No link. Just saw it on the NFLN scroll.

Does this affect Matt Moore at all? Thoughts?

I think it calls Matt Moore into question in some regard. I mean, unless Pat Devlin is just cool cashing checks for preseason games, you'd have to figure he wanted an opportunity to compete somewhere for at least a backup job.

They just placed an exclusive rights tender on Devlin; meaning they can match anything he's offered.

Exclusive rights tenders mean that the player cannot sign anywhere else for the year. Basically he's signed for a one year deal.

I'm not thrilled right now with the idea of Delvin as our #2, but cutting Moore and saving 4 mil sounds appealing. That money can be used to find a quality backup QB AND a solid player at another position.

Philbin seems to have faith......no all that reassuring to be honest but hey he's our coach and he likes the guy. I would think a scenario where Devlin is the backup and we draft someone else to groom.

I hope it doesn't come down to dumping Moore and relying on Devlin. Nice guy ok player, but not ready for prime time, yet if ever....I'm for keeping Moore, even at his current price.... Remember Earl Morrell....

I think Devlin needs to surpass MMoore to earn his spot, he's been here awhile, should know the offense inside and out, he has to improve to remain imo

I think it's time to move Moore, if Ryan gets injured it ain't like Moore gonna take us to the promise land, save 5 mill, get a guard.
, and see what Devlin can do, kid has some guts.

Tannehill still hasn't reached the level of play that Moore showed in 2011.

Can you please rxplain to me how a guy can prove he is reliable without ever getting a chance?

From his college tape I've always liked Devlin and feel he will make a great #2 QB.

What's tannehills salary? Surely we still pay out less than a lot of teams for our three qbs. Is flacco and brees and the mannings not $20M each? Keep Moore and see if there is a trade, unlikely but if some other qb or ours goes down we might get a nibble. He's a very talented back up.

You mean when Moore's gameplan was to chuck it deep into triple coverage and get bailed out by Marshall game after game? He was amazingly lucky that year.

I think you can maybe argue Tannehill still hasn't reached the level of consistency Matt Moore showed that year, but I think Tannehill's best games this year were far better than anything Matt Moore showed in 2011. I'm just going on memory here but I remember a lot of 180 yard 1 or 2 TD games. Good games, but not the type of production a team typically needs from a QB to be successful in today's NFL.

If he looks great in camp and preseason then ok, but we are trying to make the playoffs. If RT is out we want someone experienced and proven than Devlin to fill in and handle the offense.

If we are 8 and 7 and need to win the last game to get in, I would rather not have Devlin making his first career start. At least Moore has shown he can win games.

I'd guarantee Mike Wallace would be dancing a jig if MMoore was doing that for him.

That said, Devlin does need to show more, atm he is not a credible threat to MMoore's job

If you think that is all he did then we were watching two different guys named Matt Moore.

Not sure how much to believe on what gets written out there, but there was some hubbub in the earlier offseason (I believe it was LaCanfora or James Walker, or maybe I just saw Walker link LaCanfora on his blog) that Joe Philbin wanted more competition for Ryan Tannehill this year, and that if Tannehill was struggling, he wouldn't be afraid to replace him (game-by-game basis was my take) with Matt Moore. And then didn't Dennis Hickey have to answer some question akin to this line of thought in one of his first press conferences, where he gave an answer like, "I believe in Ryan Tannehill"?

If any part of that claim has some basis in truth, I don't think Matt Moore is going anywhere. So if we were to see Matt Moore get traded and Devlin take his job as primary back-up, I think we can safely assume LaCanfora (or Walker, whomever) were full of baloney sauce. On the other hand, if Matt Moore and Devlin both stay, apparently we're satisfied with our QB rotation as is, and it will remain to be seen if Philbin has Tannehill on a short leash or not.

