    ### We hear Dolphins owner Stephen Ross and Dan Marino met recently to discuss a potential job with the organization and those conversations will continue. Ross and Marino haven’t yet settled on what would be the best fit for him, but both parties want to make it work and he could end up involved in multiple aspects of the organization. A role on the football side is possible down the road, but probably not in the next few months.

It's smart. Let him get a taste of various things. And if it works out maybe he moves up. God knows the current structure doesn't scream security ;p

He knows how to read a defense. He knows the passing game. He knows both at a very high level. It's a good start. Even if they start him in sales or PR he'd eventually get into the football side somehow. First thing to do is bring him aboard, in any capacity.

if he's just a figure-head I don't see the point here other than some marketing ploy by Ross (kind of like Ross trying to bring celebrities on board as mini-owners - just meaningless fluff).

If they felt he could be another Elway, then that could be a difference and he could really make an impact. Otherwise, it's almost like he's just doing Dan a favor and trying to improve the image of the team from a 'goodwill' economic viewpoint.

A thousand times this. Allowing Danny to watch film w/THill will trump anything the coaches "teach" him.

He had a rep for not watching film as a player, why would he start watching film now? Don't know if this is what he would bring to the team.

To me, the most interesting aspect of this is the fact that Marino has stayed close to the game for many years with his broadcasting job, instead of doing something completely different. Not only was he the entire Miami Dolphins offense during his tenure, but now that he's covered other teams while broadcasting, surely some of that has also rubbed off on him over the years.

I think that he would be great in a role where he's the go between with Ross and the football operation. He's not making the football decesions, but he understands them, and makes sure that things are clear and smooth between everyone. Eyes and ears on both sides.

Yeah I really don't know why people choose to be so all-or-nothing and generally negative about this. Basically it's got to be him being the head of everything, or else he's just a figurehead.

Uhh, no. There IS some in-between. It doesn't have to be so all or nothing.

What Barry said makes sense too when he mentioned that Marino will not likely work on the football side for a few months. They're still in draft mode right now. You can't just add a swinging dick to the party in the 11th hour like that. And immediately after the draft they'll be bringing in all their UDFAs and also taking a second pass over the remaining free agents to fill positions that didn't get addressed in the draft. There will be players cut by teams after the draft and they'll want to look at those guys as well.

You don't want to add someone to the personnel decision-making structure while decisions about 2014 personnel are still being made. However at some point (before camp most likely) they'll basically be done with that phase of the business for this year with the exception of some minor roster maintenance as injuries happen, and a few waiver claims...and that's when you start to figure out where Marino fits. Coincidentally, that is also when they will figure out how the Analytics department fits.

I don't really want Marino involved with the team. Why? He's got no business experience, no football personnel experience, and no coaching experience. He threw a football really well, and was an adequate pre-game guy.

Ross doesn't have a position for him, or any reason to do it other than people have pushed for it and suggested it would be a good idea. That doesn't give me a tremendous amount of confidence this won't be an embarrassment.

Doesn't mean he can't add a lot of value. It has more to do with whether the current infrastructure allows Marino to actually participate and get involved in making real decisions. He doesn't have to have final say to have significant impact. He does need an environment where the fellow decision makers respect his opinion.

yes, that's the glass half empty perspective. you could be right. On the other hand, I would have said the exact same thing about Elway before he got the Broncos GM position.

    Why?

Elway's abilities off the field have nothing to do with Marino's. Elway was a more cerebral QB than Dan. Elway did front office stuff.

Dan's philosophy when playing was just shut up and throw it to the open guy. His TV gigs were bereft of any real analysis. He brought nothing but a name.

This isn't glass half empty, this is what has Marino ever done to show anyone he can do anything with power in organization? Could he succeed? Sure, but there's literally no evidence, circumstantial or otherwise to indicate he will.

Danny boasted on film he'd sleep through film sessions (at least I think it was him). Go watch the special on him. When asked about scheme etc. etc., he said, just find the open guy and let it rip. Dan is probably the best natural passer of all time. But as a QB he was sorely lacking and the rest of the league caught up. If he put in half the time Tom Brady and Peyton Manning did, he would have been so unbelievably great there would be no comparison.

Of course it was a cheap shot. Noone mentioned anything about drinking in this thread. Take all the things Dan Marino has done..both good and bad...his football..charity works...money raised...throw in the drinking and and womanizing...you think more positive or negative.? The first thing that pops into your head out of all of that is drinking? I have met the man twice with my family. Could not have been a better person to me and my boys. Is he perfect...not even close...but to point out one instance that bothered you..and forget about the whole picture..and to throw it in as a quick joke...it's a cheap shot.

While I can't make a strong argument against Marino's lack of experience, I think you're over embellishing Elway's "front office stuff". he owned some car dealerships, he owned a couple of steakhouses and he spent a short time as a part owner of an AFL team. hardly qualifications to be GM. and furthermore, a simple glance in Wikipedia:

    Its worlds more then Marino.

Still, going back to the playing days, Elway was a more cerebral QB then Marino. Elway studied the game, Marino did not. Its really a testament to Marino's physical abilities, but in the end he was too arrogant to study the game.

    Oh stop it.

We are talking about a position where he would get up on a public stage on behalf of the dolphins and be the face of the franchise. The last time he did that, he was embarrassingly drunk. It's not ridiculous or cheap for me to bring it up.

Oh you stop it! Absolutely a cheap shot. You spend all off season coming up with every excuse to defend Philbin and the mess this team was to the entire sports world. You spend all your time to discredit every report made by the media that puts us in a bad light...But our all time franchise player, First ballot HOFer, first in line to do charity work is the guy you are concerned is going to embarrass this organization. WOW!

    Stop it yourself.

It was a lame attempt at a joke and a cheap shot. You are entitled. What position are we talking about? Has he been appointed to anything yet?Public Stage? the man has been on the public stage his WHOLE LIFE. He will be held to a standard by the organization. I hate to think all the good the man has done gets erased by the incident you are talking about. Just think its poor to go out of your way to go for the quick laugh at a guy who has done more than almost anyone for this team and South Florida

Don't lecture me. I was at his retirement ceremony. I have an autographed jersey that goes with me in a fire. I had basically a shrine to him in my room while I was growing up.

The difference is I'm not willing to gloss over his faults just because he was a great QB. He got up on stage and was visibly drunk. That was an important PR event and he cared so little he allowed himself to get ****faced before he went on stage. If he's getting a position that involves PR (which it would), then its completely fair for me or anyone else to bring up what he did the last PR event he attended.

And LI, your argument is effing stupid. None of that other stuff has **** all to do with Marino being drunk.
