http://www.palmbeachpost.com/news/s...ns-in-talks-with-free-agent-offensive-/nfCdz/ If we lock down Shelley and Strief life is good.
We might have to go after a couple of corners early in the draft....signing Finnegan would seem to be a desperation move if we do it. I'm kind of surprised we haven't really even been mentioned to be looking at any Rbs, maybe we are waiting to see who is available cheap later.
Grimes Taylor Davis Wilson Add a vet and draft a guy but these 2nd years men need to step up. I'm an idealbworld grimes man's his spotbwith jamar at #2 and moving inside when Davis comes in on nickel. We will see
that would give us 3-4 good linemen. definitely good enough to dramatically improve protection for Tannehill. I'm not a fan either of signing Finnegan, but I see him as insurance only. I bet we draft another DB and hopefully our 2nd year guys step it up and Finnegan gets cut in training camp.
Talked about the corner issue earlier in the Carroll thread, thought that should've been a move we made for various reasons. Oh well. Finnegan coming here would suck. Hickey, recently, has a strong track record of evaluating and getting value at RB (Blount UDFA, Martin, James 6th round, Rainey waivers). It's a strength of his, and I think he realizes it. No urgency. Very down with Shelley Smith. Big Rams fan friend of mine, who I trust, says he's a very solid player, certainly worth the attention he's getting from a few teams.
Finnegan is still getting paid on his old contract. He was injured over the last two years. His price is not going to be much. He is likely to sign a prove it contract and if it doesn't work out there will likely be little cap impact if any. And I would doubt it would mean the Dolphins are finished at the position. I am sure he is a smart guy and knows his situation. If not, I would hope Miami moves on. But I wouldn't throw the baby out with the bathwater.
We just did that last year. No way again! We have Taylor and Davis. Finnegan will likely be a nickel CB and if we signed him it would be a 1 year deal. Honestly, I also like Michael Thomas as a prospect. But, we need depth at CB and Finnegan is not bad for that. Obviously would be nice to have a bonafide starter there but I don't see it coming in the draft. There may be other cuts also. Or we may look at other FAs out there after their price comes down.
Really feel like we need to sign Shelley Smith. Good sign that he has visited two teams and not been signed - he likely overestimated his value and may be coming down to earth a bit. if we show some love and a bit more than he was offered elsewhere - we might land him. Would be a bonafide starter and upgrade over Jerry for sure. Not huge on Strief and think he may cost too much. But, heck, if we got he and Smith that would be huge. Even if we just got Smith that would be 3 starters and perhaps we can land one starter in one of the first two rounds of the draft.
I'd be thrilled with Smith and Streif manning the right side of our line. It would also open up more possibilities for us at #19. Drafting an OG/OT wouldn't be a must there.
Exactly, and remember Hickey drafts Bpa,id be shocked if he signs a Rb cause he has damn good record drafting or gettin udfa like our bro said.Albert-Shelley-Pouncey-Thomas-StriefSounds good to me..i believe Thomas could beca Averaflgecto Pro bowl Rg Dallas Thomas can Pull yall
Being Mr. Negative here, it appears as tho Zach Streif has another/other destinations in mind. We've apparently reached out for him twice now ?? And he still hasn't come down here ?? Hmmmm.... The indications are that Smith is more sure than Streif, but he's still not here yet ?? I guess I'm getting a bit antsy about the OL....I keep seeing the OL being treated like TE 3 yrs ago, WR 2 yrs ago and LT last year by the FO....
I genuinely don't understand the comparison to seasons past in regards to unit holes. We are actually targeting that unit right now. We got one of the top players at the most important position on that unit and we're in talks with a top guard and reaching out to the best RT on the market. In the past that much was not done for any of those units.
