I don't see any reason Jordan can't become an efficient pass rusher at defensive end they just need the guy to stop playing like a girl.

I was referring to their rankings for the teams in 2014, a preseason look ahead type deal. I think it's a diff list from the one you're talking about.

Which is depressing because Miami's runningbacks are not good at breaking tackles.

One of Philbins main points from his original presser is when he stressed were going to be an excellent tackling football team..

If Tripp can wrap up better then move him up the depth.

That's...I don't know how to take that.

The Oklahoma drill is not supposed to result in running backs dominating.

And our running backs are not good at breaking tackles.

EDIT: I see Dupree already brought that latter point up.

Oklahoma is more of a blocking drill. One blocker vs one defender w a ball carrier choosing where to run. A tackling drill would be a ball carrier vs a defender one on one.

There are a lot of variations on the Oklahoma drill but the classic Oklahoma drill involves one defensive player and one offensive player (in this case a ball carrier) and a corridor created by bags.

The point is that the ball carrier is mostly there for show, like the QB in a pass pro drill between one OL and one DL. If the ball carrier waltzes by then the blocker won and if not then the defender won. Saying the RB or QB "dominated" misses the point entirely.

From the various reports, there was no blocker, it was 1 v 1 tackling.....

What you're describing is not the Oklahoma drill. At least, not the Oklahoma drill that was originally named the Oklahoma drill by people who ran the Oklahoma drill.

The Oklahoma drill is a corridor of bags, one defensive player, and one ball carrier, the two run up to each other and the play isn't over until the defensive player has tackled the ball carrier or until the ball carrier has gotten outside the corridor.

It's not Defender versus Blocker (with ball carrier behind him), which would actually be 2-on-1. It's Defender versus Ball Carrier (1-on-1).

Some coaches run a variation of that with a blocker in front of the ball carrier which would make it 2-on-1. But that's not the true Oklahoma drill. A buddy of mine had his college playing career ended prematurely in that variation of the drill, which is pretty goddamn unsafe.

Also, the quote specifically mentions it was LBs vs RBs.

There are certainly variations to it but its always a blocker(s) vs a defender(s) w a ball carrier running thru the lane (optional). It's much more of a blocking drill than a tackling drill.

Maybe the Dolphins did do a ball carrier vs defender 1 on 1 drill today but I've never seen that referred to as "Oklahoma". Perhaps our less than astute beat writers saw a drill and called it Oklahoma b/c they thought it'd sound good. Who knows?

I'm sorry about your friend. Football is a pretty unsafe activity in general, I don't think any one drill is especially dangerous though. Most guys relish the contact, it's a big part of why we play football in the first place. It you want safe, play chess.

Yeah, I just read an Omar Kelly article, he also calls it Oklahoma drill, which it isnt. Here's the link http://www.sun-sentinel.com/sports/...ins-linebackers-0812-20140811,0,2303936.story if anyone's interested.

For me, it's one of those ho-hum training camp things that tend to get over hyped. All through OTAs, mini camp, training camp, there's no full contact or real tackling. Then you have preseason game one, and let's be honest, most players want nothing to do w/ preseason. Tackling issues are to be expected.

Hypothetically, if you had receivers not being allowed to catch the football all off-season long, being instructed to just let the ball hit their hands and then fall away you might see a lot of dropped passes when they're suddenly supposed to actually catch the ball.

If it happens in the regular season then that's different. I'm not about to get bent outta shape over guys not wanting to bury their own teammates though.

Last year, forcing and recovering/catching turnovers was reinforced by our coaching staff, and well, it worked.

Here's hoping reinforcing competent tackling this offseason works as well.

Yea....anytime I did an "Oklahoma drill" I was laying on my back as defender, running back was on his back, our helmets were almost touching, the whistle blew, and you stood up and engaged

Seems the result was mainly our linebackers getting juked than getting their hands on them and can't make the tackle. Is that more of an athleticism thing than a broken tackle thing? I don't know if a juke counts as a broken tackle. It seems more work needs to be directed towards taking proper angles, focusing on the proper portion of the body to identify shifty players, and how to break down to be into proper position....hell maybe even OPEN YOUR EYES. Teaching how to properly wrap a guy up doesn't seem like the issue if you can't even get your hands on the guy in the first place. But then again.....you give Lamar Miller, Damien Williams, and maybe Gillillsee 5 yards, I expect them to win with that space. And the TEs were stiff arming our LBs....well the TEs have significant reach advantage over our LBs. TEs on LBs who aren't Dion Jordanish is a mismatch....kinda why everyone uses TEs. A lot of times those guys are gang tackled or tackled in a trailing position. I think it was Dion Sims last year that went head up with a guy and essentially tombstoned him when he squared up. People put safety/LB hybrids on TEs...long rangy players. Our tallest LB is what 6"1' vs 6"5 across the board for TEs? I imagine a stiffarm would be very effective as identified in the article, especially against our nonathletic LBs. But all of this is likely just me making excuses :)

Well if Hickey survives the season hopefully we'll find out how much he was involved w/finding LBs like M.Foster & L.David in TB. Going into this season it was obvious we were stuck with our high priced stiffs, but I always questioned why we didn't draft LBs earlier.

That was what we generally considered "okies" to be as well.

As an aside, I hated that drill. Much preferred the variation where you start on your feet 1 on 1. I always felt the tackler was in danger of getting caught with their head down if they were up against a quicker runner.

Moreno's gonna do everything well. That's his m.o. Very smart and sound when it comes to blocking and knowing his assignments and leaking out at a good moment and running routes. It's all the things Miller is not so good at. Moreno's downside is that he really isn't a very dangerous ballcarrier. He's just okay.

Love to hear this stuff about Tripp.
