I'd "overpay" a little for Strief, if necessary. I think adding him frees us up in so many different ways in terms of the rest of FA and the draft. Getting the 3 most important positions on the OL filled with Pro Bowl-level vets before the draft would be a great thing. One more big move before going into the bargain bin.

Pass protection wasn't horrible, but the run blocking was terrible in the last few games, we couldn't run AT ALL, which made us very predictable and one dimensional.

True what Dupree said...you can't put it all on one season. Ireland/Aponte left us in good position this year, and it would be good if we continue to remain one of the top teams with cap space.

I think Hickey is starting to get some tunnel vision regarding the OL. He just needs to step back a bit and look at the big picture. NE ran the ball 46 times for 233 yds. to destroy the Colts in the playoffs. The following week against Denver, they rushed the ball only 16 times and had 3 pts going into the 4th qtr and Brady managed only 266 yds passing.

With the carry over, it doesn't really matter if they are front or backloaded.

I don't think we would be severely hindered in the next year or two of signing players.

    1) Even if we overpay a bit for a couple of guys at this point, add in the rookie contract needs, we will still have extra cap $$ (we are at $25 m in space after the initial flurry) and some of that can be pushed forward to give space next year.

    2) The cap is increasing faster than expected and we should be able to handle larger numbers in the next couple of years and still have space to sign a significant impact player or two. But, I think our team is still young; we will still need to hit some draft picks.

Who are the guys on the team that are stars that need to be retained? Wake? (I think we can keep him; even franchise him if necessary but he may be aging two years from now that we decide to release him). Pouncey? We can actually get him into a long-term deal and bring some cap relief when his deal comes up. Tannehill? Another one we can sign in 2016 to a longer term deal and get cap relief.

Certainly, we will need to draft some LBs and need a RB or two. But, it's not like we are loaded with superstars who are going to kill us if they leave (unless we start winning big - but then, that's a great problem).

So, 1) Don't let Smith leave the building today. Over pay him (he's not going to get a massive deal even being overpaid because he is a G).
    2) Strief is off the table at this point but there are still a couple of other OGs and lower-end RTs that we could get cheaper and need to at least to be competitive. I like Donald Penn as a RT option and we should be able to get him at a good price after a tough year.
    3) Get after a WR (James Jones is the logical choice there). This could come at some expense but not a cap breaker either.
    4) Unless we went big for a CB (D.R-Cromartie or Thurmond) - which we might do if we can get Smith under contract and we don't spend that $$ on Strief - we can get a vet in at a smaller deal and that protects us in case the young guys fail.
    5) The RB market is nothing special - unless we have an eye on CJ2K - but they are looking for a trade and we don't have ammunition.

The reality is, there are not a ton of big priced free agents left at positions of need for Miami (unless you count CB). So, overpaying some mid-level-salaried, plug and play, guys could be a great move.

Not to go back n forth.....but you do know guys can be loyal to their current team right? Especially when they have one of the best coaches, qbs, and home fans in the league. Not everyone signs somewhere besides Miami because, "**** the Dolphins".....

He played RT as a freshman in college and has been a LT ever since. So, I guess it's possible. I wonder how he'd be as a LG.

If he is healthy he and Grimes can really be a heck of a combo. It will be good to have one good physical corner and Grimes.

When a team has a receiver who can get off the line very quickly, having a guy like Finnegan is good in order to jam the receiver at the line. He's good at that.

Well I don't mind signing Finnegan but at that price if true, it makes me wonder why we didn't secure Nolan Carrol.

No. Because he hasn't been able to do that in several years. And then he has to try and catch up, and he can't run like he used to either. I'm not trolling, but I am thrilled you signed him. Keeps the Jets from making a mistake. So thank you and good luck.

On Mike & Mike this a.m., Adam Schefter was saying that DRC walked away from essentially the same contract Talib took with the Broncos. After Talib signed, they rescinded the contract. Looks like DRC either REALLY miscalculated or is looking for something even bigger than Talib. Got any idea what the Jets are planning to offer?
