True test of a GM is also finding late rd and UDFA talent, cheap to acquire, cheap to pay, saves cap and conserves draft resources.

Say what folks will about Ireland he did do a good job of that aspect of talent acquisition.

    Rds 1-3 tho..just poor performance.

Imo, Miami is not a good situation for a head coach with experience, incredible distractions, no Home field advantage, poor football culture.

But, I want the guy who wants this job, it tells me that he isn't afraid of challenges.

Well, we do have Matt Moore on the roster, we pretty much know what he can do on the field, for me though, stick w/Tannehill.

Do have to admit, Moore to Wallace..deep down field...

unless it's an Injury under no circumstances do I go that route, Tannehill is gonna have to show us, THIS year, that he's a good enough Qb to win a championship..can't have doubts..

I saw what I needed to see last year, dealing with all that crap and still having a solid season/nearly making the playoffs. I think those last two games have people forgetting about what happened in the first 14.

Well on one hand I'm happy to hear that you don't have any doubts, cause I respect your opinion and I know your watching the film to make your conclusions.

However, my doubts come in this sense, I know ryan can win games, but my doubts come from playoff intensity football when the pocket gets more constricted and there is more emphasis on quicker body movement and playmaking ability out of that position..

I hear you, there were times last year that I wanted to jump thru the screen and choke Tannehill for doing his statue in the pocket thing. I think that was deliberate tactic being employed by the team (coaches? RT himself?) more than sign of RT's inability to move around and make plays, a tactic that I hope is discarded. As long as RT is mindful or protecting himself there's no reason to not force defenses to account for his legs, be it with a spy or a more deliberate/disciplined pass rush.

I'd also like to see him improve with pre-snap reads and setting his own protections, he's gradually taken on more of that responsibility so I'm encouraged there. I'd also like to see him manipulating coverage with his eyes and body movement more often.

Our defense was also 8th in points allowed (4th through 8th allowed 19-21 pts a game). Our offense, not so good (27th). A middle of the road scoring offense and we're in the playoffs solidly.

Now, it's not all Ryan's fault of course. But other QBs faced worse on-field performance. He did okay. He could have wilted under pressure, and he didn't. But he could have excelled, and didn't. He's real streaky right now. Those last two games were in addition to a few stinkers sprinkled through the season and some good ones too. If he gets to Matt Ryan level of play I'd be very happy

Philbin and Hickey's fate should be tied together considering Philbin is the only reason Hickey got the job in the place. **** Hickey picking our next head coach, no way I'm down to go that route again, forcing a GM on a coach again.

Knowing our dumb *** owner he might actually think he could convince a Harbaugh or Cowher to work with Hickey.

After he fumbled in the NOLA game he was pretty much rooted in the pocket.

We've already had a whole decade in the abyss...so my new outlook is "Can't get much worse" before the season (as well as "At least they aren't the Browns"). I think pretty much everything that could happen to the franchise has happened, save for an asteroid hitting the stadium.

The first thing you do is fire Philbin and his coaching staff.

One hour later, you put a $10 million dollar check on Gus Malzahn's desk and beg him to come.

If he says 'no', throw another $2 million dollar check on his desk and tell him to pack his bags for Miami.

I am so confident in Malzahn that i really don't give a damn who the GM is. He's that good.

It's not an unreasonable expectation for a GM to get more than one year, but this isn't normal circumstances.

Hickey was at best the third or fourth option of the team. He was not a sexy GM candidate, and the position wasn't particularly palatable to most candidates given the requirements posed by the owner. He does not have the normal expectation of job security. If(when) Philbin goes, there is going to be pressure on Ross to find a big name candidate, and those are people this team has repeatedly scared away by attempting to piecemeal an organizational structure together.

Sure, he's uninspiring rather than outright bad, but when you're uninspiring in basically every capacity as a coach besides running practices and minding your P's and Q's, you don't really have a leg to stand on.

    You hire Mahlzahn/Harbaugh.

But this scenario will not unfold because this team is winning 11+ games and going to the playoffs.

Can we wait until Miami at least looks bad in the first preseason game before we jump off the deep end?

I don't know that they will be bad. I think there is a distinct possibility that they surprise a lot of people and wind up with a winning season. I just don't think Philbin and Tannehill can survive a losing season.

Miami seemingly always looks "bad" in the first preseason game unless Ryan Tannehill throws 50/50 for 2,500 yards and 14 TDs on the opening drive. :shifty:

What in the world are you talking about? A QB carries the team...EVERY time! Oh wait...dude earlier said Harbaugh carried the Niners...but that can't be right, the GM carries the Ravens. OH HELL, another coach up in N.E. carries his team, or is it the QB?

    By the way, I agree.

I'll be the negative Nancy here and say 10 wins and a 5th seed!

That said, if the wheels do in fact come off and they're below 9 wins, I can't see Philbin coming back, and I'd prefer Gus over Harbaugh. JH is an inspirational guy, no doubt, but that team is always on the edge of criminality and stupidity, and that's exactly what the Dolphins are trying to get away from, considering last season. I believe he'd get us into the post-season though.

Our new GM went after good people in the draft. Not just good players. As long as they don't fall on their face (and I fully expect our 1 and 2 picks to prove their worth this year), Hickey will be around.

I feel like people predicting 10-11 wins haven't looked at our schedule. The NFL changes year to year and there are no guarantees, but this is a pretty brutal looking schedule at the moment.

I thought sports was the way to get away from the more sobering aspects of life, not where people go to purposely depress themselves. What am I missing?

I'm not comparing to last year, but other than the AFCE like we always do, the Packers, Bears, Chiefs look tough. San Diego is always a good team but we always seem to beat them most years. Doesn'tlook brutal to me. Plus I don't put a lot of stock into SOS before the season begins. Too much movement in power rankings from one year to next. End of season SOS is more valuable to me than preseason.

NFC North is equal to NFC south in terms of toughness. Maybe more so. And 3/4 AFC west teams made the playoffs last year. I'd say it's tougher.

I generally put zero stock into preseason SOS. I am not even a big fan of looking more than 2 weeks away from gameday. Way too many variables.

It might be tougher, however it could be a lot easier. There is a lot of football to be played between now and then. A lot of players stepping up, a lot of players getting suspended, and a lot of players getting hurt.

Even if you go by last years schedule to look at this years games, AFC West is only one team stronger than AFC Central, at best. However the flex games went from the Colts and the Chargers to the Jaguars and the Ravens. That is a huge downgrade in SoS.

If you compare going into last season and going into this season, I would say last season looked more difficult.

I dunno, I'd say the NFC South is the 2nd best division in the league when Atlanta isn't decimated by injury. The Falcons, Panthers and Saints are all legit contenders, Tampa is quite talented too, we'll have tro see what Lovie can do down there.

Neither slate is easy but overall I'd rather play the North, especially since we're getting GB and Chicago early in the season.

    Ross is NOT acting!

Seriously though, for a man who has made so much money, Ross just seems clueless about how to find the right people to build/manage a successful NFL team. If we tank this season, then I want to see a clean sweep of GM and Coach. Not fair, but so it goes in the NFL.

I do believe Tanny is just an average OL away from having a really good year though. Which should get us 9 or 10 wins and a playoff spot.

I did. Because it seems a natural extension to the Dion Jordan and Tannehill getting dissed threads. As I said I don't know who the coach GM choices are and there are many smart people on this forum who have a much better idea than me. It's a worse case scenario thread. If you want the alternative go start 'our ceiling if everything is a-ok' thread.
