All coaches are different. That game, in that situation, that's rex ryans wheelhouse. The man is the best motivator in the game. I knew hed get his guys hyped and playing with their hair on fire in that situation. However, I think rex isnt that great at the daily grind of being a hc. His clock management sucks, certainly doesnt handle young qbs well, his teams are always defensive minded thus lacking on offense.

Philbin is way more level headed. Believes that steady play and smart decisions will win out.

If I needed to win 1 game, rex is the way to go. Its what makes him a great playoff coach. But notice his team has never won the division, or was even close? The man needs the bulletin board material. Unfortunately the schedule makers put us against them in week 17 again, so we'll see if philbin changes anything this year

Your coming in late thinking and generalizing my theory Scotty..

My theories go much deeper then you are painting..if you want to get into then start a thread about it..there's plenty of threads explaining the details already..

I tivo'd the game, watched it multiple time last year, haven't gone back recently, what your point?, that we were close and should of won it if it weren't for a few mistakes, or plays from our guys, that the score didn't indicate the game itself?

I remember this distinctly, they played with more attitude and they played a more physical style of ball, in our park..

I was hoping for more than just generalities.

If RT hits Wallace on the stutter go it's 14-0. If Hartline doesn't get hurt in the 1st, leaving us with Wallace, Matthews and Moore as our only receivers. If RM doesn't drop the crossing route before half time he might still be running, if MW doesn't fall down on the out cut allowing a gift INT in the red zone.

Brandon Fields played the worst game of his life, multiple chances to pin NY inside the 10 and he blew every one of them.

Bottom line one we didn't make the plays when they were there and we got beat. All the motivation, lack of fire, etc, I'm sorry those are platitudes that get broken out only after the result is already known.

If they had come out and played the entire game with more heart, sense of urgency and physicality they would of been able to withstand some mistakes, they didnt and it snowballed, their weak frame of mind crumbled at home in front of 15,000 jet fans.

Also, all we could muster up is 7 points in both games, I know that's a big generality.

I don't see how you can question a team's heart when they're in every game except for one. The Jets game they were severely short handed on offense. The Bills game, you have the team who allowed the most sacks on the road vs the team who piled up the most sacks, in high winds and freezing rain. It's not hard to imagine the offense would struggle, but the defense played hard the whole day. I can't question the effort in either case, the team just didn't play well. IMO.

    They didn't play well??

    Because Hartline got injured?

Because the bills had a dominating matchup on their Dline?

Because of the skills Theo Harris and Geno smith..?

    Mental exhaustion?

Because Hartline got injured, leaving us with Wallace, Matthews and Moore. Our base offense was the 3 wide set and those are the only receivers we had. Moore shouldn't be on the field at all, Matthews shouldn't be a #2 for any passing team, both of them had to play more snaps than they should ever play and they still had to play special teams. Hartline was RTs most reliable target and was getting the best of Cromartie for most of the 1st quarter. So yeah I'd say his getting injured was a big deal.

Geno Smith probably had his best game of the season, made a couple plays, didn't make the big mistake that he'd been making for most of the year. Still, they only put up 20 points. Hardly insurmountable if the offense had carried their weight.

Thad Lewis sucks. I think he had two or three good passes all game. But unlike RT he had viable run game to fall back on, Buffalo finished 1st or 2nd in rushing yards for the year IIRC. Again, 19 points ain't much if the offense had played better.

I think you're looking for intangible explanations when there are concrete factors right there in front of you.

Man, it's depressing. When I watched the TOP 100 players of 2014. When they show Darius and especially K. Williams, like every highlight is against Miami and sacking Tanne.

Bro, the game is not just won and lost like your depicting..your analysis is all X's and O's, sometimes the game comes down to motivation, who tougher, and who's willing to go 60 mins hard..

So your reasoning is we lost our #2 receiver and stating that Geno smith had his best game against our very healthy defense at home..

Deej, I've read your theories. I've read the new stadium threads. I don't disagree entirely with your thinking, fans feed off players feed off fans feed of players. It's a circle. Average players, average crowd noise. When things go well it picks up. When not going well the crowd get quiet and restless. Good players, more success, more noise. That's your starting points. You want people to cheer, give them something to cheer about.

Sometimes that is the case. More often the better x and o's team wins. The guys who all played to their best on that particular day. We played some great games and we played some stinkers last year. We need to bring our baseline performance up. More good days, less bad.

Well yeah, but that simple fact gets lost consistently around here.

I mean I've heard that because we lost that Buffalo game that it was Philbin's fault for being a horrible motivator and/or tactician. That it was Tannehill's fault for any number of reasons. Or it was because we had injuries. When in the end, all year, we couldn't run and couldn't stop the run and that was a personnel issue.

I think we would be swept by Buffalo no matter what last year as long as we had the same oline & front 7. I think the problem with the mentality of the team came in the Jets game. I think the team was simply demoralized and spent. I think Philbin and the team leaders did an AMAZING job pulling the team back from losing a lot to beat the Bengals, only to be leveled with the scandal. Then they did another amazing job getting the players refocused and to right the ship after the scandal to actually go on and beat the Pats and put destiny in their own hands.

But then, Buffalo happened and as I said, we were never going to beat Buffalo with that roster. We're an overall better team then them across the league, it just so happened their greatest strength exploits our greatest weakness. But that was it. We had no time to recover and turn it around.

We lost Binns, Keller, Gibson and Hartline. The OL was bad, the run game was just as bad if not worse. If you think heart and motivation can make up for that then I dunno what to tell you.

