I'll still hit the gin mill, talk to real people, maybe find some new friends and check out good looking women (without being creppy about it).

Ask for someone in "retention." Those people help the most. I had DirecTV for years.

Even if you still have a year on contract?

Another tidbit: We've had problems with their "on demand" service several times and made several customer service calls because of them, and they went so far as to say that because we had so many complaints, we would have grounds to back out of the contract if we wanted. Other than the on demand service, our experience with them has been stellar.

Oh yeah, we used to get at least half the Dolphins games in NY, they would usually put them on TV whenever they could for a non-local game. They still do show them, but over the past 3 or 4 years its been less often in favor of the Steelers/Patriots/Broncos.

It's about getting the right person with the right amount of power. Retention agents (whatever they call them) have a lot of power. If there was a hint that you could back out of the contract, use that to your advantage. I was under contract and called and whined that they were giving Sunday Ticket for free to new subscribers. They gave me a slight discount. I called back later and whined some more to a different person and they gave it to me for free. If you back out of the contract, what do they get? $200? If they give you a deal and you stay with them for another several years, they get a lot more than $200.

n.b. I did this several years ago. I don't have DirecTV now and you don't want to know why.

That's pure bull. The reason it's cheaper is because our government doesn't allow channels to be exclusive. This means nearly all cable providers (some independants don't offer it yet) carry Sunday Ticket. Rogers, Bell, Telus, Shaw, Cogeco, MTS, Eastlink, Novus etc etc.

Toronto would make a very solid home for a non Buffalo Bills NFL team. Too many people are looking at the Bills in Toronto series wrong. We don't take kindly to missteps in the beginning around here (see Target's hugely disappointing move into Canada) and that happened with rediculous overpriced tickets. People stopped paying attention right there. 15-20% of Bills home games are already Canadians so they weren't about to pay for jacked up prices. Also in the beginning people were being forced to buy preseason tickets just to get the regular season one.

Plus without a team of our own....most people in the area already have allegiance to various other teams. In my family alone we have Dolphin, Vikings, Chiefs, Bills, Titans & Steelers fans. Unfortunately, due to many east coasters who move down here we also have a lot of *ugh* Patriots fans around.

Most of the vocal screaming you hear is from CFL fans scared of the NFL harming their team. It also has to compete with Hockey which IS #1 in the area (although the NFC championship games both beat a Toronto/Montreal Hockey Night in Canada ratings).

    Ratings example on that weekend:

    1. NFL, 49ers at Seahawks, Sunday, CTV: 2,664,000
    2. NHL, Canadiens at Leafs, Saturday, CBC: 2,439,000
    3. NFL, Patriots at Broncos, Sunday, CTV: 2,219,000
    4. NHL, Flames at Canucks, Saturday, CBC: 1,378,000
    5. NHL, Rangers-Sens/Oilers-Jets, Saturday, CBC: 926,000

Basically a long winded way of saying "Yes" Canada does care about the NFL...it just cares about Hockey more.

Seriously? How long have you had it? Because they charge me the regular price every year...and every year around this time I call and say I'm going to cancel if they don't lower the price. Actually, I have to do that tomorrow...now that I think about it. It's a pain though; been doing this for 5 or 6 years now.

Edit- I just read the other posts and saw that numerous people had the same questions. Here's what I do, call 1-800-531-5000 and tell them you want to cancel. It doesn't matter if you're under contract or not, because it's only a $150-300 contract fee to break it (depending on what year you signed the contract). Tell them you want to cancel your account, and you'll be put through to a "customer retention specialist" that has the power to literally cut your bill in half. When they ask why you're not happy, just say it's too expensive and you don't feel like you get enough value for your money.

Be polite though- nobody likes helping a jerk and you'll do a lot better if you're friendly and kind. These particular agents give away stuff all day, every day, it's their actual job...so you don't need to be a jerk or anything to get results. I basically say, "What can you offer me to stay?" After they list off some things, I'll add, "Is that really the best you can do? I appreciate it, but I still think my local cable would be the more affordable way to go." By the end of the call, you'll have all the premium movie channels free for 6 months, waived fees on all of your equipment, account credits and possibly even a Visa gift card (I got one for $200 two years ago because I mentioned Dish was doing that).

Anyway, let me know how it goes.

A device that you hook up to your cable box or TV at home, which will take whatever is on your tv and broadcast it over the internet. You can login to it anywhere with an internet connection and watch what is on your tv from a remote location.
