Not much dialogue or speculation as to how new offensive coordinaotr Bill Lazor views our current stable of RB's. But, judging off the visit by Knowshown Moreno and rumored interest in Maurice Jones-Drew I think we will see one or a possibly two new backs.

My view on the current:

Lamar Miller - Guys, he will be 23 years old this coming season. He had 709 yards and a 4.0 ypc avg in 2013 and that was behind the worst Offensive Line in the NFL. Is he a guy who carries the ball 20-25 times? No, but he is serviceable and has a second gear not too many running backs have. Getting him in space is going to be key in 2014.

Daniel Thomas - I think we can chalk this one up in the loss column. He just really isn't what we need in a complement to Miller. He is a big body who plays small. He doesn't have great speed. If I had to rate him he'd be average or below average in most categories.

Marcus Thigpen - I am truthfully hoping we draft a WR who has KR skills so we can get rid of Thigpen equally. Why? Well, he just isn't that darn good. Give me a Dri Archer or Bruce Ellington in the mid rounds in the draft and I'd be pleased.

Mike Gillislee - Not going to lie I was and wasn't surprised he didn't get a shot last year. I was surprised in the fact we had injuries and subpar play from our RB group last year. I wasn't surprised because we either hate playing rookies or they suck.

So, if it were me I'd look to draft a back and sign a vet. Let Gillislee compete and if he can't then cut him. Say goodbye to DT and MT.

My Top 5 Backs I'd Draft and Projected Round:

1. Tre Mason (Auburn): There is just something about this kid that fascinates me. He burst onto the scene this year in Gus Malzahn's offense which could mean he is a product of the system but the kid played his biggest on the biggest stage. 304 yards in the SEC Title Game then 196 yards in the National Championship game. 6 Touchdown's in those games. He moves like Ray Rice, but has more comparable height to Trent Richardson. Only concerns for me are pass catching and pass blocking.
2nd round

2. Charles Sims (WVU): If you haven't watched Charles Sims...everything about his game screams Matt Forte. I would rank Matt Forte in my top 5 most complete backs in the league. Sims like Forte is a strong runner with good speed (not great) and exceptional hands. Sims can even line up at WR or in the slot and be a weapon out there. Sims in my mind might be the best choice to what we need. His ran mighty fast enough at the combine.
2nd/3rd round

3. Bishop Sankey (Washington): Sankey reminds me a lot of Giovani Bernard, in the fact he probably can't be a 3 down back in the NFL but he can be a exceptional change of pace back. His compact frame and shiftiness make him tough to tackle on the first try. He isn't a big back at 5'9" but he is strong enough to hold up in the pass blocking game. Don't think he is going to be anything more than a good back who can be part of a 1-2 punch.
3rd round

4. Jeremy Hill (LSU): One day or another they will have to take a chance on a guy with character concerns and make a reclamtion project. Well, here lies what I think to be a potential steal in the draft at RB. Hill had his problems at LSU but man when he got the ball he ran with a purpose. His running style reminds me of Marshawn Lynch in the fact he has quick feet not fast but not slow either. He delivers a punch when he runs as well. His off field concerns probably mean he isn't on our list but he is the tough runner we need. He needs a coaching staff to push him to maximize his potential.
3rd round

5. Isiah Crowell (Alabama St.): I repeat one day talent will trump character especially when it has a value at this point in the draft. Had Crowell stayed at Georgia we could be talking about a 1st to 2nd round pick. The kid can flat out play but he has serious concerns with his character and durability. He has good size and good speed for a bigger back. He is someone at this position in the draft who could become one of the biggest steals in the draft.
4th/5th round

I'll play along:

1) Tre Mason - Auburn
2) Lache Seastrunk - Baylor
3) Carlos Hyde - Ohio State
4) Jeremy Hill - LSU
5) Isaiah Crowell - Alabama State

Not a real top 5, but these are the guys I feel like I've formed opinions on...

