The Buffalo Bills select at #1 overall, WR Sammy Watkins from Clemson There's no question that WR is a need for the Bills. We trade up to #1 to get the best of a deep group this year. We needed to add playmakers on offense, no question.
With the #2 pick, the reigning Champion Seahawks are thrilled to add the apple of their eye all along- Jadeveon Clowney. After losing Cliff Avril, Chris Clemons, Tony McDaniel, nickel rush specialist Clinton McDonald, Brandon Browner, Walter Thurmond, and Red Bryant to free agency or cap casualty, GM ToddsSeahawks' top priority became to rebuild the league's best defense to prior form, if not improve upon it..... so from early on Seattle's goal was to move up the last pick of the first round to the #2 spot in hopes of adding one of the most dominant defenders the draft has ever seen. With no more worries about an undesired college formality taking up Jadeveon's time and taking a toll on him mentally when knowing he would've been a top 5 pick two years ago, his spirits will be on the rise and taking that pent up frustration out on opposing quarterbacks in the NFL where he won't be game-planned against with near the ferocity he saw in college. No more being routinely double & triple teamed with offenses doing everything in their power to both avoid Jadeveon and have him repeatedly chase plays down from the backside to wear him out. If the amount of energy a player exerts each snap could be measured and then used to form a baseline, Clowney would easily exceed that on the majority of his snaps where he was tasked with either facing extra blockers, chasing plays down from the backside, or both, to a such physically demanding level no other college defender had to face. Watch his Tennessee game below and it's easy to see this truth in full affect. Jadeveon is far from a lazy, disinterested, selfish player who takes plays off or disappears b/c of it. He's a passionate, high-intensity, highly-demanding player [of himself and his teammates] who wears himself down by going all-out all the time until there's nothing left in the tank. When you're as game-planned against as Clowney is and you're exertion level is as high as Clowney's, it's only a matter of time until you're running on empty. Notice how Jadeveon operates at a higher intensity/exertion level through the first 3 quarters than anyone else on the field in order to counter the added offensive attention thrown at him. Notice how often Tennessee runs away from Jadeveon or leaves him unblocked in order to make him chase plays down from the backside to wear him out. Also notice his passion for the game, for winning, and for great defensive play that's also displayed through the leadership role he takes on the field, which includes being the first guy in a teammate's ear when a mistake is made. In Seattle with Cam Wake, Von Miller, Star Lotulelei, and Arthur Jones, Jadeveon won't be extra-blocked or run ragged to the crazy level he saw in college, and with this group he'll be afforded more of a rotation to keep him and everyone else fresh for 4 quarters. It's a perfect fit for Jadeveon as a LEO in Seattle where he can come off the edge at 7 or 9 technique every snap in base D and worry about nothing but getting after the QB or chasing plays down from the backside like he does best. What an ideal opportunity for Jadeveon with the young stud Lotulelei next to him commanding double teams in base D, leaving Jadeveon isolated on a tackle in space where he can either beat him off the edge or use his burst and strength to knife inside to kill plays in the backfield or from the backside for no gain. This is great timing for Clowney as Wake is reaching the point where snap count could be reduced to maintain longevity. Initially, Clowney can rotate in with Wake at LEO to keep Wake fresh and ease Jadeveon in. By year two, Clowney becomes the starting LEO with Wake rotating in to keep Clowney fresh. Against passing teams, there's an alternative base package of Wake at LE, Clowney at RE, and Lotulelei & Jones in the middle. In Seattle's ominous NASCAR nickel package, Von Miller moves up to RE, Wake at LE, and Clowney reduces down where he instantly becomes one of the game's best interior nickel rushers, if not the best. Where's a QB to go with Miller & Wake coming off the edge and Clowney busting through the middle! It's a match made in heaven.
The Washington Redskins are under a new regime with an eye for Quarterbacks. While he would love to take one of the top picks off the board, he has not seen enough of Kirk Cousins to jettison him yet. He has shown in limited reps that he garners a second look with some serious time and with the departure of RG3 has been elevated to starter. With the 4th pick in the 2014 GML Draft, the Washington Redskins select Khalil Mack, linebacker, Buffalo. Mack is a freakish athlete with the instincts to match. Having played a hybrid position in the 3-4, he will fit right into what the Washington Redskins plan to do. With newly signed Spikes and Orakpo resigned, Mack will only add to a destructive group at the linebacker position. Hail to the Redskins #HTTR. With the 5th pick in the 2014 GML Draft, The Denver Broncos select... Quarterback... Teddy Bridgewater, Louisville
With the 7th pick the Philadelphia Eagles select their favorite player in the draft....WR Mike Evans, Texas A&M. Evans will solidify the best offense in the league, giving Kaepernick another big bodied target to throw to.
