I'd like to clear up something I've noticed in the voting so far. My LB corps is getting knocked too harshly and on the verge of being unfair IMO. A. Von Miller. nuff said B. Malcolm Smith, WILL. What reason would I have for replacing him?... for better name recognition, or for a guy who superficially carries a higher draft status? At 656k the opportunity cost would've been terrible. He was the SB MVP [not a fluke], PFF's 5th highest rated 4-3 OLB, and ripped off 4 INTs [2 for TDs] in his final 5 games. I mean seriously, Seattle boasted the #1 D that dominated the post season and Peyton Manning; this didn't happen in spite of Malcolm Smith. On a team full of defensive studs, he out-shined them all on the biggest stage against the NFL's all-time best offense: 10 tkls, 1 INT TD, 1 PD, and 1 FR. C. Paul Worrilow, ILB. He made the NFL All-Rookie Team last year after 127 tackles in 12 starts and impressively notched a tackle every 16.1% of his snaps which was just shy of Burfict's league-leading 16.4%. Most impressively is the fact he accomplished this in Mike Nolan's complicated defense that we Miami fans know first hand gives even veterans difficulties during their first year in his system. He's a 3-down backer and is better than any ILB this draft not named CJ Mosley, hence me bugging Atlanta's GMs from the start to trade him b/c I felt he was a long term answer who should develop into one of the game's better ILBs. But I guess there's that superficial "name recognition/draft status" issue rearing its head up again. I did have Curtis Lofton but that trade was reneged as we all know. I thought I'd get some love for front seven considering my defensive line is near tops in the league IMO. Though my LBs are fairly average.
If it's any consolation I think your front 7 has a chance to be quite damn good if everyone plays to potential, namely Zach Brown. I also think it's patently nuts that New Orleans' O-line didn't get enough nominations to make the final voting. Duane Brown, Jahri Evans, Greg Robinson, and Ben Grubbs? For realz?
so it begins. Begins?? Wait.. so it continues... Well that doesn't have the same ring to it now does it? Here we go... again... hmmmm
No one said your lb's were bad Todd. You have a 1st and 2nd place vote so far....what are you complaining about?
Top 10 Highest Paid Free Agent Defensive Backs GML (2010-2014) Along with Wide Receiver, Defensive Backs have been highly prized free agents, but do they get paid on par with their offensive counter parts? Here's a quick snap shot of the Top 10-11 highest paid DBs, and what percentage of the cap they took up. As you can see there has been a steady decline in DB contracts over the years. Interestingly enough Carlos Rogers has been a free agent three times and initial went from 4% of the cap (2011) to 10% of the cap (2012) back down to 6% of the cap (2014). Percentage wise Courtland Finnegan has had the biggest contract at 18% (2012), which is only 5% less than this years biggest contract paid out to Jimmy Graham at $30,000,000 which only accounts for 23% of the salary cap (2014). In terms of contracts Peyton Manning is still untouchable at 39% of the salary cap (2011) when he was paid $29,000,000 of a possible $75,000,000 cap. Top 10 Highest Paid Free Agent Wide Receivers GML (2010-2014) Wide receiver is a marquee position and highly regarded in the GML, but how does it really compare to their defensive counterparts? When looking at the defensive backs we can see a decline in spending for cornerbacks and safeties but it's even more apparent that the wide receiver position isn't as sought after as believed. The main reason being that most of the marquee names are locked with a Franchise Tag and don't make it to free agency, of course when they do we see outliers that aren't usually expected, as in the case of Marques Colston (2012) when he accounted for 19% of the $85,000,000 salary cap, beating out Coutrland Finnegan by a mere $500,000 in salary. Then there was Mike Wallace (2013), who even earning $21,500,000 just hit a mere 17% of the salary cap and so far has the fifth highest cap hit discussed in our series. The biggest difference between the top ten receivers vs the top ten defensive backs is how top heavy free agents are paid at the receiver position, as evident by the fiscally responsible 1% cap hit floor. Historically no one is willing to bid on a franchised receiver but one player did get a transitional tag; Antonio Bryant (2010) was won with a $7,000,000 bid. Not since have we seen a transitioned receiver. Another interesting fact is that Malcolm Floyd and Braylon Edwards have been a top five earners two years in a row (2010-2011). In 2014 we included team re-resignings (Dexter McCluster, Riley Cooper, Golden Tate) otherwise the contract floor would be a mere 1%, already lowering a historically bad year for receivers in the GML. Man looking at those FA WR over the past 5 seasons its apparent that you shouldn't count on FA to fill that need. Most of those guys aren't any good and are severely overpaid
I'm finally into my summer vacation, so yes I am a little bored but I like looking at old information. I'd be willing to do GM profile in terms of where they spend their money and such, but I wouldn't count on it... I get pretty lazy.
