Carolina doesn't have a huge salary to a QB. But they're in cap trouble. Why? Because of horrible contracts they can't get out of.

So yes, point is they aren't horrible contracts. Any of them could be gone after this year.

If we simply stop thinking of Wallace as a #1 WR and just a guy we had to spend $$ on to create big plays and if Tanny can develop accuracy, Wallace will be getting 10 TDs a season. Everyone can say "Wallace needs to fight for the ball better," but the reality is, that's just not who he is. I think the more RT hits him in stride, the more confidence he'll get. But he's not a "create my own catches" type WR. It is what it is. if RT is going to be a true franchise QB, he has to hit the deep throws with great accuracy most of the time. And, he is not doing so. Until he does, the Dolphins won't be milking the potential that is there.

I think the LB contracts were worse simply because they performed so poorly.

Both of them, though, will be gone after next year, imo, unless they shock (Ellerbe could but I just doubt it).

The benefit of cutting Wheeler after the 2014 season is almost nothing. Why not keep him around as a backup, even if the team replaces him as a starter? I just don't get the extreme urge to purge. I understand that we'd get a sizable bump from cutting Ellerbe, even if there would be a big dead money hit as well. All said though, unless the team goes on a spending spree, we're going to have a bunch of carryover into next season again, and money to spend, with only Pouncey and Odrick as notable players to resign.

Considering Delmas's questionable durability, it would be very smart to re-sign Clemons. $3-3.5 mil for one year should get it done.

Wheeler would have $4.2M in dead money if he's cut after 2014; his cap number is $4.4M. Ellerbe is the big one. Cap number of $9.85M with zero in dead money if he's cut.

Walter Thurmond signed a 1 year deal for $3.5 M.

I'd have preferred him to Finnegan and the cost would have likely been in the same park.

But, I'd like to shift the discussion to WR. I am puzzled that we are not looking at WRs … maybe we will … but I would have liked to at least kick the tires with a couple of these guys (James Jones is the obvious one).

Just looking over the WR position:

    1) Wallace - even if we disagree on his productivity/cost/etc. he's a dolphin and we know what we have here.
    2) Hartline (I) - had a solid year. But, coming off a knee injury at the end of the year and will struggle to do much this spring. Should be good to go in camp.
    3) Rishard Matthews - did a decent job taking over for Gibson after his injury. I like him. He's tough over the middle and makes some good catches. But, I don't think he has big play potential. He's really a middle of the pack #4 WR in the NFL - that's not bad, but not great.
    4) Brandon Gibson (I) - coming off season ending knee injury. Was having a decent year. I think he and Matthews are similar in that they will make a tough catch over the middle. They are reliable but not going to scare anyone. Gibson won't be in any off-season work and will also struggle, imo, to be at full speed the year after his injury. He already was not a fast player.
    5) Armon Binns (I) - has never really made it or demonstrated himself to be able to play in the regular season even though he's flashed potential in camps. Also coming off a bad injury. Nothing can be relied on here other than wishful thinking.
    6) Marlon Moore - has made the dreaded shift from prospect to journeyman. Just not going to do anything different. He is what we thought he was.

This is not going to strike fear into anyone or garner any more big plays. The Gibson signing was decent but he's just a middle-of-the-pack guy.

I'd have added a vet to this mix.

I would love to target a WR in the draft, but with two OL spots still virtually empty … difficult to do.

Hickey did well early on, but I think he's just not getting enough done to fill in empty slots. He didn't go hard after Asomoah or Schwartz. Beadles was both overpaid and over-rated (imo). Had he shored up another spot on the OL I think we could give strong consideration to a WR in round 1. Not sure we can at this point unless the Saints just can't land Strief and he decides to open up to other teams.

Saints have signed Strief. Oh well, suppose it was a long-shot anyway considering his preference to stay a Saint, but don't know where we're going to go from here at RT.

Saints announce they've signed RT Zach Strief, ending remote possibility that he'd have change of heart and visit Miami.

    Yuck.

Maybe Winston at a pinch, in the hope his ex-OL coach can turn the years back, but none of them get the juices flowing.

I agree. But perhaps that move would show lack of conviction in decision to sign Delmas and that is not preferred. Although, the Delmas contract is very friendly, so even if he does not beat out Clemons, it's not a big deal.

I'm okay w/ any of those, but Mckinnie has to be able to play RT. I'd take Clabo as he was solid 2nd half of season. Winston might be best of the three.

OL coaches, as in plural. Winston also played under Asst OL coach Bicknell in 2012. Between the two of them, and considering Winston did pretty well for both, it should be a match made in heaven. :)

He might fit well. With our new OL coach he should know whether the guy would be someone we should consider.

The one thing I don't want to do is lolligag around like we did the last two years. We talked to OTs for weeks on end last year, never signed McKinnie, then had to trade for him. I'm tired of that.

If we can at least get a veteran starter who can compete at the RT spot - then we have the flexibility to go OG in the draft, in case the top 4 OTs are gone.

The only OTs worth 1st round picks (or, I should say, 19 or higher) imo, are the top 4 (Robinson, Lewan, Matthews and Martin). After that, I don't want any one of those guys. Martin is versatile enough he could play OG, imo.

It's easy to hit hard when you lower your helmet as much as he does. Last season he knocked Daniel Thomas out of the game and was trying to do the same to Lamar Millar before he got flagged.

I don't think I want anything to do with Bryant McKinnie or Eric Winston. Neither of them are very good at this point.

I think I'd prefer Winston Justice over anyone else left on the market.

I'm kinda lukewarm on Moreno. He's a decent enough back but I'd rather go for someone with a bit higher upside.

I wonder if they like him for his work in the shotgun last year, and want him for a heavier dose of the Chip Kelly-style run game.
