The official site is doing a count down naming the greatest player to wear each number for the dolphins. The first one (#99) is a no brainer in Jason Taylor. The second (#98) is a bit of a surprise in Odrick but when you see the list of other 98s it makes sense. 97 is a bit of a head scratched with the most notable player to wear the number being John Bosa. I thought it might be fun to pick the biggest battles. Off the top of my head 23 comes to mind as a battle between Troy Vincent and Ronnie Brown.

Suprisingly few 98s and 97s. Some better debates coming up soon.

23 was also Pat Surtain. Awesome fins number for about almost a 20 year run there.

Can't call Ronnie a bust outright. Too many great moments, and not to mention the ridiculous workload placed on him through (all purpose yards with carries and screen plays during the Saban/Cameron administrations) his early years.

But yeah, #23 belongs to Pat.

    Live from the Internet.
Was leading the league in all purpose yards before getting hurt Week 5 (or 6?) in '07. The Wildcat asshooping of the Patriots. Was actually thinking the other day if they Patritos have had their *** beat at home like that since that game, and I don't think they have.

    [edit]

Still, Pat's number, no doubt lol I wanted to make that clear.

#19 is cursed. It arguably my least favorite number as well. Ugly to look at.

Interesting question brought up by watching the video they had posted for 99. It was the All Access for Zach and Jason's induction to the honor roll. Question is... Who is the Fan's most favorite, 99 or 54? For me its Zach Thomas. Guy optimizes professional class act and is a roll model not just for football players, but anyone who whats to be a professional at anything. Plus he's a hell of a linebacker.

I've always had a special place in my heart for Zach. He's one of the few draft picks I guessed right. After Jimmy passed on Ray Lewis in the 1st, from about the 2nd-3rd round on, when Miami was on the clock, I was begging Jimmy, through the TV screen, to pick Zach every time our pick came up. Jimmy even took another LB ahead of Zach. LaCurtis Jones, who was Daryl Gardener's teammate at Baylor. I was really in agony by the 5th round and thought he was going to be taken by another team before our pick. Then, when Miami is on the clock at pick 154, here I am with my hands clenched, begging Jimmy to take Zach. When I saw his name appear on the screen as our pick, my reaction was as if we'd won the Super Bowl. Only two other draft picks ever elicited close to an equal reaction from me. Louis Oliver in 1989, and horror of horrors, James "JJ" Johnson in 1999.

Jimmy had signed Jack Del Rio in the off season to play MLB, so I guessed Zach would have to be a backup for one season. He fooled me though when early in camp Jimmy named him the starter and soon thereafter cut Del Rio who soon retired as I recall. Then reading all the stories of Zach's childhood, things like getting his head ran over accidentally, twice, by the family car, when he was about 3 or 4, and coming out of it with basically minimal damage, who couldn't help but love this guy?

I dunno if Zach wants to be an assistant coach in the NFL, but if he does it is one of the great injustices that Miami has not hired him. Even if not as lead LB coach right away. Perhaps be the Defensive QC/Asst LB coach for a few seasons.

I think you must take into account the value your franchise lost choosing a player at #2 overall who really underproduced, I don't believe bust just includes players who never produced..Did you use the resource wisely, did the player pan out for what you paid...no and no.

We drafted Ronnie at No. 2 ahead of Antrel Rolle, Carlos Rogers, DeMarcus Ware, Derrick Johnson and Aaron Rodgers which makes me thinking what if...

But nonetheless it's a little bit harsh to call Ronnie a bust. He rushed for over 4'800 yards for us (4.2 ypc), scored 36 TD's and was a two time Pro Bowler. And weren't the four rushing TD's and the TD Pass to Fasano in that 2008 upset against the mighty Patriots priceless?

Every freekin pick for every freekin team can be looked back on and every freekin player can be judged with hindsight and the crystal ball comes out. Its beginning to grate. Drop it!! Not on you EverFin as it seems to be the norm nowadays. Its just a waste of time and pointless. Go with what the Phins did or what they do. Then judge.
Agree about Ronnie. Not a bust. He was ok. In his 1st season or 2 he broke tackles and made yds after the 1st hit. He wasnt utilized enough in the passing game but like i say..its bye the bye now.

Everyone has their own definition, but to me, if you don't even try to sign your top 5 pick to a long term extension it's a bust.

    Agreed.

Also, why I call him close to a bust is because he didn't reach his potential and it wasn't anyone else's fault but his own, he chose a lifestyle, he wasn't smart enough to understand how the body and craft need to coexist, he didn't understand how the body is the vehicle and how it needs to be fueled with nitrous and trained on a race track.

Fair enough. Before his injury it looked like he was reaching elite HB status under Cameron. Who knows what happens if he doesn't get hurt. Thats one big reason I can't call him a bust. His injury certainly derailed his career at least short term, and the shelf life of a HB is already short.

I don't think Ronnie Brown ever had particularly good vision as a ball carrier. The guy had the power and the quickness to bail himself out of questionable situations, but that faded and so did his ability to be a quality runner.

Watching Ricky Williams at the same time with Brown was kind of night and day in that regard.

funny how you look at the numbers in the 90s, most if not all of them are from the mid 1980s and on.

When we took Ronnie, my hope was that we would trade down and take Rodgers, who was then projected to go around #10. Of course, I had no idea how good Rodgers would eventually become like anyone else did, but I thought #2 was high for a RB.

Still, Brown had multiple good seasons totally derailed by injuries. He was starting to tear it up in 06 before he broke his hand between two helmets at Detroit on Thanksgiving. I think that he was leading all rb in yards from scrimage in 07 when he blew out his knee trying to make a tackle after a turnover. Then he'd been playing well again in 09 when he ha the lisfranc injury in 09.

I'm not sure when the number policy exactly went into effect in the 70s, but for whatever reason, players avoided the high numbers before that point.

Still the only active player I ever bought a Jersey for. And the only one I haven't ripped the name plate off of and made anonymous. Ive got a 8 23 29 a few 13s oh I take it back. I still have a Williams 34. Jake Scott v Marino is the biggest debate. They shoulda retired 13 before Dan the man ever got to wear it.

Yeah that ones really not debatable for me either. But the 80s wont be that exciting except for the marks so I figure the 70s are where some lively debate will begin.

Now that I think about it, 75 is harder for me to decide than 85. While Duper was a fine WR, Nick is a HOF LB and the leader of the No Name Defense. So it has to be Nick. As for 75, both Manny and Betters represented the number very well for many years, and IMO one cannot go wrong with either one, though Manny was on the Super Bowl winners and really deserved to be MVP in the win of the Skins.
