Im looking for a turn based, 3rd person RPG, in the style of Final Fantasy 7, 8, 10 & 12. I was very disapointed in FFXIII and its sequal, as they didnt deliver the style and gameplay from the previous games. While I love other games like Skyrim and the Mass Effect and Dragon Age series', they arent the same thing. I know that gaming, like everything else, evolves and changes, but are there any "old school" RPG games being made that Im missing?

Need more information. What platform(s) do you want to play on? Are you looking for JRPGs in specific or any kind of third person RPG?

PS3. Obviously, the FF games, and ones like them 10 years ago, originated in Japan and were translated into English (usually well). Is there anything like that being made today that is available for English speaking audiences? I know that things exist in Japan, however many of them seem skewed to the juvenile, younger Anime style, and not a more serious tone.

Valkyria Chronicles (more of a strategy game, but you should still try out the demo at least), Nier, maybe Persona 4, and Ni no Kuni come to mind. Otherwise, you've picked what might be this generation's worst platform for JRPGs (OK, maybe the 360 is worse). You'd honestly be better served with a 3DS or digging up a PS2 and playing games you missed on that platform.

Otherwise your only hope is to wait; Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 Remix is out on September 10, the FFX and X-2 remake package is out on December 31, and Lightning Returns is out on February 11, 2014 (and LR actually looks like a worthy game).

Thanks for the info guys. My wife plays the Kingdom Hearts games. I call them FF for kids, lol. I'll probably get Lightning Returns, but to me, its not a FF game. It looks to be an action RPG, more like a combination of Assasin's Creed and Skyrim in gameplay (both of which I love), but not in the traditional FF style. I played the Xenosaga games on the PS2, and they were the closest Ive ever seen to the FF style by somone else. That was....ten years ago or more.

This is why you're playing on the wrong platform, though. The games you want aren't on the PS3. Something like Radiant Historia on the DS would be perfect, especially if you liked Chrono Trigger in addition to FF. There's always iOS, too: you can buy FF3, FF4, FF5, and FFT right now for your iPhone or iPad.

Chrono Trigger was one of my favorite SNES games. A rare RPG that I would replay multiple times. Good times. Thanks for all the info. I dont do handhelds or game on my phone though. Depending on what else Im playing, I'll likely by the HD Remix of FFX and play it when it comes out.

You've missed out on a LOT of good games that fit your criteria by not playing handhelds.

If you can get access to to a 360, I would suggest giving Lost Odyssey a shot, it was made by Hironobu Sakaguchi (FF creator). I thoroughly enjoyed the game and it was alot of fun.

if you have an xbox 360... Lost Odyssey. Awesome game, made by the creator of FF7 (as with the music as well). The 1000 years of dreams stories are great as well and add a great dimension to the game.

Not quite. Hironobu Sakaguchi only produced FF7; he directed 1-6. By the time 7 rolled around he was kicked upstairs and was just a supervisor. 7 was directed by Yoshinori Kitase.

Thanks for all the help guys. Until I buy a PS4 at some point in 2014, Im a one console guy, and there are so many other games for the PS3, that I have no real reason so switch. I do appreciate all of the ideas, and I looked very closely at several of the games that you had mentioned when they came out, such as Ni No Kuni and Eternal Sonata, but in reading the reviews, while they may be very well made games, they just arent my cup of tea.

I guess that what Im looking for, a game that uses current gen tech for graphics and gameplay to its best, while in the mold of the turn based RPG, with an "adult-ish" story line, just is a dead genre for the time being. FF15 looks to be all of that.....except in the mold of an action RPG.

