The prose/dialog was anything but minimalist. It was nothing short of pompous, obnoxious, and gaudy.

Again, I'm not talking about the story. It's virtually impossible to find the story and grasp onto it amidst the extravagant hoity-toity tone of the dialogue, and it's that hoity-toity tone that makes the script supercilious.

A lot of it is about excess and greed so of course it's going to be gaudy.

The story is a lawyer getting in over his head w a lot of dangerous people. I don't see how it comes off as arrogant.

They use a lot of the same tactics as Belfort did w the pump and dump, etc.

He's also really good in Saving Private Ryan.

Actually, I'm pretty sure he wrote a very successful play.

I haven't seen it yet. It got horrible user reviews. The biggest complaint I saw was the extremely long, unnatural monologues that were written for the actors. In essence, he wrote it like a book. I'm almost afraid to watch it.

The only issue I have with your original remark was that Cormack McCarthy should cut off his hands and never write again. That's a pretty harsh criticism for what many consider to be the greatest living author.

Boiler Room was awesome. Saw it when it first hit DVD. I was in law school, and desperately wanted to work in the corporate/finance/securities world and that was the movie I remember the most.

You see Affleck with his Baldwin/Glengarry Glen Ross impersonation?

You're missing out. It was a pleasant surprise. Top two zombie movie (other is Shaun of the Dead).

Just watched Masquerade (Korean) last night. Thought it would be action, but it was drama. I liked it.

I bought Boiler Room on DVD when it first came out and haven't watched it since that one time. I think I will watch it tonight. And since you mention Glengarry GlenRoss, that has to be in my top 5 movies of all time. Alec Baldwin's character was great, but for me, Jack Lemmon stole the show. I consider him one of the greatest actors of all time. If you've never seen Some Like it Hot or The Apartment, do yourself a favor and watch them (I saw them in film class while in college). Some of the younger guys might not appreciate those movies, but they are classics.

writing a screen play is different than authoring a book. I was speaking of the former since this is the "last movie you saw" thread. He might be one of the greatest living book authors, but his first attempt at a screen play was garbage.

Kingdom of Heaven. I can never pass this movie by, same with Braveheart & Apocolypto. There was a really good article about Gibson that was posted last night. Guy has worked to overcome his own self destruction in the last 7 years. Taking aside the meltdown point of his life and just looking at his work, he is a brilliant director IMO.

Yeah they blacklisted the crap out of him. They don't like conservatives, and they don't like Jesus, and they hate anti-semites (even though I know he isn't one). Get accused or convicted for raping little girls though, you're ok.

He's set for life though, so don't feel too bad for him. He's loaded after Passion. I think he should say screw you to the majors and just do his own independent thing.

I actually thought Tom Cruise was going to be blacklisted as well after he went cookoo for cocoa puffs but he's slowly worked his way back in.

Is apocalypto good? Need to check that out.

I thought Apocolypto was amazing. Gibson has a way of bringing great cinematography in with a great story and not having one overwhelm the other in these types of movies. I'm sure Gibsons drive is acting & directing, more than money, and to tear that away from him at a low point in his life probably almost killed him. He is working on an independent movie now. Unless someone has the type of rage in them that Gibson displayed it is difficult to understand. You go blind, almost out of body, you hope someone would stop you. The depressing feeling after for what you've done to people is almost unbearable and you can't figure out how to express what happened to try to control it. It can put you in a mean place. Anyhow, the link is below, it's a good read IMO.

I saw Contraband last night. It was a solid 4/10. The only reason I give it a 4 is because I like Mark Wahlberg. I know it's an action film, but there is zero character development and the plot was tedious. I'd stay away.

    The Terror Live!

Wow. One of the best movies I've ever seen. The action starts within five minutes of the movie and you're glued to the screen for the next hour and a half. Might be the best hostage/terrrorist movie ever. Another gem from South Korea. I watched it with subtitles. Dont know if there is a dubbed version. But even if you hate subtitles, check this one out. You wont be sorry

My favorite Mel Gibson movie is, and probably always will be, Payback. Love the movie, even if it is a remake of the Lee Marvin classic, Point Blank.

Helgeland directed it... which leads me to other favorites, LA Confidential and Man on Fire...

If you need a chick flick to see I would recommend Instructions Not Included a Mexican movie. This is a single bachelor gets stuck with a baby movie but unlike any American movie in this genre, this is actually good. This movie is much deeper than the simplistic drivel Hollywood puts out. It tackles the important things in life; love, your fears, death. You bond with the characters almost instantly. Additionally, its a comedy but not a bang on your head with a club slapstick comedy. More of a subtle comedy. And trust me, your girl will be crying before the movie is through.

Gibson is also a wife beater.

    He's a scumbag.

And even all that could've been overcome in Hollywood if his last few movies were succesful. They weren't.

Hollywood doesn't hate conservatives or Jesus. It loves money. Anybody who can make money can have a career.

If Mel Gibson put out some hit action movie tomorrow, he could be a big star again. Unfortunately, people have learned enough that they don't like him anymore. It's different for directors becuase outside of a few big name ones, most people don't know or care about them. And even with that, Roman Polanski and Woody Allen aren't helming huge studio movies. They do small low budget movies but keep working because they turn a profit.

And Tom Cruise is far less a draw now then he was in his heyday and before his Scientology/Katie Holmes craziness. Knight and Day and Jack Reacher were huge bombs and even MI4, which was great, underperformed relative to the previous films.

wow. how did I not hear about this movie till now? Snowpiercer a South Korean movie that was released in 2013 and is scheduled for release in June of 2014 in the U.S.. This movie is shot in English so no dubbing or subtitles needed with the exception of two characters who speak korean. when they speak there are subtitles. I would say they have between them maybe 10% of the dialogue at most. It can also be seen on certain sites right now. you dont have to wait till june. The movie is a post apocalyptic action movie based on the French graphic novel Le Transperceneige by Jacques Lob & Benjamin Legrand and Jean-Marc Rochette. The premise is that to combat global warming governments started an aerial chemical program that worked a bit too well lol and turned the world into an ice ball killing off most of humanity. A few hundred or so survivors have been able to stay alive on a train that constantly circumvents the earth. Their world is the train and there is a class war that develops. That is about as far as I will go in describing the movie plot since any more and I'll start giving away the story. As corny as this premise sounded to me, they pulled it off. Absolutely great action flick. Though a bit slow at the very beginning by the fifteen minute mark or so you'll stayed glued. I have to say that right now, South Korea is making the best action movies in the world. (Oldboy, Musa the Warrior, Sympathy for Lady Vengeance, Memories of Murder, Tae Guk Gi, etc) Who would've thought?

a couple of good series to watch

The Detective Dee movies are a cross of Kung Fu and Charlie Chan mysteries. Very well done

And the Outpost series (1,2 and 3) are a Nazi zombie series that are pretty entertaining. Not as well done as Detective Dee but its Nazis and zombies! Dont see Outpost 11. It has nothing to do with this series and it wasnt that good

Holleywoodland... Ben Affleck as George Reeves/Superman. As usual, he ranged from meh to all out suckitude.

Diane Lane, Bo Hoskins, and Adrien Brody we pretty good. Lane tends to enjoy roles where she protrays women of questionable morals and sexual intent. Hoskins is almost type cast as a mafia type figure who seems inherently borderline evil.

Brody's character of Louis Simo, the PI investigating the death of Reeves was interesting. Seemed like a NY sterotype caught in the middle of the CA case. Acted like a badass, until he got smacked around. The film seemed like an attempt to capture the aura of LA Confidential...
