I like the set up Mach has for FA. Re-Sign process needs work but overall FA is pretty smooth.

I'd be curious if you had any ideas for the re-sign. We've kicked around a bunch so far and have a few we like.

I'll say this about FA though and stuff for next year: Bids are going up to 10 likely to match the old 10/48, dead money is staying, and once per day is staying.

I was the only GM to bid on him. Thought I was going to steal him for that.

I think the re-sign period really kills FA as it removes the top players. Probably reduce how many people you can re-sign and place a penalty for FA on a team that chooses to try and re-sign.

There's going to be a reduction on offers to keep your own for sure.

The idea was to make it part of FA in a revamping of FA, so it was supposed to "kill" it more or less. I think it needs to be balanced a bit though.

With 10 I don't even know why you would put a restriction on the number of bids. Pointless arbitrary number that might as well be unlimited.

Maybe the better option might be to not run 2 games next year and overtax some people playing both games, and splitting the pool of available players causing so many inactive.

It worked fine for years... we wanted to try the 5/24 method a year or two ago so we did.

10 works if you put a big penalty on re-signing. So revoke 5 bids for 7 days or longer. Still might not matter due to 48 hour bidding process but having 5 less bids early would hurt.

You guys aren't getting it. My point was with 10. Why bother with 10. Just make it unlimited. The 10 part serves no purpose ;p

48 hours though. I find 24 tedious as it is.....don't know how you guys put up with 48 especially with sniping. That would drive me over the wall.

Because unlimited would be a pain. Then you can't penalize teams that use the re-sign option.

Right now 24 hours on 5 bids is beyond painful. Especially when only have the league is really active. You see guys go for far less because less people have an open bid. Sniping hasn't happened yet but I don't see why it would as the re-sign process removed a lot of the top tier guys now its really about low key signings with a few solid players.

I did in theory but its horrible when more than half the league isn't around and its just 9-10 teams actively participating. 48 hours gives those that only check the site a few times a day a chance to catch up, also extends FA a bit.

Which brings me back to the original point of not splitting the available pool of players into 2 separate games. If anything that is the elephant in the room.

As I understand it TP GML wasn't interested in dead money. I could be wrong on that front so maybe someone else can explain.

Strategy is involved, but that still leaves too many players going for too cheap b/c there aren't enough bids to go around, especially with some GMs not being as active. There were a handful of players I would've bid on but didn't have an available bid to do so. The FA process shouldn't be about stealing players for the minimum just b/c everyone else's bids are tied up; it should be about each player going for his max value, whomever GM it is that wants to pay it. As much "strategy" is involved in 5/24, there's probably even more involved when you don't luck out and steal a 3 to 4 million dollar player for 495k [cough cough- Darren McFadden]. You'd have to be a lot more careful with your bidding.

Well it wasn't from me ;p I don't recall ever seeing a thread here discussing it. I've been pushing the dead cap here a few times in our discussion threads along the way this season.

I still say that the underpaid guys is a minor issue. Balances out the rediculous overpays (*cough*Graham*cough*). I mean even Earl didn't go for much more in the dead cap league. I won't mind the 10 bids thing as long as the dead cap is there to prevent a roster purge.

here's an idea for next time... just throwing **** against the wall here to see what sticks...

Have the free agent pool staggered or tiered based on a player's perceived value. I have a website I have used for a long time, I won't say which one it is, it's a secret.. :shifty: but they rank free agents, all of them (pretty much). So you'd basically have part one of free agency be for the first 1/4 (as an example) of the free agent pool. Part 2, would involve the second 1/4... and so on and so forth. There would be unlimited bids, each team could place as many bids as they like. Does Ebay restrict you? no, why should we? :shifty: You know your budget, if you've done your homework right, you'll know where to spend the appropriate money. This is closer to how NFL free agency works. The big money is spent early on (the first two days or so). Then the money starts to dwindle. If a player isn't bid on in part 1, they drop down to part 2 and are included in that group's list of players.

A little tweak one could make is say the min bid on a tier 1 player starts at a higher amount than the min bid for the lesser tiered players. Say $4m or whatever.. You'd basically allow for 4 days for someone to make a bid on a tier 1 player and then if no bid, he drops down to tier 2. The time goes on for tier 1 until the players have a bid where nobody matches for 24 hours (same as usual in that regard). And then tier 2 starts, same thing. Maybe the min bid is $2.5m, or whatever. After each tier, you'd obviously reassess where you are in relation to the cap and your needs. Are there going to be some "steals" in tiers 3 or 4? probably, but at least the market is set organically rather than a player missing out on his value.

Who are you to determine where a player's perceived value is? That's what I hate about someone setting tiers. 4 re-sign bids, 2 high, 2 low. The high ones must start at 5MM and in order to use the low ones you must use both high ones. This allows separation and everyone to tier their own guys more or less and leaves a healthy FA pool.

    -puts down two pennies-

Watching both leagues this year they both lack certain things and neither really felt right to me but I've mentioned it numerous times to several people. In terms of free agency the 10 bids/48 hours prevents a lot of steals because most GMs don't need to sign more than 10 mid to major contracts and it allows open bids to be used to prolong the bidding on certain players for other GMs to take notice of the player or allow them to open a bid and get in on the action.

One of my strategies was to get a young guy who was up and coming with half my bids like Brett Keisel or Aaron Kampman back in the day I'd get for the minimum until they got more press. There is a big difference between unlimited and 10 bids, trust me if there was a GM like me with unlimited bids free agency would never end. Another benefit is that you get more bidding wars and I've been in a few over the years like me and VO going after Jason Brown, who I won for $11 million I think. I don't mind the 5 bids either but it has its drawbacks with a brisk FA period where if you wait long enough will get the left overs who can turn into steals. With 10 bids you can see the different tiers of players, with 5 bids it tends to be marquee players and the other guys.

My ideal FA would be blind bidding where you can include contract terms, like promised starter role and bonus (which can be translated to dead money or cap penalties if done on a 1 year basis). Any commish will tell you that it takes too much time because they have to go through every bid individually, but it would be best served by a committee keeping track offers. If I was on the committee I'd release information on who is in the lead through FA articles like a quick Peter Kiper tweet or something to that extent. That would allow the GMs to go back into negotiations.

One bid would start a 24 hour clock, where if no other bid came in the player agrees to a contract with the only team that offered him a deal.

However with Jimmy Graham let's say 6 teams offer him a contract the clock would start at 24 hours, but each bid would increase the clock by 12 hours (or less) and extend FA on marquee players while shrewd (cheap) GMs would consider offering the mid to lower level guys offers first, which could lead to steals because someone expected to get a lot of offers (like a cut John Sullivan) only gets one or two big ones and signs rather quickly.

Of course you'd need guys who just want to act like the players and be in the league but not running a team.

It would be more confusing buta quick idea I just had on the throne at work :shifty:

What if bids less than x amount (1 million?) didn't count towards your bid total? Or you got a seperate amount of those bids.
