Of all the criticisms of Ryan Tannehill that are extremely overblown (e.g. deep ball), this is the one that bothers me the most. It's bothered me since college and it has bothered me in the pros.

Why does Tannehill have entire days like this? He's got an inordinately high percentage of games where he personally commits 3+ turnovers. That has been a persistent phenomenon from college to rookie year to second year. And practices like today where he's picked off 3 times and he clearly struggles, don't help us believe he's going to be more consistent. You can't have your franchise quarterback essentially be a 1 out of 4 gamble to go out into the game and turn the ball over himself 3+ times.

I saw some movement from him that gave me an inclination that his rehab might be shorter than the pundits have been saying, this gives me even a bit more hope..

Well you can win like that, look at Eli, Flacco, Brees, etc. But your QB has to also be throwing multiple TDs in those games and not just be putting up stinkers like Ryan has done.

    Two things.

    1. No you can't win like that. Eli Manning was responsible for 3+ turnovers in 5 games of 2013 and the Giants lost all five games. The team went 7-9 and missed the playoffs. These sorts of games were probably the biggest reason for the Giants' disappointing season. And the other two QBs you mentioned didn't fare much better when they were personally responsible for 3+ turnovers in a game. Overall the four guys mentioned (including Tannehill) were 2-12 in games where the QB was responsible for 3+ turnovers in 2013.

    2. The guys you mentioned have never demonstrated consistency in having these types of "when it rains, it pours" games. Drew Brees has quite literally had only 1 out of 16 of his games be this type of game in each of the past three seasons. Every year he just has one. Joe Flacco may have had 4 in 2013 but he had 0 in 2012 and 0 in 2011. Eli Manning had 5 in 2013 but in 2012 it was 2 of 16 and in 2011 it was another 2 of 16. That's probably the closest to Tannehill's demonstrated tendency, which was 4 of 16 in 2013 and 3 of 15 in 2012, and then going back to his college days was 4 of 19 back at Texas A&M.

I think it's a legit concern for Ryan Tannehill and practices like today are not inclined to make me think it's just a statistical abberation.

If I'm not mistaken they used Shelley Smith at 2nd string LG during the scrimmage and then used him there again in today's practice.

Something could be brewing on that front. Perhaps Daryn Colledge is not as locked-in as the starting LG as he initially appeared.

As I said back when Shelley Smith was a free agent, before Miami showed any interest in him, he would be a very intriguing low-money roll of the dice as a LEFT guard where some of his weaknesses could be better protected.

The problem is that gives Miami few options at right guard. I don't really dig moving Billy Turner to that side, as things are already going to be hard enough on the rookie moving from FCS ball to NFL ball, tackle to guard, without also getting him to move from left side to right side. I have no real hopes set on Dallas Thomas. Perhaps Nate Garner can play RG.

Tannehill has been having a good consistent camp so far and had a good showing in the scrimmage without his top 3 weapons. Today, again without his top 3 weapons, he happened to throw 3 interceptions in a day where the defense was particularly inspired... I think we should hold off this premature judgement that he's still wildly inconsistent until the regular season starts, just my opinion.

They appear to win like that, but really don't because when they have won when It mattered most, they've played pretty clean.

Basically the best-case scenario for me with this offensive line involves Shelley Smith stepping up and taking the left guard job, Mike Pouncey returning from injury, Branden Albert staying healthy, and JaWuan James being a rookie revelation. At that point you could probably have a mediocre or even sub-mediocre player at right guard and still have an above-average offensive line. But the chances of this panning out this way seem a little slim.

I was surprised to hear they were in pads today as well. Maybe the thinking was that for most starters it was a light day? IMO there's always an intensity pick-up going from practice to any more game-like situation and that it makes more sense to ease into those intensity upticks.

They probably wanted another padded practice before the game and thought anything later than today would be too close to Friday.

What about my post leads you to believe that the speculation about this tendency in Ryan Tannehill is based on one practice in 2014?

Both yours and Paul's logic seems very sound but this could be an area where we perhaps give them the benefit of the doubt. The Dolphins are using some very sophisticated equipment and analysis in order to come up with these practice schedules and decide when they should have what kind of practice, etc.

I'm looking forward to Friday. I want to see for myself what these guys are bringing to the table.

Is Jarvis Landry really as good as he's purported? We'll catch glimpses of the answer to that on Friday. Same with guys like Terrence Fede, Chris McCain, Jamar Taylor, etc. We'll catch our first glimpse of the potential for some of these offensive linemen as well.