With the 9th selection in the 2014 NFL Draft, the Newer Orleans Saints select: Greg Robinson, OT, Auburn The Saint’s were surprised to see their top ranked tackle left on the board at number nine. When it came down to it, Robinson’s superior upper body strength and high ceiling gave him the nod over the 1B option in Jake Matthews. Although rookie Terron Armstead had a more than adequate debut last season as a rookie, locking up the book ends with Duane Brown and Robinson ensures future stability along the line. Armstead now provides a potent depth at either G or T. This move also allows the Saints to improve their power running game with which has been lacking in recent seasons.
With the 10th selection in the 2014 NFL Draft, the Newer Orleans Saints select: Anthony Barr, OLB, UCLA No time for a write up... but I'll leave with saying... BOMB
With the 11th pick, the Seattle Seahawks select Aaron Donald......and put the final stamp on its D-line makeover, pulling a coup in the process by landing the draft's most dominant defensive tackle and end. Donald will serve as a movable chess piece along the defensive front. His presence provides an incredibly flexible 5 man rotation of Donald, Clowney, Wake, Lotululei, and Arthur Jones, with Lotulelei & Jones both possessing the versatility to play both inside & outside [as a closed end] and both 1-gap & 2-gap. Defensive Coordinator Ken Norton Jr is drooling over the opportunity to shuffle these guys around to create matchup advantages, exploit weaknesses, and keep offenses on its toes with no idea what to expect on any given play. Seattle's NASCAR package just went from unreal to WTF JUST HAPPENED. Wake & Von Miller off the edge with Clowney & Donald working the interior. Aaron Rodgers' career in St Louis just got a few years shorter.
With the 12th selection in the 2014 NFL Draft, the New York Giants select: Jake Matthews, OT, Texas A&M The Giants were surprised to see their #1b tackle still on the board with the 12[SUP]th[/SUP] pick. Matthews is a smart, tough, versatile franchise left tackle capable of playing all five positions on the line. He started 46 of 49 games played at A&M and was a 2x first-team All-SEC (2012-13) selection, 2013: First-team AP All-American and an Outland Trophy finalist. Matthews is an athletic, natural bender, an exceptional technician who is quick off the snap and uses his long, strong arms and good mobility to control his opponents when pass blocking. Matthews is an outstanding run blocker, drives defenders off the ball, athletic enough to surprise defenders with an occasional chop block or slipping out to the second level to nail a linebacker, he's at his best simply driving defensive ends off the ball and creating lanes for running backs to slice through. He is keen to recognize and quick to adjust to the blitz, strong finisher, displays a mean streak and seeks to finish. The Giants will look for Matthews to challenge Will Beatty for the starting LT position a move that will see former 1[SUP]st[/SUP] rounder Justin Pugh move inside to Guard and Beatty to RT. Offensive line was a major concern last season and the Giants feel they have added the final piece in the rebuild of their offensive line by adding a potential pro-bowl and franchise left tackle. With the 13th pick, the Denver Broncos select... Ha-Ha Clinton Dix, Safety Alabama Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
With the 14th pick, the Atlanta Falcons select... CJ Mosley, MLB, Alabama! We're excited to add CJ to our starting LB group alongside talented, young veterans Akeem Ayers and Sean Weatherspoon. CJ is the type of smart, athletic LB we want to help continue to push our defense over the top.
With the 16th Overall pick in TP 2014 GML Draft, the Dallas Cowboys select: Justin Gilbert, CB, Oklahoma State
With the 17th Pick the St Louis Rams select..... WR USC Marqise Lee I fell in love with this WR long before the draft began, there isn't anything this kid can not do. People who have watched the Biletnikoff winner already know he is explosive and can turn a 7 yard slant into a 90 yd TD, but what won me over was watching him look like a crafty veteran and fighting for the football in the air...he isn't afraid to mix it up in the middle of the field and blocks his *** off. This time last season he was the consensus #1 WR for a reason. He will work out of the slot initially while Boykin continues to develop. This young man is a welcomed addition to the Rams offense.
