I meant throughout the entire season even though he consistently under performed since last season(2012) and prior. I'm glad we won't have to watch his inability to improve anymore
I fail to see even slight irony...? I honestly have to laugh at the notion that a head coach has to be responsible for every single detail of a players life and if anything goes wrong, it's on him. I'm going to have to look up the press conference where Philbin took responsibility for Chad OchoCinco head butting his own wife. I mean, he's the head coach. Surely he could've looked into Chads puppy dog eyes beforehand and seen the cries for help, right? So its Philbins fault for not stopping that from happening. Smh. Philbin did more than Martins parents FFS. What more do you people want? Lmao.
Wait, I'm checking... still checking... Yep It's still true: if you're in charge, you're responsible. That's the way it works alright.
Unless your a Bills fan. They say it like this, if your in charge, your responsible. Even Bills fans no it.
In all fairness, there were times during the season where he was about our only dependable lineman, which isn't saying much. Besides, given the injuries and lack of depth, I'm not sure benching him would've been a great move, unless the NFL were to allow Tannehill to wear a suit of armor.
I guess i should Google the definition of strawman and link it to you. Coach is responsible for things within his control and knowledge. He's not a magician like your argument wishes he was. He got more help for Martin than his own lawyer parents did. Go outside or something.
So you think the locker room., cafeteria and practice field are areas the coach should have no control knowledge of or responsibility for? What about guidance and direction of the coaching staff? not to mention training evaluation and correction all of which require daily communication and follow up?
Here is the thing. None of the players were afraid of Philbin. They were afraid of Richie or the locker room or even the NFL finding things out. But none of them seemed afraid of Philbin at all and that says something.
@davehydesports 8h Let's see. GM, Off coord, line coach, trainer, Incognito, Pouncey, Jerry all to blame for last year. But coach Joe Philbin? Praise him
I wanted him fired. Even if talent is lacking he had more than enough to beat the Jets and the Bills in the final two games.
The longer this goes on the worse Philbin looks to me. He seems like a nice guy and that he means well but there have already been several breakdowns in coaching under his watch. Besides the scandal the offense and defense simply underperformed this year. I don't think he was ready for this job. I'm so upset that we didn't go after Lovie Smith when he was available. A coach who has brought a team to a super bowl? Even if he didn't win that's closer than the Phins have been in over 30 years.
It's almost impossible to say how good/bad Philbin did last year because we don't know the team's organizational structure behind the scenes. Ultimately though, it all falls on his shoulders at the end of the day, so I think this coming year will either make or break him since there are no more valid excuses.
I haven't read his contract, but if there's a difference between "with cause" and "without cause," he had one. What Philbin did was save Turner's income stream until he can catch on somewhere else. Sounds like someone I'd like to work for.
From Greg Bedard (remember him?) from the MMQB website: http://mmqb.si.com/2014/02/21/nfl-players-on-what-joe-philbin-didnt-know/?eref=sihp Various NFL players explain why they think Joe Philbin "didn't know". Kaleb Thornhill...is he the next domino to fall? I can see why Philbin has said what he has, right or wrong, I get it, kind of... That said, I have some serious doubts as to whether or not he's the best coach for the Dolphins moving forward purely from a football perspective. I don't think he is, but maybe he'll prove me wrong?
Philbin is going to get his second chance like it or not. Although the more we find out, the more I believe Philbin's 2014 will resemble Sparano's 2011. A coach whose job status was questionable at the end of the season who went on to do absolutely nothing to prove he was worth retaining. I hope I'm wrong. Unless there proves to be something to these Harbaugh / 49er divorce rumors...
Wow, an article where the author actually did some research and quoted real people. I think Philbin's style of management is to set the overall vision and tone for the team and then let the Asst Coaches run their units. This style can work well if you have the right people under you. Philbin's biggest mistake was hiring Sherman. Not that Sherman is a poor OC (IMO he is average and his familiarity with Tannehill did make for a smoother transition) but that Philbin trusted Sherman too much and gave him too much say in hiring the next tier of offensive coaches.
Philbin's biggest weakness right there; he doesn't have as many of the right people under him as he needs to have for this to work. There are some: Kacy Rodgers, Darren Rizzi, Phil McGeoghan. But there are/were also: Mike Sherman, Jim Turner, Zac Taylor, Ken O'Keefe, Chris Mosley, and George Edwards. Plus Richie Incognito's being on the leadership council is a travesty and something Philbin could have and should have prevented, but I think when you are the CEO type, it's hard to step on the players' toes; which would have been the case had he done that.