I'm anticipating getting a live-bullets view of Orleans Darkwa because I think tackle-breaking is a strong suit for him and you won't REALLY see that until you get into a live game situation. You also can't get a real view of the impact a linebacker could make until you get into a full speed, live game situation. So on that basis, I'm really looking forward to seeing Jordan Tripp suit up.

I think it's going to be fun.

I know it's not based on one practice but you did state that "practices like today are not inclined to make you think it's just a statistical abberation". I think a practice like today shouldn't support your speculation given the situation and recent consistent play. All I'm saying is we should give Ryan the benefit of the doubt since he has been playing consistently and was without his top playmakers.. but if he indeed starts having these wild days in practice and eventually in games, then I would agree with you.

From the reports it appears that Tannehill has had a very consistent camp especially after the first few days when the offense was first being installed. A timing offense can look really bad when the timing is off and most will blame the QB even when it isn't his fault. No idea if today was Tannehill's fault or not, but I would guess that with so many starting receivers out and the changes at C that the timing could be really off today.

IMO the past bad game days were largely a function of the offense. Too often the offense under Sherman just seemed to rely on Tannehill making a perfect throw into a defense that knew exactly what the offense was doing. When you do that too often you're going to have days where the bounces just go against you. I don't recall too many days where I felt that Tannehill was just off that day.

We're 10 days into training camp.

If Ryan Tannehill had by your own admission a few bumpy days at the start, settled in, then had a bad day on Day 10, how are we supposed to read that as being "consistent"?

If we're talking about a rough day at the office 3 out of 10 practice days, that's not "consistent".

Tannehill's streakiness both in college and as a pro has gone in both directions. I believe he set a franchise record for most consecutive pass attempts without an interception. The 7 good practice days don't necessarily show that the 3 bad ones are abberant. Just as his setting a franchise record for most pass attempts without an interception didn't show that more 3+ turnover games were not on the horizon.

I'm hoping for improvement just like everyone else. Everything counts. Everything is part of the equation, including today. I'm not into the whole let's toss out the things we don't like as being unimportant philosophy.

I agree with CK, the "bad days" are worrisome... I think if Tannehill hadn't had 2 poor games to finish last year we could kind of write this off...

Hopefully he does end up with far fewer of these type of days, particularly on game days!

Agreed. I love looking for the flashes from the young guys to see if there are any potential gems. I was one of those that pumped the brakes on Landry. I just saw him as one of those college players that everyone loves that might lack the athleticism to to replicate his game against better athletes. The question arose for me b/c he seemed to do his damage against college LBs rather than college CBs, (who tend to be better athletes). There are always unmeasurable things like instincts and overall body strength that may help a seemingly over-matched player to overcome, but obviously those are the exception rather than the rule.

Darkwa was one of those who flashed talent on his college film that made me curious about his pro potential. RBs and LBs are positions where late drafted or undrafted young guys can come in and contribute unexpectedly. I haven't seen McCain or Fede much or at all so I'm curious about how they'll look.

I'm not expecting great OL play, but I want to see Lazor's play calling protect the OL by keeping the D off balance. There are obviously times when you need them to just do their job, but a good OC can make their job so much easier (or harder).

I'd also like to see Hoskins and Sims play (if healthy). Not a big fan of Egnew or Lynch, but I could see the other guys forming a nice unit with Clay.

I like Taylor. I think he has everything you want in a CB and hope to see it come together for him this year. I'm more hesitant on Davis b/c of his inconsistency. He has talent, but he'll need the right mental make-up to put in the work to round out his game. I see that as one of those things fans can't know. All we can do is look at the results. I'd also want to see Finnegan. I wasn't a fan of the signing, but the camp reports seem to indicate he's doing well. If we get a Patterson level performance (but year long) from him then I think our pass D can be very good this year. Our DL is strong particularly when Jordan returns. If the secondary can be above average then it could be a very good pass defense year.

What you can't do, though, is pretend that Ryan Tannehill is the whole team, that he doesn't have a whole new offense to learn along with his teammates and pretend that he doesn't have 5 new starters along his offensive line. It's obvious the start of training camp won't be perfect, but he has excedeed my expectations.

He had a few "bumpy" days at the start but, going by most of what I read, they weren't bad.
So he has had, out of 10 practice days, about 1 or 2 below average days, 3 average days, 3 good days, 1 great day and 1 bad day (these last two without his top playmakers), I wouldn't call that inconsistent... everyone that has seen Tannehill play has said he is improving... guess we'll have to see how he plays when the regular season starts so we can put an end to the mystery.
