My question: Should individuals be limited to the organized sports they are allowed to play based on gender?

But mark my words... The first time she's smacked on the *** after making a good play there will be a lawsuit for sexual harrassment.

I don't think that an individual should be included or excluded from any organized sport activity based solely on their gender. IMO, a team should be composed of the most capable out of all who want to participate.

I'm sure they're keeping her out b/c if she gets hurt, lawsuits will fly. It's a delicate subject but I don't think she should be unallowed to play.

it depends on the sport. you have issues like what colorado mentioned, size issues, all sorts of other legal issues.

in this case i don't think the school is trying to be oppressive, they are just trying to avoid opening a door to a host of other lawsuit possibilities.

    probably a good call.

eventually they'll be a precedent and it will be allowed, but at a great social divestiture by the school that permits it.

This is something I always had a problem with when they had whats her name on the pga tour. Would they ever allow a man to play on the lpga tour?

I have no problem with letting whomever play if they can take it. I have a problem with it not being equal integration.

    that's an unfair comparison.

leagues like the LPGA and WNBA were created because women can't play in professional PGA & NBA leagues. As it sits those two womens leagues are not even equal to the male equivalents in terms of exposure, salary, and purse sizes (pun intended).

now if there was a sport that only women played and men weren't allowed to play, then you'd have a case.

Not really. Integration is integration. If you are going to attempt to integrate the mens only league then why not attempt to integrate the womens only league as well. Exposure, salary and purse size have nothing to do with equal integration.

The reason they have "girls" leagues, is because they are prohibited from playing on "boys" teams. Right?

Girl leagues? What freaking girl football league are you referring to

My stepson had a girl on his Pop Warner team when he was....I think 10 or 11. She was as tough as any of the boys. Played DT and was a serious force

BTW: For those claiming lawsuit, there is a WAIVER. Boys sign it and so do girls. No biggy.

At that age, and with no cuts (That is if you pay, you play) she should DEFINATELY be able to play.

    you completely missed the point.

why would men want to play in the womens' leagues of golf and basketball? the womens' versions of those leagues were created b/c women could not play in the mens' versions. They are lesser leagues with poorer exposure, lesser wages, and smaller purses. again, why on EARTH would a man want to compete in those bodies?

i think we're talking on a professional-sport level here. there are intramurals for volleyball all over the place. I've played for a military team in volleyball. while there are some "professional" volleyball players, i don't think this is in the same dynamic or realm as the other professional sports we're talking about here. volleyball doesn't have a "league" on the national/international stage like the NBA, NHL, NFL, PGA, etc....

No, I did not. And just because some one may not want to play, does not justify it not occurring.
And I am sure there are golfers who are not in the pga tour who wouldn't mind the little exposure and money in the lpga.
My point is if the LPGA did not allow a man to play on its tour, how is that more justified then the pga not allowing women to play in their tour?
You are just trying to find justifications.

I agree with all the points you've made thus far. Its apparent that when you look at all of the major women's sports leagues/teams they have been created because women were excluded from the men's sports. No women in NBA = WNBA, no women in PGA = LPGA, and women's college sports resulted from their exclusion in men's college sports. So the argument that men can't get into women's leagues is strange to me as each major women's sport has a men's counterpart that led to the creation of the women's league in the first place. Basically it seems as if the major women's sports leagues were just consolation prizes given to women athletes to keep them quite while the men's sports teams keep raking in the money.

So if a woman wants to play in a sporting event with men then she should be able too and once she joins she should have equal rights to the men with no special privileges (getting a but smack shouldn't be a problem).

Girls, if they can take it, should be able to play "boys" sports. I have an 11 year old son who would love nothing more than for little "Muffy" to line up across the line from him so he could tattoo her. But if she is capable of playing the sport, taking the hit, etc... then by all means, LET HER PLAY!! If we could possibly have a woman as Commander in Chief some day, why can't we have girls in sports?

and i think you are arguing just for the sake of arguing.

if a man wants to play golf, he can play in the PGA. the LPGA exists because women can't play in the PGA. same thing for basketball. If a man wants to play basketball, he can play in the NBA.

if you look at the original topic for discussion, it has to do with a girl wanting to play a sport for which there is nothing setup for girls. a lot of schools have what's called "powder puff" for girls football, but it's not a sanctioned league really.... just a stop-gap to let girls play.

also what needs to be added is that we don't know the full details of the story.... there could be other factors that make the school/team disallow her from playing that we don't know about.

    And how many Tackle leagues?

I completely understand at a competitive level, where justified cuts are made due to lack of talent. That is entirely different all-together.

This is a 10 year old. Let the girl play. She will pay her fees just like the rest of the kids.

If she isnt tough enough or whatever, she won't make it through the grueling 5-6 weeks of mandatory conditioning to begin with

In the case example I saw first hand, Anna was more than tough enough to handle it. Guess what, she only played two years..and with no regrets. She can say she did it and went on with life.

FOR THE RECORD (I know I am gonna get much crap about this) My UNM Lobos had a female place-kicker last year. She wasnt great, but not bad..also, she was a transfer from Colorado State University

    Not the same bro.

First this is 10 year olds. And as stated, usually already physically ahead of their counterparts.

Also, we are NOT talking about an entire Woman's team..just a few that have been standing up and knocking boys down all their lives. :wink2:

While in general I would agree, however, I'm thinking...(in my dirty old man mind)

Wrestling: Ooo! I like wrestling girls! That would be enjoyable. Think of all the touching.

Football: Well, I didn't mean to grab her ***, I was just trying to tackle her. And, can you imagine the fondling attempts at the bottom of a pile up? Shoulder pads would probably cover breast issues-although I still imagine it would hurt. Future reproductive issues from getting hit in the stomach all the time? Can you say lawsuit?

Baseball: No physical contact, no problem.

Volleyball: No problem, but the power difference at the higher levels of play negates most women's ability to play on those teams.

Golf: Go for it. No contact.

Ice Hockey: Do you really want to see a woman get into a fight with one of those "enforcers?"

    Swimming: Sure. No problem.

    Just my thoughts.

Actually, there are professional volleyball leagues out there.

    http://www.fivb.org/
    http://web.avp.com/index.jsp
    http://volleyball.org/index.html

Some of those leagues are overseas. But if you don't get the chance to hone your skills at the lower levels, you won't ever be able to break into those leagues.

And, just so folks know, World Cup Volleyball is broadcast on TV in Japan all the time. There actually is a following of the sport.

Ok...off the point of the thread, but my point being is that if you have the reverse situation in a location, there needs to be a way to accomodate a man's interest in a sport that is only offered for women in an area.

Military intramural leagues are fun (been coaching for over 10 years), but not even close to the level that the big boys want to aspire to.