With the 19th pick, Seattle selects Missouri DE Kony Ealy. I've been a big fan of Ealy's for a while. As he continues gaining strength he's essentially Ziggy Ansah with a better burst off the line. Big athletic defensive ends who can get after the QB in base D and then reduce down to impact interior nickel rusher aren't easy to come by, and Seattle is currently without one so this trade made a lot of sense to me. In a vacuum, Jadeveon Clowney is hands down the better player here, but now that Aaron Donald has been added to Seattle's defensive front, GM ToddsPhintacular can't pass on an opportunity to exchange out Clowney for a better scheme fit in Ealy while also adding an extra 1st rounder in the process. Seattle already has edge rushers in Von Miller & Cam Wake, and has Wake starting in the LEO role, but what's sorely missing is a bigger 4-3 end in the Michael Bennett mold capable of holding down the RDE spot opposite Wake when Seattle mixes in traditional 4-3 packages that swap out a 5-tech end [Arthur Jones] for a 7-tech strong side type end. That's not Clowney as he's better suited for the LEO role, but it is Ealy. Ealy has the combine's fastest cone time of any D-linemen the past 9 years, equal to LeSean McCoy's if that lends better perspective, and that combination of quickness, flexibility, and agility paired with his size and length makes Kony a prime candidate to become one of the NFL's best interior nickel/dime rushers and even an upgrade to the departed Michael Bennett, and instances of that potential pop out on tape. As interior pass rushing goes [which is where Clowney & Ealy would be spending half of their snaps the next few years with Wake & Miller better suited off the edge], there's such a negligible difference between Clowney & Ealy that it was a no brainer for me to opt out for Ealy with an extra 1st rounder involved.
With the 20th overall pick, the Arizona Cardinals are pleased to select... Calvin Pryor - S Louisville Cardinals http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bjDx1ysE7lw
With the 21st selection in the 2014 draft the Green Bay Packers select: Linebacker from THE OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY Ryan Shazier Two-time first-team All-Big Ten pick (2012-13). 2013: First-team All-American selection and Butkus Award finalist. Started all 14 games. 2012: Started in all 12 games. Was a two-time Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week pick. Finished his 3 yr career at OSU with 317 tackles (200 solo), 45.5 tackles for a loss, 15 sacks, one interception for a touchdown, 16 passes defended and nine forced fumbles. He led Ohio State in tackles the past two seasons and garnered numerous first-team All-American honors. He's a linebacker who can play inside or outside, and should do well at both. Shazier has the natural ability to succeed in coverage. He's capable of running with any tight end or running back, and has the flexibility to cover the slot and keep up with misdirection. Shazier finds himself in so many plays because of his instincts. He can read a play in a hurry and has the athleticism to turn instincts into production. He forced four fumbles in 2013, to go along with 23.5 tackles for loss and seven sacks. Some may look at Shazier's size and question his skill against the run. Those people would be wrong in doing so. Shazier is quick to locate the ball and closes on a developing play in a hurry. Although he's lacking sometimes as a tackler, he has shown he can take down the ball carrier in a variety of ways. Against the run, Shazier relies on shooting through gaps or beating the runner to the edge. Ryan bulked up from around 228 to 237 pounds in the offseason and showed no loss of athleticism or speed at the Combine or his Pro Day. After getting over the shock of this kid being here at this point in the draft and apologizing to the young autistic child Houston's GM trampled on the rush to the podium...... The Houston Texans are happy to select with the 23rd overall selection Michigan OT Taylor "Misdemeanor" Lewan. A more raw Jake Long with a meaner streak. 48 starts at Michigan, shut down the Clown.
