts?
Yea ok well have some ****ing class and tell the guy to his face. Good god when no one wants to deal with them people will scream why, boo hoo the media hates us. Well then stop giving them the damn bullets to shoot you with Ross lets the guy find out through the media...really....what a piece of crap he is
First of all if that is true...I would agree with you. However the Dolphins have already come out and refuted the report...so who knows where the truth lies. Seems like a tug of war in the media back and forth that in the end...always makes us look bad
in other news Lamar Thomas announced that he is running for president of these United States and Abdul Jabar former Fins Running back will be his running mate . their slogan is " we have faces that only a mother and a head football coach could love." I am so excited because Wanny will have his taxes raised ; well , how do you love that thought ? gotta love it don't you .
TB wasn't a winless team due to talent. In the first 4 weeks they have losses by 1, 2, and 3 points. Games they could have easily won. The week before they played us they lose in Seattle by 3 points. Seattle's smallest margin of victory at home all year. After beating us, the next two weeks they beat Atlanta and Detroit. They were young and inconsistent, but there is a lot of talent on that roster IMO.
Now you're changing the subject from his learning he got fired through the media, which was refuted. He did find out Hickey got the GM job over him through the media though. Two different things. As for the escort, it is common practice in the corporate world for fired employees to be escorted out of the building. You carry on like only the Dolphins could do such a heinous thing.
Put the Wild Turkey back into the liquor cabinet and slowly back away. Brush your teeth and go to bed and sleep it off.
This is one of the things that needed to change, the Parcellian era was anti media, it's like whenever the media is involved they go full ******. Gaine leaving is a blow, he had a good eye for talent, Hickey has the right to put his guys in place, however the Draft is not that far away, neither is FA, what I suspect is coming may not be pleasant.
Yeah as soon as I heard the circumstances - that he was the only one not offered the job, I said to myself, he was going to be gone very soon. You can't take an ego hit that bad and stay there and have anyone in the organization respect you.
unless they get some fire back, I absolutely could see them going 6-10 or worse. People those two games are a wake up call to those that think Philbin has some kind of magic fairy dust he can sprinkle on and the team will be a lot better. I think that was more reflective of the way it will be next year as I think most teams approached Miami in that they underestimated them, and overlooked them. When we had to do it, when it was on the line, when teams had to beat us, look what has happened. I think back to that Tennessee game in 2012, and to the two at then end last year - all 3 games were big situations for us, and all 3 times it was the same result - a complete blowout by the other team.
Gaines departure is simply the fallout from Ireland, and likely his ill-fated attempt to compete for the GM position. Sure his fate was ultimately left for Hickey to decide, but at that point its hardly Hickeys fault he's now gone. In fact I read the decision to part ways was mutual. As for the manner in how Gaines was let go, I felt Sparano endured a shamefully less dignified firing, yet that inconsiderate ousting, was completely overlooked. They allowed Sparano to come in, stand at the podium before his regular Monday news conference, and field questions about reports that he would be fired. Completely oblivious of his impending fate, he said no. "I want to coach against the Buffalo Bills this week. That's my sole focus," he said. He learned of his termination shortly after the news conference convened.
The 3 reasons we ended up 8-8, IMO. - Its not that the talent was poor, its that the talent was a poor fit for Philbin to implement his entire system. We had the players to play his system against the Steelers & Pats, we didn't have the players to play his system against the Bills. - Sherman was a poor OC. He called plays based on his experience and not on the game/opponent that was happening in front of him. - The team lacked veteran leadership. The rah-rah stuff that many think is an important part of being a HC is actually more frequent and more effective coming from veteran teammates. I think, as fans and humans, we want to boil it down to one thing like Ireland or Philbin, etc. Few problems have one factor and this is no different, yet here we are people breaking into 2 different camps, the Bad Talent and the Bad Coaching factions. Oh well, it will be another long offseason.
As harsh as I was with and disappointed as I was in his hire, you HAVE to give Hickey a chance. Period. That is only fair.