On a personal aside, I hope, if that rumor were true, it's not too short a leash. I'm really interested to see Lazor's work with Tannehill and how different the offense might look. It's pretty much "THE HOPE" right now, in my opinion. Regardless of how good or bad you think Ryan Tannehill has been to this point, I think for the 2014 season, you pretty much have to put all your eggs in that basket. If we're going to Matt Moore, I think the season will have been lost, and Philbin will be playing out the string. A lot of folks have wondered on this site, me included, how Tannehill would do after breaking the umbilical with Sherman, and a lot of us expect to see better results. We're going to get that chance.

It was more directed towards the post above mine so people wouldn't be misinformed about the difference between an exclusive rights tender and a restricted tender.

Scary to me thinking about how a QB and a Coordinator spent 4 years together and didn't progress..should be the opposite.

Well, I definitely thought there was some progression from Ryan's rookie to second year, just not as much as I had hoped.

Early in the year, he looked pretty good. And he even made some jaw-dropping plays. When he avoided the rush at the end of the Baltimore Ravens game, rolled out, and hit Brandon Gibson for what I thought was going to be a TD (but Gibson dove instead of catching it in stride)... that was a play that made you look again at the kind of talent he has if he can be consistent in it. Like you, I do think he should run more to get first downs when the opportunities present themselves, and that's something I'm interested in seeing if he does more of that with Lazor. His fumbles went way down in the second half of the year, but that's one other thing he just has to be better about... ball security. The fumble when he took off in the Saints game - ugh! I blame Sherman more for this one (and Clabo), but the fumble at the end of the first Buffalo game just CAN NOT HAPPEN. We were ahead. Even though I attribute most of the blame to Sherman/Clabo, Tannehill isn't totally exonerated. He has to not fumble in that situation. If you notice Williams whipping Clabo, just go down before he gets to you. I know we're dealing in split seconds here, but it wasn't the QBs blind side - he needs to notice that stuff in his periphery even when having his eyes downfield. Punt the ball, and make a rookie second string QB, who isn't know for his pure passing, drive the ball the length of the field to beat you. You never know: one play in a season can be the difference in making the playoffs and not.

Still, I remain in the Tannehill camp and think he can be really good. Scouts say that there are some footwork issues that can help his deep accuracy, and CK wrote about how play timing also affected some of that. At this point, I think his biggest issues are: 1) deep accuracy; 2) feel in the pocket; and 3) ball security. Even if # 2 remains a problem (i.e. he just doesn't have the instinctive feel that great QBs usually do), better protection at least mitigates that some. So does a running game. If it's true that his deep accuracy can be somewhat improved, and the Dolphins build an O-line with better protection/running game, I think Tannehill takes a big jump. Adding some running for first downs and more of a threat to run, especially on third downs, would be an additional boon for our offense and Tannehill, himself.

Anyway, chasing rabbits there. Sorry to derail the Devlin thread. Back to that.

Matt Moore isn't going anywhere, I think we would've cut him by now. Also Barry Jackson wrote in the Herald that Hickey is a Moore fan and wanted to sign him in Tampa.

I'm fine with Devlin as the backup. I think that Moore money can be better spent elsewhere. The truth is Devlin has looked about as good as any of our other QBs every preseason and it seems like we have moved the ball better with him than with the others. He got more college experience than Tannehill did and was equivalently productive in it, so if Tannehill was ready to be a starter as a rookie, Devlin is ready to be a 2nd QB after a few years in the league. I haven't seen him look rattled or like he didn't belong.

Just cutting Matt Moore and Dimitri Patterson would give the team $50M+ cap space.

Can't cut Moore. Season over if Tanny goes down, which he well could w/out better pass pro. Devlin is a project.

I like Matt Moore a lot and think he hasn't been given a fair shot at starting. Still we need picks badly. Tannehill is at least competent as a starter and if we get a decent oline he might be able to take us into the playoffs. I would be fine if we traded Matt Moore for a good draft pick. Especially if it is to a team he might actually get a chance to start on.