Tre Mason is my top guy without a doubt. That compact build and explosiveness will translate beautifully to the NfL, I think. He also knows when to be physical and take on contact with his strong lower body, always gets positive yards when he can. And he handled a heavy workload at Auburn, which I love. He's definitely my favorite RB, and I hope we take him at 19.

I think I like Seastrunk too, but it's a tougher call for me as to whether he's a first round pick. I don't see the hard-nosed kind of thing you see with Mason, which I think our particular backfield has lacked for a few years now. And it's hard for me to separate how fun he is to watch from how his funky style will project in the NFL

Gotta check out more Jeremy Hill still, though when I saw him play briefly I thought maybe 2nd probably 3rd round. Violence!

Carlos Hyde worries me because he just looks kind of choppy to me, in his strides and cuts, I dunno, like there's too much wasted movement. And I'm not sure he has the requisite foot quickness (which Lacy has) to do what he has to do at the LOS. But then again, he took everything out of the shotgun at OSU so it's hard to say. And it seems like defenders kind of fall off him a lot, good forward momentum. Maybe I just hate Ohio State that much...

Sims is intriguing but he just doesn't do enough between the tackles for my taste. He doesn't look natural running inside, very little bend or noteworthy balance. I keep seeing Matt Forte comparisons, and while I think Sims can hit long ones and catch balls like Forte does, I don't see him grinding it out consistently with good efficiency.

interesting class, and we definitely need one or two of em!

- Bishop Sankey will remind Hickey a lot of Doug Martin who he helped draft in Tampa. Thats my #1 guy anyway but having a Tampa link to Martin makes him #1 for us as well. Read the scouting reports from Martin's draft and you can copy them right over for Sankey. Concerns about long speed, blah blah blah. Kid is a good back and an ideal fit in round 2 if hes still there.
- Tre Mason - Great burst and a lot of talent
- Devonta Freeman - I see a lot of Warrick Dunn or MJD to his game. Good heady player imo.
- Charles Sims
- Jeremy Hill

Carlos Hyde reminds me too much of Beanie Wells. Not in a good way. I dont see Seatrunk as a real fit for us unless we do away with Miller and even then he doesnt rank in my top 5 because hes not an every down back. Kadeem Casey is a good back but hes not all that different then Lamar Miller from what I watch.

Only thing ever wrong with Beanie Wells was that he was soft as can be and stayed on the IR. The talent was undeniable. I am however a big fan of Mason.

In no order:

Bishop Sankey
Tre Mason
Carlos Hyde
Lache Seastrunk
Jeremy Hill

I'm more fond of the first 4 because I haven't done nearly enough watching on Hill. I'm a bit disappointed in the lack of top end speed in the draft, but CK has been touting Seastrunk as a McCoy look-alike on the field. McCoy had a 4.50 40 at his pro-day but he has great vision and agility. If Seastrunk is as shift as McCoy, that makes up for the speed issue.

Beanie also ran very upright which is what contributed to his injuries. He didnt have a lot of swivel/shiftiness/elusiveness to his game. I see a lot of that with Carlos Hyde. Maybe not as pronounced but its still there.

I still waffle on Tre La Soul versus the Lache Ness Monster.

One of those those guys is #1 and the other is #2.

Jeremy Hill takes #3 for me.

Andre Williams and Carlos Hyde battle it out for #4 and #5 and that's another one where I'll waffle.

You and I are the only ones so far to include Carey in the top 5. I guess he isn't flashy or pretty enough for most folks. All he does is know how to run with the football. Size and speed are nice when ya got it, but instincts...either ya got it or ya don't.