Lol yeah I'm sure our OL could have dominated Williams-Dareus-Williams-Hughes etc if they had just tried harder. C'mon man.

Im not saying motivation doesn't play a role but you're implying that we were the better team but lost bc we didn't play hard and after studying the games I totally disagree.

On the flip side, you're depicting that any team can win every game if they just simply "want" it more.

Again, there is an emotional side to the game that is important. The x's and o's are extremely important though. Its like stats and tape are both important.

I don't know why so many people want to pretend its always one thing OR the other.

We didn't have the personnel to beat Buffalo and that left the team emotionally spent and flat against the Jets after everything else they had been through.

See, both aspects contributed to the loses.

We also have to stop pretending that a Head Coach is an endless source of inspiration that can make his team overcome anything. If that were true Rex would have had a ring for each finger by now. Shula didn't win EVERY game and Super Bowl, you know. Can they motivate yes? Yes absolutely. Can it be the difference in a game? Yes. Is it the difference in every game? No.

There's no one thing that's a key to consistently winning or losing.

Well unless we can watch a game side by side and show each other what it is we think were the reasons were going in circles,I thought I noticed a lack of emotion and physicality in the two games which led to the stuff your talking about..I can see the matchup on the oline demoralizing the team early, but, defensively we must fight tooth and nail when we know were outmatched on that side of the ball..I didn't see that, and quite frankly it wasn't close to a fight.

Buffalo beat us because their strength happened to match up with our weakness (DL vs OL)

Still, we shouldn't have lost the first game. The second game was complete domination on their part though.

Looking forward to payback this season.

You know who can run the ball pretty well too? Patriots. Even better ypc than Buffalo. They also sack the QB as well - sure their Dline isn't as imposing as Buffalos but top 5 in sacks, the bulk of it from their front, and they're not graded that far behind Buffalo's. Oh yeah, their QB is slightly better too.

They beat them. Didn't beat Buffalo or the Jets. No excuses. None of this "don't match up well" stuff. They don't match up well against the Patriots either. They score a lot, the Dolphins don't. ;) It's one thing to play a tight game against a lesser opponent and lose, because your strengths and weaknesses don't match up well. It's another to get shut out 19-0. It was their first shutout in two years. It was more than matchups. The Dolphins didn't show up. They might have tried their hardest, but on any given day your hardest is different.

Good post. I tend to stay in the middle between measurables and intangibles, because people can get carried away with either one. Still, there was something amiss in a big way for those last 2 games, and I tend to put it in the "intangibles" column.

That and the coaches weren't in it either. Remember that safety (or CB or LB) blitzing around the LT for back to back sacks, and they didn't adjust anything? Dude just lined up in the SAME SPOT and BAM. Same result, not blocked, etc.

They weren't in that game from jump...even worse in the NY game. Overall, it seemed they mailed it in...starting with the coaches on down. Did they come off the win against the Pats on a high, treating it like their Super Bowl and let down the next two weeks? Sure felt that way.

Can't speak for Deej of course, but what I saw along those lines was a serious lack of physicality in the overall play of the team...they didn't seem fired up to be playing for their playoff lives. Tanny's injury and others being knicked up didn't help either I'm sure...but they just looked completely flat...particularly after the excitement they played with in the Pats game.

Its pretty odd for a team to just lay down w the playoffs on the line but that's what you guys are suggesting. Personally, I think it's a convenient excuse to explain why they didn't meet expectations vs the lowly Bills and Jets. I mean, no way we could lose to those guys right? Had to be some strange phenomenon that occured. Couldn't be that we just got beat...

Side note: Baltimore had the same win and in scenario we did and they got massacred at home by NE then lost badly to Cincy. The Chargers got in on their OT win at home vs a Chiefs team that was resting their starters, iirc they basically lost the game but the refs disallowed a game winning FG that should of counted.

I thought we controlled the game for most of the first half, woulda been up 14-0 if RT hits Wallace on the stutter go. It was 7-7 late in the half when Matthews dropped the easiest pass he'll ever see in an NFL game. Then Fields shanks a punt, then the Jets score before halftime. We just didn't play well IMO. I'd have to see a blowout before I start questioning guys heart and professionalism.

So in a pressure, do or die situation, a few normally solid players made uncharacteristic mistakes. Couple that with RT's being knicked up, and I can see your point. Still felt like they were out-hustling us the whole game.

Pretty big drop from a few weeks before when we slaughtered them at NY. You'da thought they'd won the game in NY the way they were flying around fired up.

GM, when you play in our stadium, there's a sh@&load of roads I could go down, the coach has to do an extraordinary job of getting the team to play with a sense of urgency..

Mindset plays a role in football games all the time..the goal is to have your team frothing at the mouth when controlling your own fate is on the line.

Reasons for not playing well against a team that's out of the picture against a team that has everything on the line, are usually mental related, focus related, motivational related type things..

physicality wears you down eventually if your not mentally ready to fight, or your not pissed off enough..

Did anybody hear of RT working with a personal QB coach this off-season? I know many great QBs do that, couldn't hurt, so why not try it?

IMHO, they could drill pocket evasiveness to where it becomes second nature, and get his deep ball to a point where he can see the play better...meaning improve his vision of what it's supposed to be like and get that ingrained in his head.

I know reports are that in the closed practices he was hitting Wallace much more than last year's practices, so I was just wondering if tutoring had anything to do with it.

Nobody is suggesting they were laying down. But they weren't into it. Ever lift weights? Some days the weights feel so light and then the very next week you can't even lift the same amount? Energy, momentum etc. They didn't have it.
