I think that play and other screens failed due to proper blocking from some of the receivers. That's a weakness on offense, WR and RB blocking.

As for the LB issue, we really need Tripp, Wheeler, Francis and Ellerbe to make tackles on the first contact. I will accept average coverage skills to just doing their jobs with gap assignment and tackling.

That's emblematic of lack of cohesion at the top, understanding what you're doing and being n the same page throughout.

They have a weakish quick run-blocking line, they knew they were going to run scat and to outside, and they did not get the best back for that.
They will run quick offense, but they drafted 2 tackles.
They drafted 2 tackles and not a RG, then they move Turner who is a lifetime tackle and has body for it, to RG.
They will run screens but did not get Cooks who is super quick or Benjamin who is a beast on the boundary to block.

Things constantly don't make sense with the Dolphins, and you just hope by some miracle it will somehow all work out.

Francis is a DT, not an LB.

Tripp is gonna be one of our linebackers, there was three or four reps where he does things that none of our backers can do..I really like the kid for a fifth round pick..I'd put him in there and just let him swim, don't care about mistakes,

I don't know about most if the game but I would just sit Dion Jordan's ***, he's playing like a girl, and Coyle better not pigeon hole this player, to engage what he is he has to play a freestyle type game..he has to be able to move n.s.e.w..sending this guy off the edge with no plan in his head is pissin me off and not using 90. % of what he does do well.

Sorry, meant Jelani Jenkins and got the J confused with AJ. Jenkins provides good depth, but we don't have a leader on the LB corp. I guess after Thomas and Porter, I'm used to someone providing that type of leadership out of that group. Then Dansby came and I thought he was disappointing because he took the wrong angles and made very few plays. That's probably why the Cards don't keep him.

I don't know what was up with Dion, man. He better get his sh-t together next week, that's all I'll say.

Considering that Dion Jordan pressured the QB and even got a deflection off of him, I hope he plays like a girl all season.

For those that are a little ho hum about our first drive.

That was the first time since 1988 that the Phind have opened a preseason with a TD on their first drive.

    1988. 26 Fn years...

I haven't watched the game, just a piece of the 2nd half, but what I did see was weak sauce, against third teamers.

He didn't do much while he played a big chunk of the game and most of it against second-stringers he should be having his way with. He was very disappointing. I would describe his pass-rushing as almost entirely ineffective last night, especially given the reps and the competition. I really hope we aren't stuck in a square-peg-round-hole kind of situation with him. He needs to flash like a TOP 3 PICK.

I think we went something like 6-10 in 1988, just off the top of my head.

It was one and out vs Dallas last year. But don't forget where you are, the more things to complain about the better.

Good point. I have never seen the first string offense look that good in a preseason game and mostly what I read is, "Atlanta didn't look at film." Which, of course they didn't. No teams do. "Atlanta didn't know what Miami was going to do." So what? It wasn't like Miami ran plays that were never before seen in the NFL. Maybe that run option screen was a little funky, but it wasn't like Miami was reinventing the wheel. Nothing they showed was as nearly as surprising as the Wildcat. "Atlanta has a terrible pass rush." So did some of the teams Miami faced last year until they faced Miami.

I have been watching preseason games for a while. Heck I used to pay someone to send me tape of preseason games in college, and I have never seen a first preseason game, with a first drive that didn't look like the pre-montage Bad News Bears.

What exactly are people imagining that stat shows? The Dolphins have had top 10 offenses several times since 1988, and if you average their "points scored ranking" since it would be 16th since 1988- Pretty much exactly average.

It's especially dumb given it is a pre-season stat which in itself is going to have more questionable correlation with actual performance.

    Great points.

So what if they didn't study us? We didn't study ATL or prepare any game plans either, we just ran a few plays the coaches wanted to see and they happened to work, which is nice change of pace from what we've seen the past several years. I can understand people not being impressed with one series but when those same people turn around and blast the defense while ignoring those same factors then clearly they've had too much whine to drink.

I really hope he plays better next couple weeks. Otherwise we're sitting here with a ton of questions about fit and role, or whether we ruined him by having him juice up and add that bulk. Right now I mean it's just one game. I just hope the weight gain isn't the main reason for his poor showing last night. That'd be some serious tweener problems, I guess. And it all gets hazier when you see our other LBs falling over themselves. I just hope the conundrum surrounding this top-3 pick gets sorted out real soon.

Guy's effort was questioned last year.

What else can we expect when he is not going to play a real game for 2 1/2 months.....

I think it's pretty relevant to this year and our offense. To go out and score a TD on their first drive, with a new system and a young quarterback that IMO needs some confidence heading into this regular season... that's pretty damn good.

Now, as a fan of this team for longer than 26 years, I've seen some bad preseason games... some bad opening drives. I mean Marino was here for what... 11 of those 26 years? He used to play like absolute doggy poo in the preseason. He was passed it... he didn't need to prove anything in those games. So I'm not surprised that he didn't orchestrate a TD drive on the opening series during that time. But then you stop and think of all the trash quarterbacks we've been thru since 1999... Maybe just maybe it's a sign of good things to come? Maybe the curse is finally lifted? (And the mariner sights his home?) ... :shifty:

It was close to that. We picked like 9th in the 1989 draft and took Sammie Smith. Which really pissed me off. Was never a fan of his. Then we trade a 2 and a 3 to get back into the late 1st and took Louis Oliver, and I reacted as if we'd won the Super Bowl. I was a big Oliver fan coming out of college.

Well we already had Lorenzo Hampton we had just picked in 1986 and I thought with an improved line he'd have been a good enough back for us. Did not know he had a serious knee problem by 1989 though. I wanted us to go OL early and my two favorite OL possibilities in that draft were Steve Wisniewski and Mark Stepnoski. I thought the line needed more of a Polish flavor I guess...

DJ was certainly unimpressive. I said this awhile back. The guy just doesn't seem to have that mean streak and aggression, etc, to play that position in the NFL. Sometimes certain players take more time than others to fully blossom into something good, so, I guess all hope isn't lost, but he certainly needs a GPS or something. Sorry, but he's looking more and more like a bust. Hope I'm wrong.