Maybe change it to the GML sportsman of the year award. Encourage some positive behavior around here ;p Schisno I do believe you missed my corners in your list. I have 3 making over $11 million. I went large on my secondary to compete against teams that stacked WR.
Depends, did you trade for franchise players? did you trade for free agents that were resigned to your team? Could be a reason they weren't included.
Top 10 Highest Paid Free Agent Running Backs GML (2010-2014) Once a premiere position, Running Backs have fallen on hard times. It's so bad that you can find free agent punters with equal salaries in certain years. Six to ten years ago this would have been a marquee position but with the way most NFL teams have found starters in UDFA or later in the draft, most teams aren't will to spend money on running backs, it also suffers a great deal from the biggest names being franchise tagged as well. Though Arian Foster was franchised (2012) after being tendered the previous two years, the Houston Texans wouldn't allow him to walk to the New York Jets for a $9,000,000 contract and picks #32, #95 in exchange, hence the reason Arian Foster is in our top paid free agents list as he nearly walked away from his team. Of course this is the only time a franchise tagged running back was bid on. However this year the Green Bay Packers declined to match a free agent offer on James Starks by the Baltimore Ravens and see him switch conferences for a paltry $900,000. Overall the running backs are a forgotten group with most GMs looking to the draft for their starters. I got to admit....despite being nominated in a lot of categories. There was only 2 I would have voted for myself. FA steal of the year. The mere fact that it wasn't even accidental and that I targeted him on day one of FA has to be bonus points. Becoming a Dolphin and the salary he got was just the cherries. Secondary of the year. Starters at every spot (even my 5th corner is the likely Seattle nickel starter) including depth. Only inherited 2 of the 9. Made shrewd trades including the restricted/franchise market to get it done.
Marion Barber... talk about a fall from grace... 2011, signed richest contract for RB's at $6m... 2012, $500k. Ben Tate.. 2014.. .bargain at $5m.. compared to MJD at $7m...
I just want to say that Marion Barber was coming off a 2010 campaign of 374 rush yards and 4 TDs to earn that $6,000,000 contract for 2011, of course in 2011 he would rush for 422 yards and 6 TDs. Of course for 2012 he got $500,000 not to play. Then if you look at Ahmad Bradshaw who made a million less at $5,000,000 which he earned after finishing 2010 off with 1,235 rush yards and 8 TDs and losing 6 of 7 fumbles. What did that $5,000,000 earn you? 659 rush yards and 9 TDs. Of course he earned $5,000,000 in salary but was close to half the cap% hit after coming off a 1,015 yards and 6 TD campaign. What did the $5,000,000 get you in 2013? 186 rush yards and 2 TDs. Meanwhile Larry Johnson in 2010 got you 2 rush yards on 5 attempts for $2,000,000. Of course Reggie Bush as the only other RB to earn top 5 FA contracts twice compared to Ahmad Bradshaw, was the best bargain... just look at the stats Reggie Bush 2011 - GML FA Contract: $3,500,000 (6% cap hit) 1,086 Rush Yards and 6 Rush TDs; 296 receiving yards and 1 reception TD 2013 - GML FA Contract: $4,000,000 (3% cap hit) 1,006 Rush Yards and 4 Rush TDs; 506 receiving yards and 3 reception TDs
Can you really call anything a bargain though when you pay more then any single back got in FA? If anything we overspent in GML. I mean Toby is up for free agent steal when he got no signing bonus and only $4.5 million guaranteed on 3 years at a total of $10.5 million? Running backs are the new punters ;p
