    Don't underestimate Will Davis. Led the NCAA in PBU's per game in 2012, best 3-cone drill and top 3 in 20-yard shuttle in his combine class. I'm really rooting for him.

    Confidence is not nearly broken down enough and it's pure impact on player performance, success at this level usually comes thru incremental steps, all related to confidence..

    Last year he could do it in practice, but when games started, he then had to deal with the pressure, a pressure that can only come thru the experience itself, which can in return effect your confidence, this year he knows how to deal with the pressure, the performance should improve..

    He has above average coverage skills, he's a smart kid, he should now be more confident in what he doing, now his skillset should flash a lot more..

    Nate Garner won't be cut for salary. Guy can play all 5 positions and coaches ABSOLUTELY love that. Gives them huge flexibility in case of injury situations and prevents having to shuffle your starters to fit in a backup.

    @chrisperk 1m Finnegan another INT...wow...think that's five in last five practices for him, something like that.

    @JamesWalkerNFL 1m
    Cortland Finnegan is on a roll. He gets his second pick of the day. This time he takes QB Matt Moore's throw to the house in passing drills.

    @JamesWalkerNFL 44s
    INT total so far: #Dolphins CB Cortland Finnegan (two), CB Brent Grimes (one).

    We'd be in a great spot if Finnegan returns to his old self.

    T'hill throwing nice downfield passes today...ball has purpose and touch.

    Really all you need to hear today to know things are going well.

    Also interesting. CK I think you called it earlier that this might start happening at LG:

    @chrisperk 15m
    LG is Shelley Smith...LT Albert, C Satele, RG Thomas, RT James. For now. Always qualifier w/this OL.

    At the very least, Daryn Colledge and Samson Satele, if they're not starters week one...or only a temporary starter in Satele's case (probably), they're solid depth. Those two plus Turner, and probably one of the two between Brenner and Garner is not bad at all once Pouncey is back. Not sure how good the line would be as a whole.

    None of this is concerning. I saw someone say on twitter, 20 years ago if Marino threw a bunch of int's at practice no one knew about it. Its practice. Time to take risks. See what works. Work on timing with WRs. etc.

    Are Wallace, Clay and Hartline still all out? If so I wonder if that's a problem? It is a timing based offense, maybe he's throwing where the WR should be but the young guys aren't getting there.

    I think that flexibility is more academic than it is practical when the guy doesn't appear to be the primary back-up at any position. He appears to be firmly behind Jason Fox at Tackle, behind whichever of Shelley Smith/Dallas Thomas isn't starting on a given day, and Satele at Center.

    He's played like a solid starter at times, but I'd also argue that he's got a tendency to have some catastrophically bad games as well which aren't desirable from a backup.

    Tannehill struggling 2 days in a row. Not uncommon.
    However, it's not helping assuage any fan's concerns of his inconsistency.

    Uhg. Concerned about #17 because of tweets of a practice you aren't seeing. If he throws safe hook routes and check downs all day, would that actually be better? He wouldn't be progressing at all nor learning anything, but he'd be consistent!

    I hope you come back after 2 strong practices and tell us how you're excited and optimistic.

    We can't use one or two practices, with multiple weapons hurt, in a new offense, in the first week of August and read too deep into it, one way or another. Good or bad.

    I think it's fair for a fan to be confident in Tannehill. I think it's fair for a fan to not be confident in Tannehill. The truth is, he hasn't done enough to make a fan feel great, and he has done some good things to make you feel good about his progression.

    For me, I'm in the middle. I'm not ready to say he's a franchise guy, or a guy we should keep for 10 years. However, he isn't Chad Henne.

    The defense sounds like it's super good though. Louis Delmas has had a pretty quiet training camp which is good. He's healthy. If Finnegan can get back to his 2011 days, this could be a nasty defense. Add in the fact, Dion Jordan has looked solid.

    No, concerned because of the way he finished last season and the gap between where we need him to be and where he actually is.