Too damn funny how many people are sleeping on Carey. He's gonna make people say damn, wish we would have drafted him. Just my opinion but he ****'s all over the rest of the backs in this draft. I've watched him play his whole career and all he's done in produce. Behind sub par lineman also. Guy breaks tackles, trucks over defenders and has great vision. Knows how to get yards and find the endzone. Love to have Ka' Deem on our team.

oh and my top 5

Carey
Sankey
Hill
Mason
Hyde

What do you see in hill? We see eye to eye on mason and seastrunk but hillbdoea nothing for me. It seems like he just runs through big holes. Hardlyever see him make someone miss.

Is there a game I can watch?

I see three things in Jeremy Hill that to me make him a highly compelling player.

1. He is above all very consistent with his vision in the backfield, very quickly and fluidly finding his track and getting himself out of trouble as he spots it. He consistently takes the football exactly where the coaches will think the football should have gone as they watch the film after the fact, except he does it in real time with great playing speed. I think the first thing you'd note about him is that if you take him you're not going to get Daniel Thomas'd by a guy who lacks natural instincts for the position.

2. He is a compelling physical specimen at 6'1" and 233 lbs, with long arms (32.5 inches) and big hands (10.5 inches). He has speed at that kind of size, as well as agility and burst. He's able to consistently use his power and size to fall forward. He breaks tackles with that size, power and explosiveness.

3. He adds an extra dimension with his pass catching work, where he showed up very active and very savvy at LSU. I believe he was the offense's third leading receiver and he catches the ball very naturally and transitions into run after catch quickly.

As far as production goes, NUGap's pieces are a MUST READ on the running backs. Jeremy Hill is on the first link. In total Greg evaluated Jeremy Hill, Carlos Hyde, Tre Mason, Lache Seastrunk, Jeremy Hill, Ka'Deem Carey, Bishop Sankey, Andre Williams, Devonta Freeman, Storm Johnson and Charles Sims.

http://www.rotoworld.com/articles/cfb/46396/349/out-of-the-box
http://www.rotoworld.com/articles/cfb/46540/349/out-of-the-box

You should note a number of things about Jeremy Hill from that piece:

1. Had the highest number of broken tackles of any back in the evaluation, as well as the highest broken tackle percentage (8.59%).
2. Averaged 7.4 yards per carry between the tackles, highest in the evaluation by a significant margin.
3. Averaged 7.3 yards per carry on plays where the defense had one more defender in the box than the offense had blockers, highest in the evaluation by a good margin.
4. Averaged 3.5 yards per carry on Goal to Go runs, highest in the evaluation by half a yard and a full yard higher than average for the position.

As for which tapes to watch, I'm not sure if I can point you to specific ones because I'm probably seeing the same tapes you are, just seeing them differently. You can find the Mississippi State, Auburn, Florida and Arkansas games on Draft Breakdown. In particular I think the Mississippi State and Auburn games were most impressive.

I just think it's kind of rare to find a back that combines everything into one package between the compelling NFL size and power characteristics, that kind of agility and speed, the consistent vision, and the ability to block and catch passes.

The two videos I think you'd probably find most compelling:

Not a fan of this RB draft class, so my list would be short, sweet, and wouldn't involve any day 1 or 2 picks. If I had to address the ground game early in the draft, I'd rather do it by way of the O-line.
1. Seastrunk
2a. Branden Oliver
2b. Isiah Crowell

If Seastrunk makes it to the 4th, which is possible since he's a complimentary player, I'd take him and one of the other two and call it a day. If he's gone, I'd take both Oliver & Crowell, especially when there's little drop off from Tre Mason to them as far as NFL potential goes IMO.

I didn't go as nerd on draft prospects this year as I usually do due to enjoying my last year of school, however from what I saw:

Seastrunk
Mason
J hill
Sims
Hyde

Depending on what team and the vision, that 5 can be rearranged, especially the top 3. I'm also not considering off field concerns.

Seas trunk is tops because I watched him beast in person and also because I've seen more of him than other prospects. Not scientific, but you were warned.

Seriously hoping we haven't scooped a FA back because we're going to get one via the draft. Really wished we could go into this draft without definite needs.