Now that is reflection on Ross. That is totally classless if true. You tell your candidates privately, and thank them for interviewing and then release it to the media. My question is, why did they even let him interview in the 1st place ? Why didn't they bomb him out the same day as Ireland ? That would maybe have given more clarity to the people that did interview. We might have actually gotten one of them.
I wasn't excited about his hire either, but still am excited about this offseason! Let's see what Hickey can do, I think we have a lot of reasons to be optimistic. Tannehill progressing under Lazor's system, Dion Jordan and the other rookies getting more playing time, a remake of the offensive line... we can be a good team this upcoming season if everything falls into place. If Hickey can upgrade our OL and leave the defense about where it is, we can easily get to the playoffs, IMO.
Excellent evaluation on the season.... One of my biggest complaints was the players the team did acquire did not fit the systems (or schemes) that were in place when Philbin and his staff took over. It also doesn't help that the team got rid of its most effective leader without having another to take his place. Hopefully this issue are addressed THIS offseason, but for Dolphins fans...hope springs eternal...
Yeah this was a Loria type move. Anything without class. I thought Ross had more class than this - but it's more and more evident that unless Ross is gone soon, this franchise will be so poorly run he'll never recoup his investment and will hang on to them longer. I feel sorry for us, we deserve better, but it seem fate has chosen to let Miami suffer for a lot longer.
Tap, tap, tap dance..... You just can't bring yourself to ever say anything that isn't wishy-washy. Be a man and take a stand for once.
actually I think a lot of it, had to do with us being over looked by those teams. Each one of them had a game shortly before or after our games with them, that in the scale of the season was more important to them. I think we caught all of them at the right moment. I think the last two games is much more reflective of the talent we have on the team. That is Ireland's realm of responsibility.
I have to agree with you on this post. This one is on Ross, if true. You just don't do that kind of thing. People around the league see this **** and remember it.
Of course when I typed that I hadn't read the entire thread yet.....but still if it is, it's just undignified. Why do we not hear this about other organizations ? There has to be a reason. If we find out the "source" was Jeff Ireland then we know he is just continuing his little tantrum he started last week through his personal mouthpiece Salguero.
I've heard mixed reports and if it is true then it does look very bad, but I get the feeling that it isn't or that the truth falls somewhere in between (as with most reports like this)...
Scott Cohen, who interviewed for the Jets GM job and did not get it, was the assistant GM under Mike Tannenbaum. Idzik retained him through the draft and then fired him. It's a cold world and it is not limited to the Miami front office. By the way, Cohen was hired by TB last July as their senior personnel adviser (newly created title).
I don't think anyone implied he was fired through the media. Beasley's report stated he met Hickey for the first time Wednesday and was told he was fired. Or as the Dolphins like to say - he was mutually parted ways with. I think the PR department might want to look up the definition of the word mutual. I don't think it's that big of a deal. The Dolphins claim they tried to contact him about Hickey getting the job but couldn't get in touch, which I find hard to believe, but whatever. Beasley's source for this story is almost certainly Gaine (or his agent). He's probably pissed how things went down and wanted to make Miami look bad one last time.
I agree with you almost totally, but the last point... Gaine has a future still, even tho it's not in Miami at this time. He/his agent likely is NOT the source. That doesn't mean he's not pissed he didn't get the job, but once they passed him over and the fact that there was no real connection between Gaine and Hickey, the writing was on the wall and Gaine knew it as well as anyone. Gaine is not the type to burn any bridges (like Ireland was/is). He's worked too hard for the good rep he has and that type of thing would come back to haunt him... I'm really kind of wondering if Gaine wasn't Beasley ear in the organization ?? Beasley put that out there thinking he'd help his former confidante exact some revenge ?? I guess it doesn't really matter, it's all been refuted as bunk and it's not like Gaine has fired back saying that it was true...
After Ireland was fired -- err, mutually parted ways with -- Jeff Darlington tweeted something that made it obvious that Gaine was his source inside the building. There was just too much in that report for it to not come from Gaine or someone really close to him. I don't think it burns any bridges for him. If anything is makes Gaine look even more sympathetic. Everyone thinks he got a raw deal by getting passed over for the job and now this happens.