With the 24th pick, the Cincinnati Bengals select CB Kyle Fuller of Virginia Tech. After ridding themselves of aging players in Terrance Newman and Adam Jones, and with Leon Hall coming off a serious Achilles injury, the Bengals weren't prepared to rely solely on Dre Kirkpatrick rounding out the secondary. After acquiring Brice McCain to play in the slot and Sterling Moore as outside depth, the Bengals selected Fuller best on being the best player available and the best CB fit our our scheme. At 5'11" 194lbs Fuller has size, speed, and a knack for getting his hands on the ball notching 29 career PBUs and 10 career interceptions, with 11 PBUs and 6 INTs coming as a senior. A veteran of 54 games played Fuller has the experience and athletic ability to start at either CB position. Ideally, this will allow the Bengals to move Leon Hall into the slot in nickel and sub packages with Fuller and Kirkpatrick playing outside. Capable of playing both the boundary and field sides, as well as the slot, and showing a nice ability to time his blitzes, Fuller is not afraid of contact and is probably more adept in run support (see video taking down T.J. Yeldon, solo) than any current Bengals CB on the roster. Fuller solidifies a strong starting defensive unit that is now only lacking some depth at safety. After trading up to 25 The Pittsburgh Steelers select: Dee Ford DE/OLB Auburn Dee Ford is, in the estimation of the Pittsburgh Steelers the most natural conversion prospect from Defensive End to Outside Linebacker in this draft. The steelers scouting department has drawn comparisons to the traded Lamarr Woodley. Ford plays with great quickness and possesses a devastating rip move. http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/draft/players/1665025/dee-ford
With the 26th pick of the 2014 GML Draft. Houston is happy to pick: RaShede Hageman, DT, Minnesota When I first saw that Boik had traded up ahead of me I was about ready to pull out the classic: But luckily I didn't have to worry. Originally I had traded up because I thought Boik might take my #1 target had I stayed at 30 with Hageman. Guess we fooled each other. Houston plans to play Hageman as a 3-4 LDE paired with rising star RDE Mike Daniels with Earl Mitchell, Tony McDaniel and the veteran Brett Kiesel rotating in keeping everyone fresh.
With the 27th pick, the Seattle Seahawks select Bradley Roby, DB, Ohio State The Seahawk defense runs through its ability to flawlessly execute its Cover-3 scheme, so if that takes a hit, Seattle's entire defensive philosophy would have to change. Therefore there's currently no greater team need than acquiring a talented, playmaking corner of the future who can handle his 1/3 of the field opposite Richard Sherman.... and Roby fits that billing with an exclamation point. He's a special player with top 10 ability who could easily blossom into one of the game's best under Sherman's tutelage. With the addition of Roby, the integrity of the Legion of Boom remains intact.
With the 28th pick in the 2014 GM League draft, the Carolina Panthers select Jace Amaro, TE from Texas Tech. boom sucka.
With the 29th selection in the 2014 NFL Draft... the Saints select: Darqueze Dennard, CB, Michigan St
The Kansas City Chiefs make their first pick of the GML, as aided by the draft committee... with the 30th pick they select... WR from the national champions...Florida State, Kelvin Benjamin The Chiefs have many needs as they essentially sat out free agency. So we go with one of the BPA's that also fill a need at WR. Bowe and Benjamin... B and B.
With the 31st pick, the Cleveland Browns select... Zack Martin, OT/OG, Notre Dame It's not very often that value and need come together like this. While it's hard to say the Browns NEED any position after a plethora of trades and signings, they could afford an upgrade on the offensive line. Well, somehow one of the top 15-20 players in the 2014 NFL draft that just so happens to play offensive line fell to us at pick 31. Martin is a guy who will come in and start day one on our line and can play any of the 5 positions if need be. We will go into camp with Martin competing to start at either guard or right tackle and fully expect him to win the job at both positions leaving the battle among a handful of others for the last starting spot on our line.
With the 32nd pick in the 2014 GML Draft. The Houston Texans double dip and select: Stephon Tuitt, DT, Notre Dame One of my key goals in revamping Houston was to get away from the light one gap 3-4 defense they had been playing. Get away from those 275lb DE's and 290lb NT's. With Tuitt I now believe this is complete with a 330lb NT and a great rotation of 3-4 ends going from 295 to 310+. With Tuitt and Daniels rotating defenses will have a hard time keying in on who to double. I believe Houston has been able to walk out of this first round with by far the 2 best 3-4 ends in the draft.
Making their first official pick of the 2014 GML Draft, the 33rd overall, the Miami Dolphins select Donte Moncrief, Wide Receiver out of Ole Miss.
With their second round pick, 2.34, the Warshington Redskins select..... .....Austin Seferian-Jenkins.....Tight End.....Warshington. Jay Gruden loves two Tight End sets. With Jordan Reed already slotted as TE1, Austin will fit right in at the TE2 position. Come on down Austin, the table at Stadium Nightclub is already booked and you get first pick from the girls. green Bay Selects (with the 35th pick in the draft) Louis Nix III - DT Write Up To Come I'M In The Car On The Way To Birthday Weekend Shenanigans
With the 36th pick in the draft the Pittsburgh Steelers select Troy Niklas TE Notre Dame. Write up to come. Published by our very own CK, this video shows Niklas flaws and strengths. I tend to see more of a Heath Miller then an Anthony Fasano comparison as he blocks well but also has soft hands. His routes and agility are better then Fasano as well. He runs through arm tackles with impressive ease. http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/draft/players/1893206/troy-niklas