Rather than start a new thread, I thought that I'd dig this one up and post that I bought FFXIII-Lightening Returns this week. In reading previews and reviews, the gameplay is what I expected in style, though MUCH harder than any previous FF Game. "Regular" enemies are kicking my *** left and right to the point that I avoid them if at all possible. I played my first "boss" encounter last night and got beaten so badly that after two tries I just gave up and left the area. However, the biggest thing that I don't like - a many have said - is the clock, always ticking away. I've spent about 6 hours of real time playing through the first three days in the game, and it feels like not only am I being forced to take the game at it's own, very quick pace - rather than my own traditional very deliberate one, but that the game is also teasing me by showing a lot of things that I could do but telling me I won't be able to. Sucks. If it wasn't the continuation to the story, I may be feeling as if I were ripped off. When I buy any game, but especially a FF game, I want to be able to spend about 60-100 hours over a few months digging through it, and building my character(s) up. It looks right now that I may be through this one in about two weeks, which is depressing.

The clock aspect has turned my wife off as well. I wonder if there's any chance of a future update where you can play through the game without the clock (or at least a modified/extended clock; time is relative after all).

All the good old school JRPGs are on the handhelds anymore. I got a DS, Bravely Default, and Fire Emblem and haven't broken my wallet open since then because they're such lengthy games. Have also been getting my Monster Hunter fix on it as well.

Completing sidequests extends the clock, so it's doubtful they'll do that.

Also came across this article online that suggests nothing else cool is on the horizon from my perspective either, other than FF15 and DA3. Too bad. Had you told me FF12 would be, from my perspective, the last great traditional rpg, I'm not sure I'd have believed you. I had so much hope for the new better technology leading to bigger, deeper games with great graphics and sound. Eight years later and no one's built on all of that foundation.

After I clicked on the link, I had to chuckle. I know from earlier in the thread that its your thing, but handhelds don't even cross my mind. I can't imagine how to go from gaming on a 60" HDTV with the Dualshock in my hands to one of those little things.

It's just like holding the controller in your hands. Seriously, if you want a classic RPG, give it a shot.

By the way, I didn't link anything. The forum's advertising software probably inserted a link in my text.

I was always a console only guy (NES, Genesis, PS1/2/3) and have never owned a handheld. My thoughts were if I'm not home I won't be playing it since I would get car sickness trying to play while riding somewhere, and on vacation I didn't play games. If I am home, why would I play a handheld over a console? I borrowed my friend's PSP a few months ago and played Final Fantasy Tactics: War of the Lions and Final Fantasy IV: The After Years. I enjoyed both a lot and see I may have been wrong about handhelds. There also seems to be a good number of turn based and strategy/tactical RPGs on the system, which is great because action RPGs are my least favorite. If you have an opportunity to borrow a PSP (or any other handheld) then might be worth a try, or maybe google/YouTube some games on the system and see if they appeal to you. Other than that, I guess taking advantage of older games on the PSN store is the best option available since the current consoles just don't produce a lot of games in that mold.

Additionally, if we're talking about handheld strategy games, the Super Robot Wars series is worth a look at if you don't mind games being in another language and completely incomprehensible. Strategy is strategy, IMO. Maybe it's my desire for a good Gundam game talking, but the series is pretty decent.

I didn't realize they had Super Robot Wars games on anything but handhelds.

Also, if you don't mind playing in other languages, there's plenty of Gundam games on PS3 (the system is region free for games after all). There's got to be a good one or two in the bunch (Extreme Vs. is good from wha I have heard).

Edit: Dynasty Warriors Gundam 1-3 by the way.

I loved 3 but doesn't seem like it was long enough to play it again, has been a while though. I remember beating the first Suikoden on PS1, don't think I ever played 2 though.

I put all my games in sleeves this week since I moved and didn't want to invest in tons of shelves, and can't believe how many RPGs I still have to play on PS2 (Suikoden 3 is one of them).

I still have the majority of my PS2 games on a shelf too, but nothing to play them on. In fact, I bought FF12 and my PS3 on the same day, and never played the game on the PS2. Unfortunately, my first gen PS3 broke to the point that it was unfixable, and my new one of course doesn't play PS2 games (the bastards). I gave my PS2 to a nephew years ago, and he broke it not long afterwards.
