I may not like his behavior off the field or even his involvement in the Martin scandal last year, but that doesn't mean that he still wasn't the best offensive lineman the Dolphins had last year, by far.

Right now the Dolphins don't have a single offensive lineman on their roster who can step in and be anywhere close to the productive center Pouncey has been for the Dolphins. Staring five new starters on opening day on the offensive line is going to be a major concern for the Dolphins, IMO. It was going to be tough enough with four new starters, but losing their best offensive lineman for probably the first month of the regular season, if not longer, is going to have a serious impact on the overall productivity of the offense in 2014.

Mike Pouncey supposedly has been fighting through this "all through spring" and nobody has noticed him ailing except for the first day of Mini Camp when he took it easy and didn't participate. He went on to fully participate in Day 2 and Day 3 of Mini Camp.

That tells me that there is a very strong possibility that the team believed his injury to be manageable. It leaves a pretty solid potential for Pouncey to have had the surgery because he disagreed and thought the surgery was best for him in the long term.

Do we know that to be the case? Of course not. But I think it would just as foolish to pretend that the mere presence of the tear means surgery was definitely the only option. We don't know that either.

    Can't really blame him though.

That and we have no idea how effective he'd be if he tried to play through it.

Yeah, but A-Rod was like 63 or something when he had that surgery.

I agree... and not to try and extinguish any torches or dull the pitchforks, but everyone needs to wait and see how this plays out as we really have no idea the extent of the injury is or what kind of surgery Pouncey had.

There is a lot about this story that we still don't know, but Pouncey participated in the OTAs and scrimmage, so it sounds minor and that this was mostly a preventative type surgery so as not to risk long term issues.

If this procedure was a simple clean up that only required a scope, then recall that Marshall had the same surgery done mid-June of 2009 and he was fine for the season. The worst case as CK pointed out, is a torn labrum similar to what Harvin had last year where Seattle put him on the PUP list.

I prefer to just wait to see what the FO does in the next few days as an indicator of the extent and impact on the team. If they sign a veteran to a one year deal, then chances are the surgery was more invasive and Pouncey will probably end up on the PUP. If they just sign another guy to take his spot on the roster who isn't a center or guard, it probably was only a simple scope where they feel he will play this season and they'll let the younger guys and backups handle the job until he returns.

Let's assume we already exercised his option. Would we want him to tough it out, potentially risk greater injury and play at less then 100% We all saw how that worked out for Long. Like you the cynic in me says it may be contract related but its just as likely not to be related at all.

Pouncey play through kidney stones last season though... not sure I agree on the contract angle. By all accounts he was in great shape and having a solid off-season.

I didn't read the whole thread so I'm sorry if this has been brought up already, is it possible that this injury is a cover excuse for his counseling and possibly also a suspension?

And is one of the better centers in the league. 2nd rounder out of Oregon, and I was hoping we'd draft him in 2009. All Pro in 2012. 2x to the Pro Bowl.

Oops a daisy John M, I guess your point wasn't much of a point at all. :)

Who is out there to fill in for a one year deal at center? Looks like a must to find one even if Pouncys injury is short term we need a good backup to be ready for the worst case scenario. Good thing is Pouncy let the team know before season opener.

I think we need to seriously consider this option. He has played center before and was good at it, and great at it in college. **** it let's do it! Forgive and forget, live and learn!

Don't let Richie Incognito anywhere near this roster. Take your cue from the entire NFL which has decided to this point that they do not want Richie Incognito. Overrated on the field, and a complete flipping disaster off the field.

The popular option amongst available players seems to be Fernando Velasco, who filled in for Maurkice Pouncey in 2013. But I think the Dolphins are going to want to take a look at some of their other players first before they go there.

One of those roster options could be to shift Shelley Smith to that spot. John Benton loves the guy. I think it's notable that at every media practice, Shelley Smith has taken a turn at center. We've not seen Smith at the center position since he joined the NFL but Benton has experience with Shelley and if he thinks he can play there, I trust him.

And who knows? When you move Shelley over, maybe you discover the guy that could be our center for the next 7 or 8 years. It would certainly be one way that you can emphasize his strengths while covering up his weakness.

I agree with this - don't touch Richie Incognito with a barge pole. I'd certainly be interested in seeing what options players currently on the roster present. After all, we've seen them win games with Nate Garner playing center.

As it relates to Shelley Smith, if they do move him over, I wonder if that opens up the door for Billy Turner at RG? He did speak about it after the rookie-only camp that they were keeping him at left guard to get him settled, but were going to teach him both sides. It'd certainly keep the athleticism on par despite Pouncey's absence.

At this point we're beyond thinking about "ideal".

My question though is why can't Dallas Thomas move? He's in his 2nd year and he played guard in the SEC. Billy Turner is in his 1st year and he played only tackle in the FCS. Why are we putting it on the rookie to make that kind of move and not the experienced guy?

Agreed on Richie. Don't want him back.

I'd see if Travelle Wharton is interested in playing another year. Especially if Smith can play center.

Or we end up with Albert, D. Thomas, Smith, B. Turner, James on the OL. You're left with two questionable guards instead of just 1.

Did someone just seriously suggest bringing back Richie Incognito? Seriously? Seriously? SERIOUSLY? For reals? You're not kidding? This is not a joke?

Because this coaching staff makes some very bizarre evaluations.

Fair point, though I could see the staff doing that because they may have "settled" on Dallas Thomas being the left guard. How many times has he said that he's finally found a home, is settled, etc?

I mean, I like Billy Turner's odds moving there better than I do guys like Sam Brenner, David Arkin, and even Nate Garner.

Nate Garner has no natural position. He would probably be the favorite to fill in at right guard if Shelley Smith were to be moved.

Part of the reason Smith would move would be because of his familiarity with the OL coach John Benton's blocking system. You need to be able to trust the center.

Honestly I've always considered right guard a possibility for JaWuan James so if you thought Bryant McKinnie could play right tackle you could move James in to right guard. That's not a tough switch.