Rotoworld says here that Strief has been unavailable this week for some function in Cincinnati. That's for all teams, not just the Dolphins. That snippet also says he's interested in at least discussing his contract situation with the Dolphins. While it does seem his initial choice is to stay in New Orleans, the Saints' cap space may prohibit them from giving Strief the contract he wants. Enter Miami. If we can pony up a contract more to his liking, we may have a couple of fairly elite pass protecting bookends. Couple that with a center that's pretty good at pass protecting, too, and we're a world away from where we were last season at the tackle spots in the beginning of the year. So... crossing fingers there. According to the PBP, Shelley Smith arrived in Miami last night. I would guess he's still there this morning. Whereas the three players mentioned above are more pass protecting types, Smith is an elite run blocker. If the Dolphins can sign him and find another mauler somewhere (on team/FA/draft), we have the makings of a pretty decent line, and much better than last year's version... one that, it can truly be said, kept us out of the playoffs.
There's not a lot of options at Right Tackle this off-season, unfortunately. Not like at Left Tackle. Strief performed at a high level last year, but after that it's guys who are OK or outright bad. You've got the Titans cutting David Stewart, whom has been good but has health issues. Then you've got a bunch of guys who are a combination of old and questionable performers, like Tony Pashos, Tyson Clabo, Jeremy Trueblood, Eric Winston, Ryan Harris, etc. If you can't sell Strief, I'm not sure you don't call up Winston Justice or even get Tyson Clabo back. He played well late in the year.
Yeah, Tyson Clabo would probably be my fall-back plan. The devil you know, and all that. And then someone in the draft, but I wouldn't make it a priority at #19. Hopefully, we can persuade Strief, and it doesn't come down to any of those other guys you mentioned.
I guess I'm a bit antsy because he HAS been here since last night and hasn't signed yet and is mulling over other offers...We've seen that happen in the past... yeah, Hickey isn't Ireland, but we are pretty close to desperation along the OL...
As noted, Smith is mulling offers, but I think we need to keep this guy from leaving town. If he leaves town, I don't think we land Smith.
Whether we land Smith or not, I think we need to get Strief in town in the next day or so. If we don't land Smith, we may need to pay an extra premium on Strief.
We should give Ryan Harris a look. Not a great run blocker but he's really solid in pass protection and in the screen game.
What I can see, though, is maybe going after ILB, if Mosley is there at 19 or a good LB falls to our 2nd pick, butI think that's the only defensive position we might address in the early rounds of the draft.
Maybe safety. Maybe. I think OL; Offensive Skill positions (RB/TE/WR); and LB are going to be higher priorities than CB or safety. Obviously, if you are looking at BPA and feel a guy is a stud - go for it. But, that is more likely in round 1. Less and less likely in 2-3-4 ...
You have to go through Denver or New England to win the AFC, we've seen teams in the AFC make some big moves on CBs. I expect them to draft them early and often as well.
Calvin Pryor pleaseeee if we get a right tackle in free agency. I'd hate to waste a 1st on a guard if we have atleast one guard spot filled up. Guards are a dime a dozen and can get a good one in the 2nd or third. However if we don't pick up another tackle in free agency then oline in the first is almost the certain pick.
Let's get mckinne back as a insurance starter and draft Hurst or mewhort in the 3rd round to compete for starting right tackle. Sign a couple more low price guards like wade smith and davin Joseph to compete for starting guard and depth. Then we can let the draft fall to us. MLB is the one major hole I see we need to fill early. Mobley in the first or Borland in the second. As for the other spot I would like to shore is RB. Sign MJD to a prove it deal and let Hickey work his late round magic Hill from LSU or Storm johnson from UCF are my sleeper picks.
You also counter that with a front that can create pressure without committing an extra defender too blitz. Hence? Dion Jordan? Stay in the weight room and become what we all had hoped you would (Aldon Smith)
If we signed McKinnie he would be only a backup to Albert. Nothing else. For the veteran minimum, not saying that isn't a bad idea.
Which player would you guys prefer to play RT. Strief not coming got my doubt's Zach Martin will be there at 19
Pretty much every mock I"ve seen shows him being there, just not sure he is who I would take at 19 depending on who is left on the board.