    Mildly concerning since it is just practice, and we're getting info secondhand. But they're saying poor throws are leading to the picks, not aggressive mistakes or anything, so that makes it slightly more concerning to me.

    I iterated that I was impressed with him coming out of the scrimmage, which also was in the first week of August with multiple weapons hurt, and in a new offense. It just seems like par for the course that Tannehill looks really good, then can/will have a bad day or two right after. We've seen it in the regular season his first two years.

    I really do like Tannehill and *I think* he can be "the guy", and for my money he's better than Andy Dalton as was the hot topic yesterday, but consistency is his Achilles Heel at this point.

    What looks like a "bad throw" can also be miscommunication/mistiming on new plays they're finishing up installing. In the scrimmage they probably went with the plays they were used to/have practiced enough and Tannehill had, by most accounts, his best practice of the year. I am guilty of reading all the practice tweets, but it is definitely too much at times.

    I mean I agree, hes not proven to be this world beater. However, I gotta take these reporters word as a grain of salt. Everyones rushing to tweet info first, without any explanation if a receiver fell, ran a wrong route, defender made a great play (ya they're paid millions to play defense too), pressure in his face, coaches dictated the throw to see how a WR would come back to the ball etc.

    There are sooooo many intangibles working here. This could've been 7 on 7.....right half of the field, and the defense has all of the advantage because they know the balls going to one 1/2 of the field, and its a pass. Who knows! The reporters suck at giving any extra info. Its tweets of real quick "Finnegan pick on Tannehill".....with no context at all.

    Yea, 7 on 7 picks are less of an issue to me than 11 on 11. You don't like to see picks in either grouping, but you kind of know what to expect (as a defense) in 7 on 7.

    Exactly. And I've noticed them giving Tannehill end of practice stats of TD or INT on one on one passing drills. You can't include either of those. That's so lame haha.

    Wish they would provide the details on who Tannehill is throwing to. All they report is INT to blah DB. Want to know what they are working on. We know Lazor is continuing to push for faster, riskier plays where it's as important for the receiver to make a play as it is for the QB to make a quality throw.

    Also this... won't miss Daniel Thomas at all. Good opportunity for other guys.

  35. vt_dolfan

    Exactly....this offense is a timing offense where Tannehill throws to spots where receivers are supposed to be. This has to be practiced over and over and mistakes are gonna happen. There is no way to know really what was being practiced....if it was a bad throw..bad route...etc. Im sure some have been bad throws....but its practice...its more for 17 to get the offense down...get used to throwing to areas rather then just to an open reciever...etc

    That gives me some hope.

    Honestly I know that Daryn Colledge has played his entire career at left guard and maybe that would make him being a right guard the biggest of follies, however the dude IS a veteran with a sh-t ton of skins on the wall...whereas guys like Billy Turner and Dallas Thomas are complete newbs. Thomas spent his whole Tennessee career on the left side and Turner spent his whole FCS career at left tackle. Why do we ask them to move to right guard out of necessity, instead of the dude with all the experience who is experienced enough to handle odd situations?

    They key in all this is as I said a long time ago, Shelley Smith's strength-weakness specific profile makes him best suited at left guard. The generalized strength-weakness profile (strong run blocker, weak pass protector) makes you think right guard, but when you get into the specifics I believe you see that he's actually side-dominant. I think he needs to be on one side versus the other in order to play well. That sucks and you prefer more versatile players but that doesn't mean you can't make good use of him. You're getting what you paid for, and you didn't pay that much.

    My best hope for this line involves Shelley Smith playing at left guard and it working like I think it could. Also involves a speedy recovery for Pouncey of course, and JaWuan James being a strong rookie right tackle a la Mitchell Schwartz from a few years back with Cleveland. I don't know if there's ever going to be an ideal answer out of right guard in 2014 unless the light bulb comes on for Billy Turner which seems far-fetched.

    As for Tannehill continuing his streakiness, color me unsurprised. So much of his criticism is not well-founded, but streakiness and stretches of poor decision-making and execution are criticisms that are very well-founded.
