So, say Ellerbe is so desired that multiple teams bidding drives his price up from a vet minimum salary to a that plus $1 mil signing bonus. Then we'd still have $9.6 mil or so in dead money against cap. It would make more sense to keep him as a backup for one season.
Spikes is not a good comparison at all. He at least does one thing, stuff the run, at a very high level. Of course multiple teams would want him. As for Jackson, it would be better to wait and see what he signs for. Also by cutting him, I doubt Cleveland took an $11.6mil cap hit.

I understand the concept of free agency. I did not need an elementary level primer in how it all works. Not all players to enter free agency have multiple teams bidding on their services. Just because Jackson does, and Spikes will, does not mean the level of interest in Ellerbe would be close to the same.

The impediment to cutting Dannell Ellerbe is not his dead money. Not when you've got $40 million of cap space burning a whole in your pocket and a fully manipulatable year to year salary cap.

The impediment to cutting Dannell Ellerbe is the fact that you may owe him an additional $6 million whether he plays for you or doesn't play for you. At that point you might as well have him play for you.

However, if you might NOT owe him that $6 million after all...

Dead money lessens the amount of cap room the team has to address other needs, does it not?

I'm neutral on the move to be honest. Miami will not have ot pay Dannell Ellerbe $6 million of guaranteed salary in 2014. They will have to pay Ellerbe whatever he doesn't make from his new team, and that includes signing bonus he receives as part of the new contract. Whatever compensation he makes in 2014 offsets the $6 million Miami owes. That's what I've been told by two agents.

Ellerbe made big plays? I somehow missed those. Dansby is the far superior player

It would be great simply so I could say the name "D'Qwell" a lot more often.

I used to love saying "Adewale Ogunleye" with the Afro-Cuban pronunciation. Miss him just for that.

Oh yeah? What game changing or game saving plays did he make? Are you referring to the last game of the season against the Jets when he got trucked by Geno Smith at the end if the second quarter? That play was Ellerbe's season in a nutshell. Slow to read, slower to react and missing a tackle

Looks like there will be a bit of a LB shake up if D'Qwell Jackson is signed. Ellerbe is probably better as an OLB anyway who can cover while Misi can play more over the strong side against blocking TEs. Seems like the team is not happy with Wheeler. I get the feeling that even if they can't sign Jackson that they will plan to sign an ILB anyway to make these changes.

His head was on a swivel most of the year, do recall a game changing Int, also recall him being erased trying to fill at the POA

I'd personally prefer a classic MLB, that is a Miami Tradition that we've not filled since Zach Thomas left yrs ago.

Ellerbe is better as a 3-4 ILB, he's a good LB who was basically playing out of position. You could say the same about Soliai, Starks, and Wake. Dion Jordan certainly looks more like a 3-4 OLB than anything else. Seems Irish wanted to run a 3-4 while Philbin and Coyle didn't.

Youre right, he'd have a much better shot of starting in Indy.

I actually think its a poor contract. 11 million guaranteed for a soon to be 31 year old LB that has struggled mightily the last 2 years against the run and has so far proven to be a poor fit in a 3-4

Exactly. Lot of money for a past his prime LB. Glad Hickey passed since that's what the market for him was.

Yeah, he picked the Colts because of the teams interested, they are just the BEST. Money offered had nothing to do with it. If you think he picked the Colts just because Pagano is the coach or that they maybe better on paper, I have a bridge to sell you.

I'm a bit disturbed by the Barry Jackson report that D'Qwell Jackson would be immediately penciled in a starting role rather than competing. He's another guy who doesn't take on blockers well and is better in zone than man coverage. He's in the same vein as Wheeler and Ellerbe, except just without the skill as a blitzer.

This definitely needed its own thread, instead of being mentioned in the already existing thread about Jackson. In fact, we should probably make yet another new thread for the details of said contract.
